Late embargo or not in this case, anyone who decides to buy a game before reading reviews - whether they’re released a week beforehand or on the day - deserves the 60 quid hit if the game turns out to be ****e :p

If it was something like the division or destiny , the fear of getting left behind is real, with a single player focused thing like this, there's really no need to be preordering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,922 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I live life on the edge and blindly pre ordered a ps5 from gamestop. Yolo :)

As for embargos they are often used in place of a big marketing drive. Outside of word of mouth this is a really quiet release for a star wars game.

I wouldn't preorder at full price, but the GS offer of €10 plus old game (total cost €30 max) a few months ago was way too tempting. Even if it's pants I can get that back after a few weeks from CEX, probably even make a little profit. My only 'problem' is finding time to play as I just got Death Stranding too

I'm waiting for this but I'm a bit concerned about DS references (yeah, I know) - will it feature the same mechanics as DS? I mean grind/farm one section until the next, one chance to recover dropped loot?

    I hope so :P

It certainly looks like so, such is life :)
So I'll pay full price on Steam so I will be able to refund if needed :D

Multiple good reasons for embargos. Prevents media putting out a review just to be first, with or without playing the game. Prevents reviews of incomplete games.

What's the campaign time on it? If it's similar to Titanfall 2 then you could probably blast through it in the 10 hours and that would affect sales.

This is a single player game, unlike TF2 which is a multiplayer game with a single player campaign. So it has to be (much) more than that.

It doesn't have to be anything :)

It certainly should be mind you, but that's a very different thing.

I'm not at all happy about all this "Dark Souls" references. I fking hate the Dark Souls games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,146 ✭✭✭Cordell

I hate them too. Although I didn't mind the rest with respawn of enemies and revenge quests in Shadow of Mordor, but did not like it either.

I've no interest in star wars but the dark souls comparison has me very intrigued in this. I believe it won't be a patch on it difficulty wise but I'm like l liking the sound of the mechanics.

Well that's more troubling than the review embargo imo. I'd also wonder if that breaks the T&Cs of EA Access, if people were told they'd get trial access to all EA games, though I presume they'd have some get-out clause for that. Have they done it with any other game?

    Oh they're covered!

I don't think anyone is against embargoes, it's late embargoes that people are wary of. Very rarely do late embargoes actually hide a good game. Even Doom 2016 - which had no review copies sent out - was held back because the devs and Bethesda admitted they thought it would flop.

Perhaps in EA's case they are just especially nervous when it comes to the Star Wars IP because of their sordid history with it. They are probably paranoid that the critics will have knives out due to leftover resentment from Battlefront II and won't judge the game fairly...or it really could just be the game is trash. We'll see.

I was fully against embargoes earlier in the thread. I presumed it meant **** game.

Embargos always rile me up the wrong way, im hoping this game is good. My heart cant handle another awful Star Wars game

It's out in New Zealand so the first few streams have shown up. I won't embed this so you have to click out to avoid spoilers but this is the first hours or so but skip to about 20 min mark if you just want to see some combat.

looks ok in fairness. I'm still going to hold off until I see a few reviews though.

84 on PS4, 85 on XBOX, and 90 on PC on metacritic from around 20 reviews. Seems to be a hit.

Eurogamer review less than enthusiastic. Said they were bored for a lot of it and the story is drivel.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

While others seem to be saying the story is pretty good. It's like reviews are subjective or something :P

To be fair, i was probably going to play this regardless of the reviews. It's Star Wars...and while that's not quite as important to me anymore, it's still Star Wars :)

Yeah for me this is one of those "A family member asked me what I want for Xmas and I can't think of anything so I'll just pick this game. F*ck it, it'll do" kind of games. Not hyped in the least about it, but might be a decent enough playthrough. Most reviews are generally positive enough.

It definitely helps that i only need to pay €15 to subscribe to Origin Prime for a month to play (and likely complete) it.

I'd rather that than the blind reviewers on board the hype train which is the majority of publications on Metacritic, the IGNs and Easy Allies of the world.

Kat Bailey at USgamer gave it a 7/10. Wonderful combat but uneven pacing, technical issues, feels a bit rushed and the writing not being great as well seem to be her main points. Good but needed more time in the oven so the combat could shine through the not so good parts.

I've seen footage of the ingame (holo)map once the game opens up a little, it looks utterly horrendous.

Glad that for once a review embargo hadn't meant a brutal game.

I've impulsively bought it. 47 on dodgy key sites. I like metroidvanias and I like star wars. I'm gonna jump in and not gonna read any reviews. The high-ish marks people have quoted here are good enough for me.

I read it, and it was a pretty glowing review up until she had to backtrack through the locations and that seems to be the main issue. I do hate it myself, especially if all the enemies you just killed just reappear. I'd be okay with running back through all the dead bodies, or a new group of enemies being there investigating. But just the same ones again and again is daft.

She did mention the thing I always bang on about with how reviewers play these games and how it gives a different impression than when players will play it.

"I'll admit crunching a Souls-like in less than four days is an unnatural and gruelling experience: I imagine if I'd played Fallen Order over several months, I would have been less frustrated, but probably still bored."

Watched the IGN review and they loved it, said it's about 20 hours, that enemies only respawn if you use the meditation and the story is great with a satisfying payoff

It has an awful hour long intro with dreadful climbing mechanics, but gets going once you are given free reign. If your into metroidvania style exploring, this might be for you.

  • What issues are you having with the climbing. It's a simple system that works more the fine.
    Dreadful it aint

It's slow, cumbersome and not fun at all. Majority of the intro was made up of it.

Enjoyed the intro level. Mix of Uncharted style platforming and a bit of light saber tomfoolery. Promising start

That stupid machine you had to unlock at the start I kept jumping off took me ages to figure it out.

I'm loving the atmosphere, it really feels like.a star wars game.

Oh lovely people of the gaming boards, I await your reviews of this. And maybe someone will keep this in mind while playing to see if it may be worth my time:

    - I don't like Dark Souls and their types
    - I'm not a fan of Star Wars (but Rogue One was good, the only good one)

So reading it so far, seems like it's not for me! But it does look good...

Difference being here is there are actual difficulty selections so if you are not into massive levels of infuriating difficulty then you can scale the difficulty up and down accordingly.
It's way more forgiving in that sense.

However on point 2, it's authentic Star Wars which is great for fans although a bit more of a grim feel to it considering it's timeline. Can't help you there if you don't like Star Wars the franchise.

I think when some people read 'dark souls game', they jump to 'infuriating difficulty' which i don't think a star wars game would ever have as, as posted above. I also have no interest in star wars but a video i watched earlier like like a game I'd really enjoy, definitely gonna pick it up soon.

Played a fair bit of the game. It’s a real puzzle type of game.

I’m on planet zaffa trying to escape after getting what’s required and don’t know where to go!!! Some parts very frustrating,

This is it for me, I never really got into the dark souls type games so that was not a hook for me but you put it so well the authentic star wars feel is what I have fallen in love with.

I love BD1 and also how they have taken some of the plot devices like from the Kotor series
cutting a Jedi off from the force.

Anyone having audio lag issues during cut scenes? Audio is about 5 seconds behind the footage. Have tried a few bits to fix but nothing works so far
