Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Has the Woodie’s one been shared? Simple. Predictable but I liked it a lot

I think the Woodies ad is my favourite so far

Love the Woodies one, makes me think of my friend's 85 year old mother who lives in Dublin in a house just like that. All her daughters live abroad and she hasn’t seen them since February but she walks in to town every day to do her messages and go to mass, when she could go to mass. Don’t think I’ll send it to my friend as it will set her off!

The dog's trust one is excellent.

So far I've teared up at the McDonald's ad and the Dogs Trust ad. I made it through the Woodies one, but just barely. Really well done.

I'm looking forward to escaping into the magic of Christmas this year so I'm glad that there are companies that had sense to avoid the obvious, and go with a different tone for their ads.

As much as I love the heartwarming Supervalu, Woodies and John Lewis ads and I definitely don't need to be told to enjoy myself at Christmas, the Tesco ad is my favourite so far. Reflects what people have been going through in such a fun way.

Really like them- I think a lot of people have just struggled through this year, and listening to people boasting about how they ran a marathon, took up yoga, lost 3 stone, began cello lessons, started baking, learned French etc. is pretty disheartening.

I think it's just enough to come out the other side of 2020, and it's a good message. :)

Very well put. I think its hugely important to recognise that the vast majority of people didn't excel during the pandemic and did incredibly well by just getting through it with their sanity intact.

    Good post posy.

McDonalds still has the edge for me but it’s close. Could sway after a few more watchings.

After seeing the stills from the set in D8, I was very curious to seeing the ad !
It got me misty eyed, in a good way.

    The comments are gas !
Never mind the three degrees of separation, it seems that everyone has someone involved in some capacity in the ad !

    Thanks !

I much prefer the Irish 'warts and all' version !

I just saw the Coca Cola one there on TV. :)

Has anyone seen the Guinness ad yet? It’s my favourite one and it’s usually one of the later ads to come on. That and the Cornflakes ad really make it feel Christmassy. :)

Vaguely remember someone telling me its December before guinness start their Christmas advert. At least in Ireland anyway... think in the UK it shows up a little earlier.

Say it every year... its the best Christmas advert ever, will never be beaten IMO.

Budweiser, Guinness and Cornflakes are classics but for me nothing comes close to the Sainsbury one from a few years ago about the world war 1 Christmas truce.

Lost me at 'this season'. Is a Christmas ad a Christmas ad if the company don't say or have clear that it's Christmas? There is a good podcast episode on Cant wait for Christmas about the war on Christmas. How is it not applied to other religious celebrations.

It's not other religious at war at Christmas... it's retailers they want to open the holiday up for ALL religions and try to dilute the Christianity aspect of it as much as possible.

I'm all for it being open to everyone as Christianity stole it from the pagans anyway. But I hate the refusing of calling it Christmas.

You're not going to be converted if you call it Christmas....

Agreed, however to be clear I did not stat that it was other religions at war at Christmas. I state that its the companies. So that's binned.

I stated that the 'holiday' wording is not applied to other religions, as in the festive term of 'Ramadan Kareem' in adverts is not being changed by big corporations to "Holidays Kareem".

Something of a similar theme is a huge bug bearer of mine however I don't want open up a can of worms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,479 ✭✭✭✭DvB

Have gone on record here previously at how I dislike the use of 'happy holidays' & suchlike in lieu of Happy/Merry Christmas. I appreciate the attempts to open up christmas celebration to non christian faiths, usually for financial reasons, but given we are a christian country (massively so in fact) I really dislike that we seem to be the ones so willing to change whilst others vehemently defend their right to practice their own beliefs without bending to our traditions/beliefs. Its christmas here, so can we just call it that please? 'Happy holidays' my ar$e & I say that as a atheist!!

Anyway, as TRS30 said, its a can of worms and I don't really want to get dragged into it as no good will come of it IMO.

Sorry Jude, it was poorly phrased at my end I know you didn't mention other religions I was just emphasing your point that companies are trying to sell the Christmas time to all groups and religions and that no one asked for that.

There's no other religious group going mad they're not involved.

No Guinness tend to play their ad from December. And if I remember correctly it one of the few ads I see after Christmas Day. It usually plays right up til New Years.

Not yet. We don’t watch a lot of live TV so odds aren’t great.

Edit: I think DvB said it doesn’t start till early Dec.

Double edit: as per Loughc above.

This year, letters and cards are back, so for me it's nice seeing the ads from the postal services. And the frontline workers recognised !
