Another Milan run yesterday. Mostly cloudy and fresh to start with, then over the last few miles there was some warm sunshine. Run was fine, no blisters this Sunday :). Breathing was grand, it always is at this pace, conversational. Forgot to carry jelly-beans with me but tbh didn't notice any difference with or without them. Legs are fine today. Longest run since Cork to Cobh in October.

Week 7 completed (minus mid-week tempo) 34.48 miles. This should have been my first 40+ mile week, but I do think deciding to take a mid week rest was a good call.

Ran a little further than scheduled this morning, coming closer to 5 miles than to 4 miles. Legs felt mostly ok although right calf was a bit stiff and heavy.

Thinking about tomorrow's run. I will do a tempo as planned, 8 miles with miles 3, 4 and 5 run at 7:30 pace. But come the weekend I'll pay close attention to how I feel, in particular during Saturday's 8M PMP. If this feels like a lot more effort than last Friday's really good session over the same distance then I may make Wednesday's run a tempo run every second week rather than every week. So 7:30 tempo one week, then the next week maybe whatever pace feels comfortable between say 8:15 and 8:30.

Funny I felt at my best during the three fast miles of today's tempo run. Mile 2 at 7:55 felt a little bit too much like hard work. Then into the fast miles and I felt really good. Ran on a flat route today. Each tempo mile I ran a little faster than the previous, didn't do this deliberately I just felt pretty strong. Had to slow myself down on the first two miles because the Garmin was showing me closer to 7:00 pace than 7:30 pace. Overall tempo pace 7:21.

Legs have felt grand since the run, no stiffness worth mentioning. Whatever about today's run, it's Saturday's PMP that I'm curious about. Will today's efforts make Saturday's run overly difficult? I'll try keep tomorrow's easy 4 mile on the slow side of 8:35.

    Good running.
If your finding your tempo miles easy, you should probably bring your tempo pace down a bit. Your pace is obviously improving so keep the effort level rather than pace at a consistent level for these sessions.
Tempo miles are supposed to be hard!!

    Days booked off work.
Just have to wait for the Cork City Marathon people to confirm my number.

Thanks man. Today was the first day that I can honestly say that all 3 tempo miles felt 'easy', I actually enjoyed them and wasn't willing them to be over at all. I could probably bring it back to 7:15 pace alright, but my next tempo run I'll be trying for 4Ms at tempo, might see how that feels at 7:30 first.

Had planned on running today's easy 4 on the slow side of 8:35. Wasn't to be. Felt nice and comfy at 8:32 pace. Both legs felt a bit stiff and heavy from yesterday's efforts and it took 3 miles before they loosened up. Feet up tomorrow before before a busy weekend. Need to watch my diet a bit more.

I'd promised myself at the start of the month to cut out chocolate and cakes etc and to get more fruit and fruit juices into me. Neither of this happened. Going to wean myself off the confectionary between now and the end of the month. Then from April it's clean eating and core exercises.

Just weighed myself now and I'm 78kg . That's way too heavy for sure. I can safely shed up to 6kg. Going to do a weekly weigh-in here as an extra motivation.

Flew back from Milan last night with a full week's running overlooked by San Siro in my legs.

I was really curious to see how Saturday's PMP would go. Would my midweek tempo success be paid for on Saturday?

Well the first 4 miles did feel a bit like hard work. My right leg felt like a passenger. It wasn't sore, knee was grand, the leg just was refusing to wake-up and get involved.

It woke up for the second 4 miles and these 4 felt much better and were much more fun. Breathing was good and I finished feeling strong. I started running at 8:26am and by 9am it was already pretty warm, sweated a lot on this one. Not looking forward to Sunday's 17 miler if the weather is going to be like this.

Mercifully overcast and fresh Sunday morning. Fill my bottle of water and distribute jelly beans in my pockets: 8 mile beans in left pocket, 16 mile beans in right pocket. Just realise now as I'm typing that I went out for this run without any breakfast, normally I'd have maybe a banana.

Off I go. Running laps on a long run brings its own narrative. Seven and a half laps of the park. Lap 1 pass an empty football pitch, lap 2 and the lads are arriving for their Sunday morning game, lap 3 the games under way, lap 4 still playing, lap 5 still playing, lap 6 and they're bantering away as they pack up, lap 7 empty football pitch. Makes me feel kind of timeless.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/75798562

My run goes grand, no stiffness at all today which is really unusual, not even on the first lap. Felt composed the whole way round. Had to watch the Garmin cause I was tending to run a little fast at times. Beans on 8 and beans on 16. Not sure if these make that much of a difference, but they're something to look forward to and they taste nice.

Finished feeling I could have gone on for quite a bit longer.

