Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I remember seeing him and hearing his name in September 1997 when I started in CBC in cork and he was involved helping the school. He seemed like a decent guy and him and Greg ahern were running the senior cup team in Christians for the majority of my six years there.

Darren Sweetnam played AIL over the weekend. I imagine he'll get a run out against Zebre.

I wouldnt expect they would all be involved. I reckon we will lose JOD/Farrell from last week.

    Wont see wholesale changes really

I imagine half of those players come in to the side. The best available team will then feature against Scarlets.

JVG stated last week that the squad would be heavily rotated over this three game block with everyone getting some game time, so I'm expecting changes.

One of Parker or Scott will stay, probably Parker given Scott's injuries.

Arnold has gotten so many recent starts he's surely in line for an extension, though Munster are stacked in the backline positions already.

I said it in the 20s thread but you lot have a potential star in Thomas Ahern. He’s an athletic freak who has been my stand out for the Irish 20s this year.

Stunning but he's a very recent convert from back 3 to second row (2 years afaik) rather than being a freak ;)

Did he have a growth spurt? :pac: strange that he’d be left playing back three being that big.

I honestly didn’t know that. He’s taken to it like a duck to water anyway. His work rate matches his athleticism.

I would have loved to have seen the damage a 6’9 full back could have done though.

    https://www.munsterrugby.ie/2019/01/17/video-introducing-the-academy-thomas-ahern/

Interview on Munster site from January 2019. He says he changed "last year" but also early 2017. They talked a lot about it when he scored that wonder try for Ireland v Scotland the first weekend of the under 20s, after a blistering run down the field. I'm sure they said 2018 which would tie in with "last year".

he was a Munster youth in September 17 in second row and was playing in row a while before that. I would have coached aides/reffed his age group in Munster a fair bit and his move to 2nd row wasnt as late as some are making it out to be

He was our best scrum half last season. And for portions of this season.

Any team would be massively benefited by having him, for the influence and knowledge he brings to younger players if nothing else

Wasn't Casey on a development contract last season and playing with u20s? If a player is good enough they will be brought up to senior side. Only 21 in April so till young and has been given his chances this season

They said at the MRSC AGM that Alby gave so much time to helping other players and not just the 9s. They'll have benefited from learning from a former All Black. Munster praised him so highly for all he gave to the club.

Looks like it alright https://twitter.com/petersuntimes/status/1231496119257047040 It's coincidental timing with Pienaar returning to Ravenhill with Cheetahs. Don't think a lot of Ulster fans have forgiven IRFU for that yet.

Social media and myself included was very impressed with ROG's analysis on Virgin media yesterday. What are the chances of the Munster legend making a sensational come back to Thomand park as head coach of the southern province. It will certainly bring the crowds back to Thomand and Musgrave park in Cork that's for sure!! Thoughts?

Would Munster seek a dispensation to have 30 minute half time periods to allow him complete a team talk?

He will almost certainly be back as head coach but not because of his tv work. He seems like a man who has mapped out his career coaching wise and is making the right moves, I’d say though he won’t rush back until he’s ready to do it.

Have to win the next 4 and the remaining home games

Will probably need to pick up at least 1 win from Leinster, Edinburgh and Scarlets away.

Will be tough to get top spot IMO

Will he be back to coach Munster? Yes

Will it be any time soon? No

Why? It's Munster. It's his home team and the only way up from that is the national team for him I imagine. So at his age now he could have another 25 years in coaching so even if he had a great run of say 5/6 years at Munster and maybe 4/8 at national level its far too early for him to take the reins now.

I'd say give it another 5 years and maybe we see him back then but even at that it may be too soon. As another posted said he most likely has an idea mapped out on where he wants to progress his coaching at and where he wants to live even. Hearing him speak lately his kids are fluent french speaking and maybe the medium term is there in France until they are older and starting to make their own way.

He is in no rush and the exposure he is currently getting is all going towards forming a coaching philosophy that will some day see him on a podium as his Munster team raised the Heineken Cup again

With no 6 Nations action this weekend, Chris Farrell and Jack O’Donoghue have been released from the Ireland camp and are training with the squad.

On the injury front, Niall Scannell and Shane Daly have undergone scans following Friday night’s game against Zebre.

Scannell was replaced after 20 minutes due to a leg injury and Daly was withdrawn from the starting XV before kick-off due to hip tightness.

Craig Casey departed in the second half of Friday night’s game due to a hand injury but an x-ray ruled out any fracture and he trained with the squad yesterday.

While rehabbing from his current wrist injury, Joey Carbery attended an ankle specialist last week who advised a further surgery. As Carbery is already undergoing rehabilitation for a wrist injury, it was decided to go ahead with the elective procedure on his ankle.

Continuing to rehab: Jean Kleyn (neck), Rhys Marshall (knee), Joey Carbery (wrist/ankle), Tadhg Beirne (ankle), Brian Scott (foot), Tyler Bleyendaal (neck).

Carbery is luckless. I doubt we'll see him again this season. Scannell and Daly's situation is to be confirmed but the short turnaround might rule them out.

You'd expect a few changes but probably nothing too extreme given the importance of the game. JOD and Farrell will likely start as they are back from camp.

    I'd like to see:

    Loughman, KOB, Ryan, Wycherley, Holland, Botha, JOD, JOS;
Casey, JJH, Sweetnam, Scannell, Farrell, Nash, Haley

Barron, Cronin, Knox, Coombes, Cloete, McCarthy, Healy, Goggin

Injured: Scannell (tbc), Marshall, Scott, Kleyn, Beirne, Carbery, Bleyendaal, Daly (tbc)
Ireland: Kilcoyne, POM, Stander, Murray, Earls, Conway

    Elective surgery?

So I'm guessing if he was fit then he probably would not have had it done.

A case of that he is out injured anyway so might aswell get another surgery done.

I know it doesn't work like this but I'd be inclined to give Carbery the rest of the season and the summer off and start pre-season with Munster fresh.

JJ has had a very good season and thankfully so given the circumstances

Yeah say rest of season write off for Carbery. Ireland games in Australia included. Might as well rehab and be right for preseason

JJ is the main man now but if he gets injured it would be Ben Healy, Jake Flannery/Jack Crowley? No timeframe on a return for Tyler either

Probably, but it again brings us back to the question as to why a clearly unfit Carbery was brought to Japan and was then, while still not fully fit, played causing further damage to his ankle.

It was really poor judgement from Schmidt and the IRFU medics.

Because Joey thought he could play on it and didn't want to risk missing a World cup. Playing for Ireland in a world cup being by far his highest priority.

It's not and never should be a players call if he's fit enough to play or not. If the medical team have to rely on a player to make that call then they aren't doing their job.

And lack of faith in other players too. But that's a discussion for another thread I guess!
