Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Surely Wales are safe enough on 4 points?

We have to wait for the final score, and the final score in the other match in the Group. Then the third place team in that group have to be one of the best four out of six. It's all very exciting.

If Wales go out, the player who got sent off might as well go into hiding. The internet will be alive with death threats to him and his family.

    Really?

Not really seeing the rationale with that goalie substitution.

    Here, have 3 minutes.

Impressive strength in depth from Italy there... Wales were lucky Italy already qualified and didn't need a result or we might have seen another 3-0.

Em, was there handbags there between 2 of the Italian subs?

The lad who threw whatever it was first seemed chipper, seemed to just be messing, but the lad who threw it back was not impressed. Some swearwords seemed to be deployed. :pac:

Most likely Russia, Finland, or Denmark for Wales? Doable if that is the case.

    "brave"

They were pounded for 90 minutes. Blessed to come away with a 1-0 loss. Hopefully they get a good spanking in the last 16.

That'll be a tasty playoff... whatever teams get through will fancy their chances, as will Wales. Am hoping Denmark make it through from that bunch.

Commentator said yesterday their draw against France was their greatest result. Does he know how good they were in the 50s and 60s?

ah jaysis, what idiot of a commentator said that? Hungary were in the 1954 World Cup final and they might have won it too if the players hadnt been kept awake all night by a massve party right outside their hotel rooms. Some Hungarians believe the West Germans set them right up, the assistant West German manager was discovered staying in the Hungarians hotel the night before the final while the party was ongoing into the wee hours outside.

Expecting commentators to know stuff, or have vocal range suitable for commentary, is like so 20th century.
You know, any actual ability for a position.

This is why we should have 16 teams in the main competition and the best of the rest in a knockout shield competition to plug the gaps in the TV schedules.
Home advantage goes in order of group performance, as they do in the Superbowl playoffs.

I think Mancini has given every squad member time on the pitch

I think it was a nice gesture to give the 2nd goalie some time on the pitch

Stories of rival fans keeping players awake all night are very common. Real or made up, who knows.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus team-mates kept awake all night by fireworks set off by Ajax fans ahead of Champions League clash
A group of hardcore home fans gave the Italian visitors a rude awakening ahead of their meeting with Ajax - the same treatment they gave Real Madrid earlier this year

Hungary had trashed the Germans earlier in the competition and were red hot favourites for the final (according to what I’ve read anyway ;)). They had also handed England a 6-3 whooping at Wembley the previous year. Star of the team was the legendary Ferenc Puskas. You’d think the commentator might have heard of him.

They seem to be at pains to point out it's the ferenc puskas arena/stadium......disappointing if the significance of the name is lost on them.

A nice gesture but bringing him on with 3 minutes to go rather than 10 or 15 is kind of like saying I dont really trust my second keeper!

Yeah that World Cup had plenty of goals, the Hungarians beat South Korea 9-0 in their first game before beating West Germany 8-3 in the second game. But the Germans had rested most of their first team in the group stage game because they didnt want to show Hungary their hand, it seemed to have worked too as they later beat Hungary 3-2 in the final. But theres still controversry to this day over the party outside the Hungarian teams hotel the night before the final. The German assistant manager being seen in the hotel suggests he might have been behind the party, at least thats how many older Hungarians see it to this day. The Hungarian players said they barely had a couple of hours sleep the night before playing the final, they were wrecked going into that game.

I wonder how much of Mancini giving each player a go was based on his own experience of never playing in a WC game.

He played in the Euros but never WC.

Anyone know of a good site with a real time best 3rd place finishers table ?

There used to be lots of Excels where you could fill in the results yourself, not too popular in the mobile age....
