Treating paedophiles

According to DSM 5, paedophilia itself is not a disorder it is a paraphilia which means that clinical intervention may be beneficial but not always necessary. Paedophilia becomes Paedophilic Disorder (where clinical intervention in necessary) when these three conditions are met:

A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviours involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children (generally age 13 years or younger).
B. The individual has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.
C. The individual is at least age 16 years and at least 5 years older than the child or children in Criterion A.

Can the utter disregard for whether the other person (child) is consenting or able to consent be put down to an illness? Or is it more likely an inflated sense of self where it doesn't matter what the other person (child) wants, it's all about the paedophile and their wants?

A child cant consent to sexual activity with an adult, or anyone else for that matter

I could talk to a paedophile who didn't want to be a paedophile, but I'd find it very very hard to talk to a redpiller. I'm hoping I'll be able to empathise with absolutely anybody, even people like that, who could never empathise with me or anyone else, some day.

There was a knock on the door. Jack was woken by the Garda in his bedroom. His mother, Jane, returned from her morning walk and found the police in her garden.

“They told me that they had identified our IP address and that someone in our house been downloading child sex abuse material,” says Jane. “I thought they had the wrong home. My daughter told me it was Jack.” Jack is in his early 20s and lives with his parents; his sister is few years younger.

Jack told his father. “It was so hard,” says Jack. “But I also felt like a weight had been lifted, because I had wanted to talk but how could I say what I was doing? I wanted to run, hide and die. If I hadn’t been caught, I’d probably still be doing it today.”

Jack is a sex offender who has engaged in both “contact” and “non-contact” abuse. He was 12 when he first abused physically a younger child. Within a year of this, a trusted adult sexually offended against him.

Feb 25th piece on some of the disturbing material Gardaí are dealing with and also the legal perspective.

Gardaí are seizing increasing amounts of virtual or simulated child pornography, in the form of cartoons, text and computer graphic images.

The material, which does not feature real child victims, is frequently seized alongside child abuse material by gardaí under the Operation Ketch initiative, an intelligence-led operation aimed at proactively targeting those who download and disseminate such material, according to Garda and legal sources.

Investigators have also started to uncover images of minors created using sophisticated computer graphics programmes as well as standard adult pornography which has been “aged down”, meaning it has been altered to make the participants appear to be underage.

The US Justice Department has announced the seizure of one of the world's largest child pornography websites.

The site, which was called 'Welcome to Video', was hosted on the so-called "darknet" and funded by Bitcoin.

A 23-year-old South Korean man has been indicted for operating the website and 337 site users have been arrested and charged in countries around the world, including in Ireland.

Authorities described the website as the largest child sexual exploitation market by volume of content.

Eight terabytes of child sexual exploitation videos have been recovered, one of the largest seizures of its kind.

The images contained more than 250,000 unique videos.

Irish mathematicians have devised a method for effectively dismantling online child abuse networks imagery with limited police resources.

The academics from University of Limerick (UL) teamed up with the Brazilian Federal Police to examine the most efficient way of causing “maximum damage” to online forums sharing child abuse material through the arrest of key members.

The approach involves using the science of network analysis to determine the most active members – or “nodes”– of the group and focusing investigative resources on them. Because so much of the group activity flows through these members, their targeted removal could bring the whole group down.
Online child abuse investigations are notoriously resource intensive, especially when the material is shared on the so-called “dark web” which affords users a large degree of anonymity.

In Ireland, there is a backlog of up to 2½ years in examining devices suspected to contain abuse imagery. It takes an average of nearly five years for a case to progress from arrest to sentencing.
