Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I find lidl are very inconsistent with enforcing the limits for the weekend offers. When they had the oil on offer a few weeks ago I saw four women allowed purchase trolley loads of oil without issue. They took every last bottle that was in the shop.

I'm just home from buying the baby wipes. A woman ahead of me bought the full of a trolley of the water that's on offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,859 ✭✭✭SteM

All this talk of greed is nonsense. If people are using the stuff they purchase then why shouldn't they buy whatever Lidl sell them? Baby wipes don't go out of date and if you have babys then their arse need to be cleaned. Why not buy as many as you can when they're cheap?

I picked up another 6 packs earlier,I have a one year old and a 4 year old in the house so they get used up pretty quickly.

What I hate are people snapping up bargains purely to profit from them,I saw it happen before when a woman filled 2 trolleys with plants from Lidl (she owns a garden centre) and was laughing with her friend about the money she would make selling them on.

We've twin boys which is why I went and got the wipes far from greed

Most people would buy bottled water because tap water in their area is vile.

It's when people are clearly buying in bulk to sell on or for the catering trade that pisses people off. And they're usually ridiculously easy to spot.

I'm specifically talking about the talk earlier where people were talking about bulk buying baby wipes and were being called greedy. That was nonsense.

And the tap water is vile because there's no money to upgrade the treatment plants, and people won't pay Irish Water charges because the tap water is vile, and the water is vile because.........

Anyhoo, what about cheap bananas in Lidl then?

I'm not trying to back seat mod, but perhaps we could keep the thread discussion to the actual offers?

One thing Lidl started on the 01/08 there was a new range of organic food. I prefer to buy organically, so I was shocked when I seen the price they have their olive oil on for. I spend either 6 or 7 quid on the tescos organic version. Lidl are doing it for 3.99 http://www.lidl.ie/en/7009.htm?action=showDetail&id=43224

I will be taking as much as they will let me out the door with at that price.

But hate to see it when local businesses use it to stock up, forever seeing people buying boxes of the likes of lettuce etc etc knowing they own restaurants but I suppose alls fair in love and war

I hadn't realised that businesses do that. But then again I'm not entirely surprised. Through my line of work I've seen the kind of gas bills restaurants get in. How some of them are still open is beyond me. A lot I've seen are either breaking even or deeply in s.hit.

Anyway, whatever of the rights and wrongs of it, I guess they are trying to stay afloat too.

    It's 4 euro.

Plus Lidls just been fined a half million for fraudulent labelling of their oils a month ago and now they have an ORGANIC extra virgin out. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Plus as the crops have been bad this last few years the Italians have started painting the olives in a “only moderately toxic” coating of copper sulphate, a plant fungicide to make the sh1tty olives look nice.

And Olive Oil causes inflamattion in the heart/blood vessels/joints, it's fairly nasty stuff really - aswell just buy stork.

Olive oil is one of the most mislabeled things out there, people often don't know the difference in types as well.

Got the cod yesterday, at least it tasted like cod seeing as we're mentioning mislabeling!

I'm sorry, but at this point I give up! It really is a case of you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Recent WHO reports informed the masses that all cooking oils such as vegetable and sunflower oils and margarines were carcinogenic due to the treatment they get prior to being sold.

This is what I have been buying in Tesco http://m.tesco.ie/mt/www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=259045417

When I buy organically I always look for the Irish and British certification. I think I'll avoid Lidl organic stuff now :(

Pure Olive Oil is good for the old ticker.
You can get counter evidence easily of course. Those Pritikin crowd you linked to are big players in the US diet market, their diets are low fat so they aren't likely to endorse Olive Oil.
I'll take my advice from sources without a commercial interest.

Olive oil is fine, once you don't heat it. Olive oil isn't for cooking.

That's a total myth. Olive oil is superb for cooking and highly recommended by chefs and health experts.

The smoke point for olive oil is about 230 degrees centigrade, high temperature frying is at 180 degrees, domestic frying is lower.

No-one knows how the myth came about, but usually it would be a trash newspaper such as daily express with one of their cancer scare stories from sources they never mention.
