Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Thanks Fooddestroyer for coming back to us.

It might be best to get in touch directly with your local Post Office, they can advise the type of identification they will require to allow you to cash the cheques and/or any restrictions or limits that may apply.

    Many thanks

    Hi All,

We've been getting a few queries on cheques recently so we thought it would be useful to put up some general information about cheques and hopefully this can be some help to all of you.

    Clearance times:

    • Cheques from the same branch that they are lodged can take up to two days.
    • Cheques from another Bank of Ireland branch can take up to three working days.
    • Cheques from any other Banks can take up to five working days.
    • Cheques from outside the Republic of Ireland may take longer.

    [*]

Standard Cheques (Does not have an account payee only on cheque and is not crossed):[/font]
    • If the cheque is made out to one person it can be lodged into a joint account once it is endorsed (Endorsed means that the person who the cheque is made out to signs the back of the cheque and confirm the account number that the cheque is being lodged into).
    • The cheque can be lodged into a third party account once the cheque has been endorsed.
    • The cheque can only be cashed in the branch it was drawn on and you must have photo ID and all criteria must be met (ie cleared funds available, no stops and correctly signed and completed).

    [*]

Crossed cheques (two parallel lines written or printed anywhere on the cheque):

    • All rules would be the same as a Standard Cheque, Apart from it can only be lodged into an account and cannot be cashed in any branch of Bank of Ireland.

    [*]

Account Payee only (This would be said after the payee name on the cheque):

    • A cheque made payable to one person can be lodged in to a joint account once it has been endorsed by the person who the cheque is made payable too.
    • If the cheque is made payable to two people this will need to lodged to a joint account in both people's names.
    • The cheque cannot be lodged into a third party account (even if it is endorsed).
    • The cheque cannot be cashed in any branch.

    [*]

    Bank Drafts:

    • Bank Drafts must be lodged to accounts as if they are crossed cheques.
    • The clearance time for drafts is five working days.

    • If you have a cheque in your married name and your account is in your maiden name, in most cases this can be lodged once the customer brings some Photo ID and their marriage certificate.
    • Social Welfare cheques can only be cashed in the Post Office (with a maximum amount of 1200.00). The sort code on these cheques do relate to O'Connell St but this is purely for processing reasons and these cheques cannot be cashed in this or any branch of Bank of Ireland.

    [*]

If you have any further queries please get in contact with us here.

    Thank you,

    Darren.

    Hi Darren,

I am confused on the 5 days clearance. Tomorrow will be Day 5 for our cheque clearance. We lodged last Thursday at 12pm.  I can not seem to get a straight answer on whether or not the funds will be available for use tomorrow. We are under pressure to close on a house contract and have to transfer funds to another account by Thursday.  Tomorrow is the absolute last day we have before we miss the deadline and incur penalties. We had to use a cheque as the other bank wouldn't transfer into our account directly. Please can you help? On Day 5, are the funds there if the cheque has been approve on Day 4?

    hi.
do you have to be a boi account holder to purchase a bank draft.? i need to deposit cash into my bank but its cashless so can i buy the draft with the cash at any boi branch?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,060 ✭✭✭Bank of Ireland: Alison

    Hi reubenreuben

Thanks for your post this morning.

As the sale of the draft is transacted through a BOI account, yes  to purchase you would need to hold an account with us.

    Hope this helps,

    Many thanks

    Hello,

I recently won some money from the Lottery. They sent me out a cheque, but I can't seem to lodge it at an ATM. The ATM said something about endorsing the cheque. I would appreciate some help with this.

    Thanks,
    Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

We're sorry for the delay in response
    .
This means that you will need to sign the back of the cheque before lodging.

If we can help with anything else just give us a shout.

    Thanks,

    Hi Prospector1989,

Thanks for getting in touch with us here today, nice to hear from you.

Yes this can be lodged using the external lodgement machine once this is being lodged into your own account.

I hope this helps and please feel free to get back in touch with us if we can help with anything else.

Sterling bank draft purchased in Bank or Ireland branch in Monaghan. This was lodged to my bank account in Natwest UK, London.

I've now received a letter from Natwest stating that they're treating it as an 'unpaid cheque'.

The reason is that it was returned to them by the issuer (i.e. Bank of Ireland) due to poor image quality. How can Bank of Ireland return a draft that the bank itself has issued   What's the point of a bank draft in that case....

This is really annoying. Would appreciate a response asap.

    Hi petros1980,

Thanks for getting in touch with us here on Boards.ie.

In this instance, you need to ask your bank to present a clearer image of the draft when resubmitting it to us for payment. Sorry if your own bank wasn't clear about this process.

    Thanks

    Thanks Tara.

So to clarify - the normal process for clearance is for my bank in UK, Natwest, to send an image of the draft to Bank of Ireland in order to release the funds; not the draft itself?

The whole process seems crazy though; shouldn't Bank Of Ireland have gotten in touch with Natwest and requested a clearer image rather than just rejecting it and wasting a lot of time???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,346 ✭✭✭Bank of Ireland: Tara

Thanks for getting back to us petros1980,

This is how cheque presentations work. The bank presenting a cheque or draft for payment are obliged to ensure they submit a clear image to avoid any delays for their customer. If this is a regular payment that you're receiving perhaps an electronic transfer would suit as these are a faster option with no clearance times involved.

