Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Very strange call. Japan players in from the side at most of the rucks

That's every single game as far as I tell

They have lazy runners in the midfield all the time
Their scrim half has come onto the wrong side of scrum twice when the ball not out

He pinged JVDF there when he was being held down

In from the side all the time too

    Gardner is just a shocker

Direct involvement in the scores aside, Carty has been disappointing. He needs to be far more involved and influential. Handed easy possession away too many times.

I'm really impressed with how great we haven't been.

Japanese play slowed multiple times by Irish on the wrong side.

What was Carty thinking? We should have been in resting at half time 5 mins earlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,188 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

This is grim. We look off our feet.

In the second half we'll need to slow the game right down and boss possession. That first 20 was excellent from us, but now we need to keep the ball off them and grind away.

    This game is mad Ted.

    Front rows putting in grubbers.
    Handling has been top notch.
Offloading and back doors all over the place

Japan clearing out every ruck from the side, every damm ruck

We look out on our feet, James Ryan was a passenger for the last 10 mins of that half.

POM is our only sole threat over the ball so far when it goes to ground. Stander/VdF/Healy/Best need to step up their groundhogging… they're more than capable of it

    Ireland looking tired all game.

Japan have really cranked up the pressure in the last 15 minutes, they're playing some really nice rugby. Quite impressed.

Usual crack with our media talking about the South African game.

Beating a home team is always difficult. And one who performed so well 4 years ago.

Wish the commentator on RTE would give over about us not conceding a try. You can lose a match on penalties.

    Japan have been brilliant

World rugby needs to find a way to give them more regular tier one competition.

Once every four years isn't good enough

Not just Japan. Ireland do it as well

Whinging about the ref is terrible, he has been fine.

Poor discipline and poor tactical kicking in last 20 hurting us

Can see them pushing for inclusion in the rugby championship especially given that they already have a club team in super rugby.

Japan are consistently chasing the point of attack.

They have passed the ball twice as much as us with similar possession. 120 to 63.

@ the guys here who know about scrumaging, I thought we would have more of the ascendancy.

Are we being screwed by the ref or are the Japanese holding their own?

Boot Italy out of the 6N and put them in

Be a good shout financially too, given the struggles by the RC.

Nonsense - he has not been fine.

He has been very poor, attempting to take the high ground is cute and all but misapplication of the rules needs to be called out

While Japan have been good they have gotten 6 points from dubious penalties.

Keep calm and take control when they will inevitably tire.

No reason to expect us to have the ascendancy when it comes to the scrums.

The Japanese scrum very low and very tight, which makes it very difficult for taller front rows.

Things have been even enough so far

I would say the instruction is to not go after the ball unless you have a very clear shot. As we’ve seen any slight margin of error is a penalty against you.

Rte player just awful, couldn't get it playing, nothing but buffering. Found a stream on Reddit for itv and that has been perfect 1080p without interruption. This is the only rte service I use, paying the license for nothing.

Japan have been quite impressive so far, would love to see them in the quarters this year as they should have been last time, that came down to points difference didn't it? Or am I mistaken

The turnover scrum was a disgrace. Japan drove sideways as speed and somehow earned a penalty.

Gardener influenced by the crowd and the Japanese propaganda during the week perhaps.

His refereeing of the ruck is really inconsistent. Japanese players all over the place on Irish ball. Ireland getting pinged for being held in the ruck (JVDF).

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

He has been really poor and will get th hook early second half imo.

Actually watching the second try again, it wasn't even a good kick. Kicked it into a crowded area and left it way short. That needs to drop onto the line or in goal. He rescued it with a brilliant tap back.

He has the skills to open Japan up but he's staying out of play lot which is planned I imagine. Centres are at first receiver a lot. For context, 23 passes from the Japanese outhalf in that half and 7 from Carty.

We could lose this if we dont score early in the 2nd half

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,126 ✭✭✭Snow Garden

A few simple fixes will sort this out. Giving away too many silly penalties. Ref wants to let Japan play cos it excites the crowd and he feeds off that. Let Japan make the mistakes in 2nd half.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,186 ✭✭✭munsterlegend

Next score is crucial. I think we have been a bit complacent and made some silly decisions. That kick by Carty for Earls at start is not something you would do against a top nation and Ireland must treat Japan as such on home ground.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,806 ✭✭✭corny

Furlong, Stander and a few others just don't seem interested in winning the collisions. They're allowing the Japanese a couple of yards every time in contact and its putting us under pressure.

Come up hard and force their carriers back. With no platform they'll falter in the backs. If the forwards can't do that because of fatigue....get them off.

Carty has been poor. He put in three cross field kicks that look like something an U-13 lad would do after watching too many O'Gara career highlight reels.

I'd be hopeful that when the benches are emptied we will have better class.

Given the Japanese are getting free reign outside of POM maybe they'd want to think about taking the risk and competing on the deck and slowing or stealing ball

We’re gonna win this but if Japan score next I’ll be slightly worried

    ???

Japan want to play because that's how they play?
The are clearing ruck's like mofos.... And getting it out immediately.

Not much we can do about that.

Japan are the anthetisis of Scotland

He’s created two tries?! I think he’s doing grand. Think we just need to suffocate them for 10-15. Keep it tight. Put them through the meat grinder.

This is a great game. Japan have thrown everything they have at us and still not converted into a try.

Expecting Ireland to keep it even tighter for the next 10 mins until the front row come on.

Yeah it's brainless stuff. One was nearly a try, another was a try and another brought us from our 22 into their 22.

Could he be suffering from a HIA?

I think we’ll steamroll ahead this half!
