Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Shoot em up

This movie is a guilty pleasure, I absolutely love it! It's a (violent) action comedy, of sorts.

The unnamed hero (Clive Owen) has just been in a shootout with villain Hertz (Paul Giamatti) and his men on the roof of the 'Faulk Truck & Tool' building. The hero, using what can only be described as video game physics obliterates most of the gang and escapes.

The shootout in "Heat". I must admit, when I saw Heat first in the cinema I was a little disappointed. The build up was all about DeNiro and Pacino finally meeting on screen. IT was all about that diner scene. While the scene was cool, it was short, and I really didn't pay as much attention as I should have to everything else.

After subsequent viewings I realised what a classic it is. Each of the main characters is brilliantly drawn: DeNiro's relationship with Amy Brenneman seemed genuine and realistic; Pacino's relationship with his estranged family, especially a young Natalie Portman. All the other characters had their own lives: Especially Kilmer and Ashley Judd (which, shockingly, I totally ignored the first time I saw)

So, I won't post the classic Diner scene (Although it could go up) but I will post something from the shootout. Famously (Although maybe not accurately) it's used as a demonstration to military personnel in the US on how to fight an urban battle when surrounded on two sides.

While you could could argue about the central meaning of the film
The Emperor/Chinese State is the "good guy"
, there is no denying how beautiful this film looked. Again, the best Chinese cast in the business at the time, all stunningly choreographed in amazing, vibrant colour, with each colour representing a different version of the same events. The cinematography was simply stunning - if not for the fantastic central performances of the cast, it could almost be described as style over substance.

    I give you "Hero"

    64296_original.jpg

Speaking of debatable movies. Forrest Gump left a real bad taste in my mouth, message-wise. It may be me because I have not met nobody else who was of the same opinion. When I left the cinema I thought it's central message was NOT "You can achieve whatever you reach for. Live the dream" I saw it as: "Do everything people want you to do, be a doormat, and you will succeed. Rebel and you'll get AIDS."

But, again, it looked very beautiful. Especially during his flashbacks

    Starship Troopers

This movie springs to mind even though the acting by the main cast was not good at all, but the supporting cast were absolutely brilliant and their performances really made a difference. Michael Ironside as the veteran lieutenant and Clancy Brown (pictured here) as the drill instructor were great.

Army Recruiter: Have you ever been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor? That's robbery, rape, car theft, that sort of thing.

    John Winger: Convicted? No.

    Russell Ziskey: Never convicted.

Army Recruiter: Now, are either of you homosexuals?

Russell Ziskey: No, we're not homosexual, but we are willing to learn.

Studio Ghibli had previously released a watercolour-effect movie before - Isao Takahata's My Neighbours The Yamadas. That was for TV and never released outside of Japan.
Tale of Princess Kaguya (Also directed by Isao Takahata) was a breath of fresh air for Ghibli: Stunning to look at, with a complex and often disturbing story.

But, as Disney had a movie out that year (The decidedly average "Big Hero Six") it was ignored, along with the beautiful and heardbreaking "Song Of The Sea" and the charming "Boxtrolls".

Oscar voters really need to expand their viewing ("Boss Baby" nominated above "Your Name"? Really?)

Anyway, that's not a poster (Although it was used as one), that's a frame from the movie:

Watched William Friedkin's Sorcerer the other night. It was a major flop in 1977 that derailed his career. Very visually striking and tense with some great performances. Also narratively incoherent, & often confusing. Not the lost classic it's sometimes described as, but certainly worth watching.

Very good film, VERY tense but, as you said, quite disjointed at times. The original, Wages of Fear is even more tense :O

Platoon, Sgt Barnes is trying to get information in a village so he grabs a child and puts a gun to her head. The scene was really intense and sad but the image of Barnes with the kids stays with me when I think of that movie.

I was old enough to see all Star Wars movies in the cinema: Star Wars/Empire in a double bill when Empire came out. I always remember the scene below, even as a kid. The perfect music rising, a young Luke Skywalker looking into the sunset. And what a sunset. (Suns set? Sunsets?) Longing for more than his farm. It still gives me goosebumps. Before Lucas lost the run of himself - Being able to do whatever he wants simply because the technology is there and nobody said "No" (A fate that befell Peter Jackson with The bloated and plasticky Hobbit movies). Before Lucas lost the run of himself he was a decent film-maker (Just a terrible writer of dialogue)....

    Anyway...... Sunsets......

Was lucky enough to be at the Q&A with Makoto Shinkai a couple of years ago in Dublin when "Children Who Chase Lost Voices" came out. His movies are stunningly beautiful (Especially "Voices of a Distant Star" and "5CM Per Second"): Big sky, normal urban and rural Japan, framing. It was very satisfying to see the critical and international box-office success of his latest movie: "Your Name"

    b2a0423bed98d99f1ea38ceda757ffd5.jpg

(Just STOP calling him the "Next Miyazaki" He is NOTHING like him in style. "Children Who chase" would be the closest in style to Ghibli and it still is quite different tonally and style from Ghibli)