    Thanks
    Tara

I found an old cheque book of mine from about 6 years ago. Would this be still valid if I wanted to write a cheque or do they expire? I’m still using the same bank account.

    Hi Missally

Thanks for getting in touch to check here with us.

Yes you can use the cheque book. The actual book will not expire, only if you're writing a cheque it will be valid for a period of 6 months from the date written.

    Hoping the info helps,

    Hi there,

What's the highest amount I can lodge in a single cheque using a lodgement ATM?

    Thanks!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,293 ✭✭✭Bank of Ireland Reps

    Hi There,

Thanks for getting in touch with us here on Boards.

There would be no limit on the amount that can be lodged in to an LATM machine by cheque.

You can certainly make this lodgement at any of our internal or external LATM's. I have attached a link here to our branch locator, this can be used to find the most convenient LATM for you.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks, Aising.

I have a cheque from An post savings scheme that I want to cash. Can you I lodge it to my bank of Ireland account at an atm and lodge? And is there a charge on this service? If so will it be deducted from my bank fees or do I need to have cash in the account to deduct the fee (if there is one). Also how long do cheques from An post take to cash?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 218 ✭✭Bank of Ireland: Kathryne

    Hi Damo,

Thanks for reaching out to us here today, we hope that you're keeping well.

You can certainly lodge your cheque with your card at a lodgement ATM. There is a 25cent transaction fee which is included in your quarterly fees. For information on current account fees and scheduled dates please see the below link.

    https://personalbanking.bankofireland.com/bank/current-accounts/personal-current-account/fees/

Non-BOI cheques will take 5 working days to clear into your account.

    Many thanks,
    Kat

I logged a cheque via cashier in branch on Friday afternoon. It was from an overseas bank. The money has not yet shown in my account. Can you tell me how long it should take? The cashier said it would be in my account within 48 hours.

    Hi Brock Turnpike,

Thanks for reaching out to us here on Boards.

I'm sorry for any miscommunication in the branch. Please be aware that foreign currency cheques can take up to 5-10 weeks to clear, depending on the type of cheque and issuing bank timeframes. Once the funds have been cleared and approved by the foreign bank the funds will become available to you.

    Thanks, Aisling.

Thanks for getting back to me, Aisling. Just to be clear; when you said weeks, that wasn't a typo? It's 5-10 weeks as opposed to 5-10 days??

    Hi There,

Yes exactly, it can take a number of weeks for the foreign cheque to be approved and cleared on an account. This is based on the approval timeframes of the foreign bank.

    Thanks, Aisling.

    Hi,

I have a cheque book from branch X that will be closing.
Branch X is where I had opened my account.

The cheque book thus has all cheques with the name of Branch X on them.

I won't have any issues using the remaining cheques?

What happens with the next cheque book?

Hi Champ, thanks for getting in touch with us here on Boards.ie.

Please be assured that you can certainly use the remaining cheques in your current cheque book as normal.

You account would be moved to the nearest branch and so if you order a cheque book after this date it should have the new branch on these cheques.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks, Eve

    Hi

I have a bank draft from Permanent TSB made out in my Wife's and my name. We both have individual current accounts with BOI but not a joint account. Can we lodge it into one of our own accounts once we are both present at the bank?

    Thanks

Hi thanks for getting in touch with us today.

A bank draft can be endorsed (sign back of cheque) providing it is in personal name and not made out to a business.

If it has 'account payee only' on it, I'm afraid it cannot be endorsed and would need to be lodged to account in joint name.

    Hoping the info helps,

    Many thanks,

    Alison

If it is a domestic bank draft (within ROI) these will not generally expire and can be lodged to an account.

    Hi there.

Bank drafts are available to Bank of Ireland Customers for amounts of €500 -or more (or the foreign currency equivalent of €500).

A Bank Draft requested in branch and intended for a payee based in the Republic of Ireland or the UK can usually be provided there and then.

    Thanks,

Hi, when a transaction occurs on your credit card, does the available funds change prior to the actual transaction appearing online on 365?

Yesterday I had aprox 850 funds available, today card is fully maxxd out (but I was expecting transactions). But there are no additional transactions added?

    Thanks

    Hi

i have a balance of a few thousand in current account and lodged a cheque for 10k last week at a lodgement atm.

The cheque for 10k bounced today (not sure why?) and my card stopped working around the same time. Declining repeatedly and on my online banking saying insufficient funds, but I have a few thousand euros in my account?

When I rang BOI CUstomer services they said I have insufficient funds, but I explained I have a few thousand in that account and if they could review further to see if any security blockers/ fraud or balance issues etc

they then said the cheque balance had also been removed twice from my account balance - making it appear as though 20k had been removed from my account and it may rectify itself at midnight. Problem is, I’m stuck at work unable to pay the carpark fee to leave or order a taxi home etc, with no access to my money until tomorrow.

is this a normal accounting error for a bank to make in 2022? This seems crazy, not only frustrating but very concerning.

Appreciate any more info on this or support
