I'll do an imaginary 100e bet with you that there will.

Might be. Not as we know it tho. Keep the bet. I'm not a gambling man.

Think everybody agrees it wont be run of as usual. But there will be a championship in one way or another. Im pretty confident of that. Fair play to you not engaging in an imaginary bet. It could lead to you going down a virtual path of destruction.

There will be a championship. The round robin will be done away with in hurling and the provincials are doubtful. Throw the teams in a hat (knockout style).

Thats the positivity we need lad. We will see our great games again in the not too distant future.

There’s always a mad knee jerk panic from people each time restrictions are announced on the day, but really most know they’re coming. We will still see ball this year.

Would the GAA play behind closed doors? I'm not entirely sure but doesn't a lot of money come from gates rather than TV rights?

Yes of course it does. Dont know the percentage but id say 80% at a guess it gate revenue. Maybe play games with max 30% capacity allowed. Maybe the tv money and advertising revenue will be much higher due to more having to watch at home. We'll just have to to wait and see how it pans out. Only another 3 weeks to go before next lockdown/restrictions notice. Yipee.

Time to think outside the box here.

What if we brought back the inter pros and hyped it up massively. Semi finals in September and finals in October?!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,015 ✭✭✭Ray Donovan

Hurling championship is going to be pretty straightforward.

Munster and Leinster Championships to be played off as knock-out competitions with the 2 winners playing in the All Ireland Final meaning the Leinster and Munster Finals are defacto All Ireland Semi-Finals. (Interestingly would that mean that say a Limerick/Cork Munster Final would have to be played in Croke Park(if full crowds are allowed attend) as the 45,000ish that Semple holds wouldn't facilitate that sort of crowd and the GAA could be glad of a 65,000-70,000 gate?)

This will keep the Leinster and Munster Councils sweet which has to be done as I can't see any way the provincial championships will happen in football due to the imbalance in provincial numbers.

65,000 or 70,000 at a match? Not a chance id say.

If NHE cant accommodate a leaving cert to late July, they surely won't allow teams and management teams to train and congregate until then at least. 40-50 people mixing together 3-4 nights a week before that is unrealistic due to the ongoing situation

Teams will need a month of training at least

That would nearly be late August at best before a ball is kicked

Someone has the drawings for Croke Park out as we speak and is working out the max attendance with 2m between everyone.

    Na it's a dead duck

Personally I think it's a great competition but it's done like the Australian rules

Also the novelty of a knock out championship in football is utter nonsense

People getting giddy at Dublin having to go to leitrim as some kind of romance that the championship needs

    Utter nonsense

Yeah because ties involving Dublin are the only ones that will happen.

Open draw knockout would be class for one year. Might help accelerate the death of the provincials too.

Seeded first round then open draw for the subsequent rounds.
First round seeded on the league placings.

    No PROVINCIALS

If need be you could run it off in 5 weeks. Not that you would do that.

But has the bonus of NO PROVINCIALS linking into the Championship.

Thought the same. Why the need for all these committees. Just make a decision and go with it. No need for all the nonsense, people will just be happy if games get played

Now that it's going ahead (in my head at least :D); does anyone think that the players will be less fit than normal?

Could this have an impact on the style of play I wonder. There has been a slight shift in the football towards a less conservative game, could this accelerate that it everyone isn't at 100%?

Given that there will be a lead in time of 3/4 weeks and the players are ticking over with their own individual plans at the moment I think they will be every bit as fit as normal and mad for action. The first throw in for the hurling championship won’t be a place for the faint hearted!!

Exams are scheduled for late July though? Surely if exams can go ahead, games can, even if behind closed doors.

At this stage, I don't think there will be any championship going ahead this year even behind closed doors.

There's no way that restrictions will be eased to such an extent to allow mass gatherings of 50 plus people for non-essential activity by the start of June.

The current restrictions are in place until the 5th of May and at the moment it looks far far likelier that this will be extended as opposed to eased at that date.

Also when the restrictions are first eased, there will likely be a very gradual very slow easing of restrictions and the odds of them being eased to such an extent that matches could take place this year have to be vanishingly small. I would say matches (especially intercounty) would be well down the list in terms of restrictions being eased, probably close to the very bottom of the list [non-essential, risk of injuries and requiring medical staff, travel involved]

The Leaving Cert is currently schedued for late July, depending on how things develop and with July being very much a best case scenario.

Also in terms of how essential/vital the Leaving Cert is in terms of keeping the basic fabric of sociey in place it ranks a fair bit above the championship. The fact that is the Junior Cert has been pretty much binned is far more relevant.

For intercounty games to go ahead, you pretty much have to back at a situation where there are no restrictions whatsoever on travel anywhere in the island. There are intercounty players who have day jobs as doctors, as pharmacists, working in hospitals, working in shops, working as guards, in the army. Do you want to tell these people they aren't allowed play because the work they are doing is too valuable or do you want a situation where these people are forced to weight the risks ? A friend of a friend works in Santry Sport Clinic and normally they deal with mainly sport injuries but they have switched track and are providing some sort of back-up/cover for the HSE at the moment. How smart would it be to have ambulances and medical staff at games when the whole medical sector is under pressure? There has been a fair bit of talk about the possibility of a 2nd/3rd wave of infections come winter time and the possibility of a surge then. Would it not be wiser to try and let medicial staff on the front-lines rest/recuperate/take it some bit easy if things do quieten down some bit so the risk of burn-out is reduced as much as possible.

Overall to me it looks like a risk/reward problem and from what I can see the risk is far too high compared to any potential rewards. I'd almost go as far as to say that the GAA have made a mis-step here [if they announce provisional dates] and should have said there's serious restrictions in place and huge uncertainty about when the restrictions will be lifted, so we're going to wait until we know more before we proceed. I can definitely see the likeliest situation being where they announce provisional plans and then in a few weeks when the restrictions aren't relaxed, announcing those provisional plans are out the window and not being sure whether or not to have another Special Congress or what.

This pretty sums up the response to anyone suggesting we should plough on behind closed doors.

Late July or August is the timeframe and as Boom__Boom said that is based on a 'best case scenario'. Theirs no comparison in the logistics of both events either.

The only way there will be a GAA championship this year would be if the captains of each team played each other in the 2005 PlayStation 2 video game ‘Gaelic Games Football

A game so woefully bad that not even the inclusion of Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh could redeem it

Actually, can somebody arrange this? It could be gas

Theres a new in development for the last number of years by an indie games developers Mojospin Studios titled 'All Star Gaelic Football'. Not sure what the status of the game is

There is a new AFL game out which is similar but think its a much bigger target audiance than GAA. Sadly think we may never see a new GAA video game

Imagine a football manager style GAA management simulator. Now that would be solid stuff
