Because it's great up until book six and then you have the soul crushing disappointment of the next six with turgid plotlines and flimsy characters. And yet, by then, it's too late and you can't stop but you wish you'd never started :)

I thought the series picked up again after the whole Aiel kidnap plotline which was a bit pointless. I really like the last 2 books. Pity RJ died :( Hopefully the new writer will finish the saga well.
ANyway, planning on getting the Book of the New Sun. Cant think of the auther atm but Ive heard good things.

Just finished re-reading the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan.

    Very good series of books.

Just finished re-reading the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan.

Age of the Five is a good trilogy as well

Just finished The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.

If you like George RR Martin, I'd be surprised if you don't like Abercrombie, not quite as good as Martin, but has the decided advantage of being complete, so you have a great trilogy and no waiting.

I'm listening to the audio book right now. I don't even need to stop while I'm working :) I don't see myself going any further in the series tbh. It's a bit too immature for me.

Just finished The name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and was gutted to learn that the next book isnt out till April 09, arrrgggghhh, if i'd known that i might not have started because its such a good book that I just want to keep going and going :)

Have Sword in the Storm -David Gemmell and The lies of Locke Lamora lined up next, with Terry Goodkind - Confessor for the weekend,

David Gemmell i know and i've read loads of his books so it should be good but i'm a bit iffy about starting The Lies as i'm not sure what to expect, and i'm only reading Confessor because i've read the rest of the series and at this stage I just want it to end, the first 6 books were excellent and then it was all downhill, preachy, stuck in a rut kind of writing from there,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,920 ✭✭✭AnCapaillMor

Sword in the storms pretty good as is the next rigante book, midnight falcon.

Finally finished the saga of the seven suns, 6 years later, its tough waiting on a book year by year. Love the way anderson builds characters that you really really hate.

I just finished "John Dies at the End" by David Wong.

It's retardedly awesome. Or Awesomely retarded. I loved it.

"The Lies of Locke Lamorra" was one of the best books I've read in the last year, and I read a fair bit. Excellent fantasy and a refreshing change from the norm.

  • Registered Users Posts: 580 ✭✭✭kencleary

Yeah another recommendation here for "The Lies of Locke Lamora". Picked it up on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed it. The sequel to it "Red Seas Under Red Skies" is pretty entertaining too.

seconded, good read, refreshing take on the fantasy genre.

Currently ploughing through Steven Erikson, started early July and now on the Bonehunters.

I'm really enjoying this series, hope the standard can be maintained

Struggling through the 3rd Thomas Covenant book atm, not a fan.

Now reading the Fatal Revenant - Last Book in the last chronicles of Thomas Covenant, very enjoyable, and very heavy.

The Atlantis Blueprint, by Rand Flem-Ath and Colin Wilson - Have only just started, but it seems quite interesting and will most likely keep my mind occupied with thoughts about long lost civilizations for quite some time..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,267 ✭✭✭mcgovern

Finished the 3rd book in Thomas Covenant, as well as Woken Furies by Richard Morgan.
Now re-reading Reality Dysfunction as I can't remember what happened in it and The Neutronium Alchemist is the only un-read book I have left!

Reaper's Gate by Erikson, seriously annoyed I didn't wait til all 10 of them were done before starting the series, as i have no idea how i'm going to remember all that when the final one comes out, another book would be required to give a decent recap of the first 9

The Stormcaller by Tom Lloyd. Its like a mix of moorcock and feist i'd say, very good imo.

I'm reading HP Lovecraft at the mo, simply brilliant, SciFi/Horror at it's best, The Mountains Of Madness and The Call of Cthulu are genius, and they are making the former into a movie at last.
AvP nicked shamelessly from MoM to be honest, Antarctica ruins and all that.

Other than that I'm waiting for the new Pratchett, more from Peter F Hamilton, from John Birmingham, from Iain M Banks, seems very quiet in the SciFi world.

Just getting stuck into The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan. It starts well. Haven't read fantasy with this flavour of black humour in a good long time.

having said that i'm only going to read it because i've read Eragon and Eldest, and i'm not as convinced that they are as good as they should be,

I find Wikipedia a great place for re-caps of this series & others like George RR Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire series (if you haven't read his books, do so now!!).

Reading Conn Iggulden's Lords Of The Bow now, a historical/fantasy account of the rise of Genghis Khan. Read his Conqueror Series too, pretty darn good.

Just finished The System of The World - Neal Stephenson, last part of the Baroque Cycle.

It was brilliant ... thoroughly enjoyed the whole series ... it defies description, and is nothing like his other work(Snow Crash, Diamond Age) ... but now I need recommendations.

*wanders off to read the rest of the thread ... to pick up tips*

The Awakened Mage by Karen Miller (sequel to The Innocent Mage).

Not the best two-parter I've ever read, but I like her main character (Asher) because he's plenty flawed.

Brisingr, have been reading the books since before Paolini sold the rights for the films and this is the third installment. Have not gotten to the end so not sure if this is going to be like the wheel of time and he is going to make as much as he can from it.

    sure hope not.

had never heard of this, am i right in thinking this is a "spin off" of the malazan series from Eriksson  never heard of the like ... any good ?

nearly bought this just now with Toll of the Hounds thinking there had been 2 books out inside a few months

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Ya, its a spin off. I'm re-reading the Malazan books as well. Gardens of the Moon is a fantastic book. Seriously one of the best books i've ever read. And now Deadhouse Gates, which is also fantastic.