Legs yesterday afternoon and evening definitely felt tired though. And today the same. I'll leave tomorrow's run until the evening so they have a few more hours to recover.

Week 8 completed clocking up 43.42 miles.

Garmin may have died a death last night :(.

The lap/reset button was becoming increasingly unresponsive over the last few weeks and last night it just gave up the ghost I think. Tried again this morning, still dead.

This is not good. I can still use it to pace while running, but I won't be able to save any runs. Guys at Runways said to pop-in and they'd have a look at it. Fingers-crossed they can work some magic.

How did I train for Cork last year without a Garmin? Couldn't reset so had to start with 30+ seconds on the timer. Ok, so the pace showing for mile one is actually working of 30 seconds too much, thought about trying to calculate real pace while running but gave that idea up pretty quickly. Ran the whole session too quickly in 8:25 pace.

Legs felt heavy, both knees felt 'heavy'. Didn't get much sleep last night, didn't get out of work until late and didn't want to run this one.

Got to get Garmin issue sorted in a hurry.

First evening run of the year in Phoenix :)
First 7:0X miles of the year
And an unofficial 4M PB of 28:43 :D

Took Menoscemo's comments to heart about my tempo runs. I ran the 4 planned tempo miles more on effort than on pace and while it was tough it wasn't as tough as I would have expected. I really really enjoyed the session. I ran the tempos on the cycle path that runs around the playing pitches by the Papal cross, that's so much better than running them around the hilly block. I memorized the 4 miles:

    Tempo M1 7:06
    Tempo M2 7:16
    Tempo M3 7:14
    Tempo M4 7:07

    Tempo Average 7:11
    Total 9.89M @ 7:52

Plus I just hooked up the Garmin to my PC and by doing that it automatically saves any unsaved activity. So I've downloaded a weird Frankenstein of a run featuring me fumbling with buttons in the living room, last night's run and tonights run. My unofficial PB is at least documented. Still going to get the Garmin replaced/repaired though.

Ran almost 10 miles tonight as I wanted to get home quickly. Probably will run my easy run on Friday instead of tomorrow. I'm going out tomorrow night and I'm predicting very low will power tomorrow morning.

    Wednesday evening weigh-in 75kgs.

Legs feel better now than they did 24hrs ago. It's like last night's tempo just ran all the tiredness and heaviness out of them. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,143 ✭✭✭outforarun

Extravagant me :o. I'm a Garminolic. Old forerunner is gone back to Garmin for repair/replacement. I couldn't face 2 weeks of pace-guessing so I bought a 'back-up' 110. I reckon at one point I will have to replace my old 110 so I've just anticipated that moment a bit.

Ran too fast tonight, though it felt easy. Almost no stiffness or heaviness. Left knee feels ever so slighty swollen, on a scale of 1 to 10, it's at most 1. Will keep an eye on this. Looking forward to running back in Phoenix this weekend, missed it over the last 4 weeks.

Extra clean-eating started today. So far so good. Oh and March total mileage came in at 159.99 miles. That's 277.01 miles of running in the first two months of marathon program.

Doesn't get much better than tonight for a Munster and Milan fan. Still buzzed from events in Thomond and news from San Siro is all good.

Needed a pick-me-up after today's run. I started out well and felt good for the first 4 miles. Then unexpectedly the legs just lost energy on mile 5. the rest of the run was a struggle and I was willing this one to be over.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/76762820

I could come up with around 10 reasons why I faded today but I think two reasons stand out. Firstly I've run too fast in all sessions this week. The 4 mile tempo on it's own would probably have been ok, but I ran the rest of Wednesday's run too fast and I ran my easy runs too fast. I even started today's run too fast and uphill. Secondly I ran the night before my PMP, I haven't done that before.

A timely reminder then that I still have a lot of work to do between now and June. And a timely reminder that that work has to be done properly. I have to watch my pacing. And also today picked up an annoying injury ... bruised toenail, pretty tender.

I was a little apprehensive about yesterday's run after Saturday's tougher than expected PMP. Set off determined to keep the pace very comfortable and mostly managed to do that. Slight twinge in right glute for first half-mile or so, passes. No unusual stiffness or tiredness today. Mostly cloudy in the morning, even caught some rain.

The next two weeks look tough on paper, with midweek runs of 9 and 10 miles. I'm going to play it by ear how I run the tempo part of these. And LSRs of 19 and 20 miles respectively. All the same I look forward to the LSRs more than I do to my PMPs. Tempted to run Wednesday's 9 miles as an easy run and then compare next Saturday's 9 mile PMP with last Saturday's one.

Oh and got a mail from Runways saying pop in to pick up my replacement Garmin!! Seems I was entitled to an immediate replacement. So they'll just refund the one I bought last week. Happy days :).

