Shannon Water for Dublin?

Does it make sense that the state would spend billions piping water from the Shannon to Dublin? Apart from the controversy about costs and fixing the leaks in the system would it not make more sense to make a new urban development area near water and space i.e. Athlone or similar. This would reduce traffic housing shortages etc. etc.

Sounds like a fake bs headline from a sh1t rag like the evening hysterical or their British equivalent Irish daily muck.

The Shannon has excess water. It's relatively clean. Dublin needs water especially when you see how little rain can fall at times which puts strains on the system.

This is future proofing the water supply and that is to be commended. For too many years, "future proofing" never went past the next election.

Which do you think would cost more: building a big pipe, or building 'Dublin-on-the-Shannon'?

Taking everything into account, over the long term, I'd say the new capital would cost less.

Not sure that I agree with you; where would all these new jobs come from?

Using much the same logic, the goverment could cancel the national broadband plan, and tell everyone to move to some town where they do have broadband

Not talking about moving Dublin as it is there but new development. Easier to spread broadband than to move a basic need like water or open space.

Two or three summers ago we had a prolonged period of hot, dry weather. No rain in Dublin for 6+ weeks.

Outside my apartment is a large green area which turned brown - aside from three or four little oasis's next to the irish Water manholes where water was visibly leaking and making the grass green and lush.

I sent pictures into Irish Water but they were too busy doing Bikram yoga because I never got an acknowledgement.

There is zero point in spending money transporting water from the shannon to Dublin, if its going to leak into the ground on the way or when it arrives.

From what I gather 50% of Dublins water is being lost!
The system is unable to cope, little is being done to improve it and will lead to bursts even if Shannon water is pumped there.

'Pump it from the Shannon' just turn the tap and out it comes.

It's not going to be that simple at all, legal cases, heritage issues EU and environmental problems. Even if it came the system won't cope without massive further upgrades.

It's about 45% and includes "unaccounted" usage.

The best in the world runs about 20% lost/ unaccounted water.

But if we don't want to pay for it, we can't expect it to get much better

It will only get worse as Dublin expands and the existing system degrades. expect increasing problems every summer.

This is news again. As I said before it's a daft idea not only because Dublin is not sustainable as it is but 50% of the water is lost into the ground as is. What would happen to the Shannon water?

Better to develop a new capital around Athlone, more space, nearer everywhere and plenty of Shannon water.

That's old news, it's around 30% now.

Meanwhile peoples houses getting flooded in the winter time in the Shannon floodplains.

The plan to pipe it during the winter floods and lake-store it in Peamount to supply Dublin City, South Dublin, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Fingal, Meath, Kildare, north Tipperary, Offaly, Laois, Westmeath, Meath and Wicklow was shunned.

They'd rather be flooded than supply another county. You just couldn't make it up and guess where they go with the begging bowl to clean up their flood mess?

Sea water is unsuitable for drinking as it's salt content is to high. Desalination isn't an option either. I don't have enough time or crayons to explain why.

You're proving the point. Thanks. So in the winter it rains a lot, much more so than in the summer. So if we pump during the flood seasons to Peamount to be stored & dispersed during the summer there will be minimum damage to the river, the environment, the wildlife and the people living on the banks of the river. As you say even the people in flooded houses won't notice a drop.

Geographically it's Ireland.

In political terms the stream that feeds into the Pot crosses the border from Fermanagh into Cavan.

That's why it's classed as an International River Basin District.

The worst of the flooding is from Athlone to Meelick.

Quite a few houses have been abandoned and nobody familiar with the area would construct a new one in the flood zone.

If a local authority refused pp it's hard to understand why ABP would reverse the decision.

JUST TO put some numbers on this, Dublin current max requirement is 7m^3/s based off 600M litres a day. This morning the Shannon at parteen weir was flowing a a rate of 136m^3/s.

Between Sept and March the flow rate didn't drop below 300m^3/s peeked about 600m^3/s in December.

Long and short of it, the requirements of a Dublin even 3 or 4 times thd size at present s stll just a fart in a hurricane compared to what is flowing through the river

Ok so you acceptst the th impact on the west side of the pipe is nearly zero but your argument is now ecconomic, that there are better uses of the funds let me address that next.

Like it or lump it, Dublin is the economic power house of the country for a multitude of geographic, historic, politcal and demographic reasons, no wishful thinking is going to change that. Economics of scale and the gravity effect ensure this.

We saw a figure of €1.65B to build it, let's call it €3B after overruns, Dublin generates€157B of GDP or 42% of national GDP and 60% or €41B of tax revenue for the country (Dublin chamber). So if we remove a limit to growth, ie water availability you would expectthse figure to grow faster than they otherwise would.

Lastly Dublin is not overcooked, it is a small city in global terms, yes it could be better managed and designed but it is not a chaotic hellscape busting at the seems, there is plent of space up and out for Dublin to grow. By removing one of the limiting factors to growth I would expect the ROI would be signifigant, let's assume a modest 2% increased growth which means the pipe pays for itself in less than 4 years from increased tax revenue

Even if all the leaks were fixed, it still wouldn't solve the supply issue going forward. Both plans are needed.

There is no sane argument against the pipeline, it's just small mindedness from a few gombeens who seem to have no idea that the population of Dublin consists of people from all over the country including all along the Shannon.

I could argue that Dublin would have no water issues if everyone from outside Dublin who lives there had to bring their own water from home with them.