Could 'feel' both knees for the first mile of yesterday evening's 4 mile easy run. They weren't sore or aching as such but I was just more aware of their presence. Paced well concentrating on not running too fast.

Spent the entire run thinking about tempos. I've completed half of my 18 week schedule, I've 9 tempos left. But I am worried that I might be overtraining. I really enjoyed the last two tempos I ran. The tempos in themselves are fine but I think they are eventually encroaching on my Saturday PMPs. I've decided that I'll run a tempo every second week rather than every week. Soon I'm heading into the toughest weeks of the schedule, weeks alternating as follows:

    Tue Wed Thu Sat Sun
    05M - 10M - 05M - 10PMP - 20LSR
    05M - 06M - 05M - 06PMP - 12LSR

I think I'm going to run tempos on the 6M Wednesdays and just concentrate on mileage on the 10M Wednesdays.

Today I missed my second session to date. I just had too many things to do at home. I reckon I could skip up to 5 sessions out of the 90 planned sessions, provided they're not key sessions.

Oh and got my marathon number in the post this week :).

Week 10 has not been a good week :(. I couldn't get out to run Wednesday evening (although I was happy with the rest). Then Thursday morning I sleep-in and miss my morning run, I'd plans for Thursday evening so Thursday's easy 4 miles was also missed.

Then today. Warm-up jog over to the Park. Warm this morning.
Set off on a 9 mile PMP. I'm anxious about this run after last weekend's same session, I don't want to fade again. Miles 1 and 2 are uphill and both logged at 7:46. Down Ordnance and I try not to speed up too much, mile 3 is 7:43. Then at the start of mile 4 I feel sharpish twinges in my right glute (at least I think it's my glute). On a scale of sore from 1 to 10, it was probably a 3.5. I drop the pace a little and hope it goes away. After about a mile or so it goes away but not completely and for the rest of the run it's at 0.5 on the sore scale. So mile 4 is 7:58. On a positive note today I don't fade. And the remaining miles aren't a struggle to complete like last week. I manage to hit my target pace spot-on.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/78173339

By the time I've stretched and walked home my glute is pretty sore. Feels like I've tweaked something. For a couple of hours it's sore whenever I reach down. After a couple of hours it improves a fair bit. Right now I can feel it just a little sore. I'm in two minds about tomorrow's 19 miler. If it's improved a little more come the morning I'll probably set out on the run alright but if I feel any further significant twinges I'll pull up. Week 10 has been mostly a write-off already so I don't mind so much if I have to cancel tomorrow's run.

Glute improved overnight. I could still feel it ache if I stretched in a particular direction but I decided to put the gear on and just get out and give it a try. Plus it was so gorgeous out. Left the house at around 8:30 and took the first mile very easy. I could feel the glute protest a bit on mile one but I was expecting that. After 3 or 4 miles though it was more or less fine, if I thought about it I could feel something but if I wasn't thinking about it I wasn't even aware of it. After 6 or 7 miles I was glad I got out and was happy to be salvaging something from this best forgotten about week 10.

My route was my usual lap up Chesterfield down Ordnance, round Military Road and back to Wellington Monument. Did this three times this morning and then home via IMMA. Everytime I'd run up Chesterfield I couldn't help but pick up the pace with the music coming out of the Great Ireland Run PA systems.

Overall the run was grand. Didn't feel unduly tired. Didn't pace very well though with mile times a bit all over the shop, but happy overall with an 8:44 average. Run without any gels or jellies, just a banana before setting off and a 500cl bottle of water (should have brought a litre bottle). This was my longest run since Cork last June. The glute felt better after the run than before the run. Feeling tired and chaffed now but nothing out of the ordinary.

Into my first of three peak training weeks. Went out for this easy 5 miler after work yesterday evening. Nice mild evening. Knees felt a bit 'heavy' and 'dull' for the first mile or so. I think this must be from the weekend's mileage. One positive thing I'm noticing in the last few weeks is that I have far less soreness and stiffness at the start of my runs. Calves feel ok pretty much from the start of every run.

Once again I didn't pace very well, with 37" difference between my fastest and slowest laps.

Ok so decision was made not to run my midweek 10M runs as tempo runs. I've chosen to run them at 8:20 pace: 15" faster per mile than my easy Tuesday and Thursday runs. The objective of these 10 milers is to bank miles against my legs and work up a bit of a sweat while doing so.

Set out after 7:30 this evening. Ran over to the Park while it was still light. Running at 8:20 pace is new for me and, once again, I ran a little too fast.

Note to self, running at 8:0X pace is noticeably easier than running at 7:5X pace. This is encouraging because I run my PMPs at 7:45; that's 15" faster than the 8:00 pace I'm hoping for on Marathon day.

I didn't look too much at my Garmin this evening and just tipped along at what felt like 8:20 pace. Up Chesterfield, two laps around the playing pitches then back home. Felt fine, feel fine.

Haven't worn my knee-support all week. Seems fine without it. Set out on tonight's 5 miler as soon as I got home from work. No stiff calves, the odd muffled comment from my knees, slightly sore right foot, feels like a little bruise. First mile is too fast. Tell myself to slow down, that there are a lot of miles yet to run this week. Pace the remaining 4 miles quite well. Finish feeling grand.

Next run is a biggie, PMP 10M @ 7:45. Bit nervous about this.

    :):):) Unofficial 10M PB of 1:16:44 :):):)

Two weeks ago I struggled from mile 5 to complete a 9M PMP. This morning instead I completed a 10M PMP with atraining PB and felt relatively comfortable doing so. Ran first 5 miles in 38:38 and the second 5 miles 37" quicker in 38:01. The weather helped as well, cool with some light drizzle.

A hugely encouraging run and I needed a run like this. Two weeks ago I was asking myself how am I supposed to run 26M at 8:00 if I struggled to run 9M at 7:45. Today I'm still not convinced I can run 26M at 8:00 but I'm a lot more optimistic. Glute was fine, knees were fine.

Definitely deciding to cut back on my Wednesday tempos was a wise move. Not only does it mean I'm fresher for my PMPs it also makes be more enthusiastic facing into a week's training.

Banana, glass of orange juice and out the door at 8:30. Going to try run these 20 milers at 8:30 in the morning, same time that the marathon starts in June. Decided to leave my knee support off today. Forgot to pick up some jellies. Legs felt ok after yesterday's 10 miler. Felt very comfortable over the 20 miles. Thought for while that I was tiring on mile 18 but then miles 19 and 20 I was fine again. Legs held up well, not to stiff for the rest of the day. Only casualty was a bloody toe which I didn't notice until I was stretching at the end and spotted a red stain on the outside of my runners .

Very pleased with how week 11 went, especially after a best forgotten about week 10. I'm looking forward now to a step back week.

Can't believe I've put over 200 miles onto my 'new' Nimbus already.

    Week 11 Total Miles 51.97.

Back to morning runs for the next two weeks. Little bit of frost on the roof opposite when I was heading out. Nice and handy 5 miles to start this step-back week. A little protest from right knee for maybe 30" over first half mile or so. Calves were fine right from he first step. This pace is feeling easier now and I spend most of the run trying to slow down.

That's some great training recently and definately put's you in great stead for Cork.
You have been very disciplined about pace and that will stand you in good stead, especially the PMP and Tempo runs.

I still think you need to take the easy, recovery runs and to an cerain extent LSR's by feel rather than pace.
Definately on recoveries it wouldn't hurt to go a bit slower, they are not the kind of runs where you need to have a 'goal' pace. the only goal you need on the easy runs is not to go faster than 'x'.

Check out mcmillan and plug in 3:30 for a marathon and it gives you an idea of paces ranges (bear in mind these are ranges, not fixed numbers)

    Thanks Menoscemo.

Yeah I know I risk running my easy runs a bit too fast. I often do run on feel but then sometimes (often enough) that feel is faster than the pace I’ve set as target. I’m tipping along, daydreaming away, all feels grand, feels genuinely easy. Then I glance at the Garmin and I see an 8:17. Slow down. It happens the other way as well, feels easy and I glance at the Garmin and I see an 8:53. I’m happy now though that if I see 8:53 I won’t deliberately speed up, last year I would have. I find that continuing on easy-feel the pace smoothly picks up over the entire run. I allow myself a 1% tolerance on the fast side of my 8:35 target, which means I can run as fast as 8:30 but no faster than 8:30.

If my easy Tuesday and Thursday runs ever stop feeling easy then I will revise this strategy for sure. Right now when I finish a 5M easy, my brow might be a little sweaty, my legs feel good, my breathing is not in the slightest bit laboured, I could easily hold a conversation. Meanwhile I think deciding to run tempos only every second week at this point in my program has been a very wise move.

Fair Enough, at least you are slowing down when you are goign too fast.

I think I really never knew what 'easy' was until I started to properly look at my HR Stats. I realised my 'easy' runs were actually upwards or 80-85% Max HR which is more of a marathon paced HR than a recoery one. It's only when i forced myself to deliberately run at below 75% Max HR that i actually got a feeling of what 'easy' meant. For a while I felt like I was hardly moving, but I soon got used to running 9 min+ miles and found that I actually really enjoyed it. Now my feel for easy runs is completely different to what it used to be.

Anyways, any plans for any races soon? I'll be pacing in Cork, so most likely see you down there.

Nope, no plans for any races before Cork. You're pacing the 4:00 hour runners right? I'll pop over to say hello.
