Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How are the UK sharpening stones holding up lads?

Mine are holding up pretty well, I managed to dig a few lines into the 1200 when sharpening a card scraper but everything else is pristine still.

Mods: hope this is ok to post here.
Yours Truly is offloading a nice DeWalt 14.4V drill, trim saw, two batteries, and charger. Note that it's a 110V charger.
The batteries are a bit old, so it's more suited to DIY use as opposed to 'trade use'.

Hi all. First post in here be gentle! I am a complete newbie. I want to set up my own woodworking shop for diy projects and making stuff as a hobby. I am moving house and I want to set this up in a detached garage. I need to buy everything!

What is an ok budget to get the stuff needed?
    Table saw or flip saw?
    Mitre saw
    Band saw
    Disc/belt sander
    Orbital sander
    Chisels/sharpeners
    Dust extraction
    Mortise
    Router
    Lathe
    Circular saw
    Japanese saws v hand saws?
    Planer
All the usual bits like t square, rulers, marking knife, clamps, glue, sandpaper, etc?

I have jigsaw and drill and normal usual diy tools and crap workbench ( I will make the samurai workbench when I am confident down the line)

    Any advice appreciated :-)

Oh and nail gun. I'm sure there is more I have forgotten. Would an air compressor reduce the need of gas canisters for nail guns?

    Mostly cheap rubbish.

You can get all the hand tools you actually need for less than €200, put together a set for my son recently.

It will be a slow start but don't buy any power tools (except maybe a drill) until you have made a few projects with just the hand tools. Then get good quality power tools as your use justifies them.

If you want to throw money at it you'll be doing it twice if you use clarke stuff.

might be worth going on an evening course (which are few and far between, unfortunately); i did one in hartstown in dublin 15, which covered making various types of joints with hand tools. €120, and they're open for registration for the autumn courses now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 208 ✭✭Poloman

Thanks guys. A guy at work told me the Clark stuff is crap so I will avoid. I have enough hand saws/hammers/drillbits etc so I will take your advice and start with hand tools first and then work away from that. As for courses there are some but I work shift so I would prob miss a lot of the course. There is a heap of stuff on youtube like samurai carpenter, wood by wright etc all very helpful indeed. Cheers

Hi everyone. Recent blow in from America here. I am trying to source a ball vise. I am looking for something that is larger than the couple that are available on Axeministers website but because of my unfamiliarity with sourcing tools here across the Atlantic I am hoping to find out where I could get a large, nice, heavy ball vice. I guess the most ideal example I can furnish are the Monster Ball Vices made in the ol' USA.

    http://www.monsterballvise.com/orderinfo.htm

    Thanks!

Haven't seen many of those round here. There's the panavise types of things but they're not really meant for workholding where you'd hit the piece with a hammer, you'd destroy them. There's something like a ball vise here: https://www.workshopheaven.com/narex-clamp-mounted-ball-joint-carver-s-vice.html but I think the closest to what you're looking for is a pattern maker's vise and while they're fantastic, they're not cheap either:

Ah rats, the Dublin Flea was last weekend when I could have gone if I'd known it existed :D Thanks MB, I'll head into it next time to take a peek. I do need to get a #7 or #8 for flattening the benchtop and I'd be paying €17 in postage alone from ebay.
couple of lads selling planes at the dublin flea yesterday - i think i spotted about six bailey planes in total, and probably enough working parts between them for about three or four functional machines.
i picked up a 4 1/2 with one screw missing for €8 - a little surface rust, but in working order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Nice one. I've gone and bought all the planes I need now though :D
    (I refuse to class a record #02 as a "plane I need" :D )

    Hows it going.
I’m making keyrings as ‘wedding favours’. Going to slice a branch and burn a logo onto the slice.
I’m wondering where I might get a custom made branding iron of the logo I want?
    Thanks

-10% this weekend on Quangsheng planes from www.workshopheaven.com

I was too quick to dismiss this gear as chinese copies, likely to be nice looking rubbish.

Got hands on with some Quangsheng, Luban and Juuma planes (all made by QS Tools) and have been rather impressed by all of them.

Anyway, thought I'd mention it in case any of ye are looking for Santa Letter stuff.

I got a Luban 102 from them a good few weeks back and proceeded to debrand it. It's a smashing little plane. Very nicely made and looks perfect after I removed the ugly logo. For €60 plus postage, it's a great alternative to the desirable Lie Nielsen for about half the price.

Looks like great value for money; I've got some LN planes myself so I'd like to check this one out. Would you mind putting up a photo of your "debadged" plane? I presume a Dremel was called into action?

Took those pictures at the time. They're not great, but you can get an idea from them. I buffed the ridged bits at the toe and heel smooth and along the top of the cheeks. Only takes a couple of minutes. All the bright parts have since dulled down nicely. I like it anyway.

I pulled the trigger on the Luban apron plane, it arrived today. It's a very nice plane indeed, good materials, well machined and put together. I have a Veritas equivalent bought in Celtic Tiger times, not fair to compare them (completely different- cast iron body, adjustment yoke mechanism and lateral adjustment) but the Luban would not be out of place in its company. The logo is awful but I'm half afraid to attempt to remove it. I have a small cold chisel (6mm) which I thought might do a quick job on removing most of the material- but it's a gamble! I don't have a 6" buffing wheel, is that what you used?

Good man, I think they're great value really. I've a few Veritas planes myself and while the Luban's not quite up there with them, it really is a fine little tool for a fairly inoffensive price compared to some of the alternatives.

I just used a small carving burr 'ball' in a dremel for the one on the body, in front of the adjuster (not the worst place if you wanted to leave it anyway) and for the one on the lever cap I just used a smooth cut half round file and a dowel with 240-400 grit paper to smooth it out, then some emery paper and finally a bit of Autosol and a scotchbrite pad. Sounds like more effort than it took really. I like tipping away at stuff when I'm working through a series on Netflix or the likes.

The magnifying led lamp might not be necessary but it's dead handy for that sort of thing and for sharpening the really small toothed saws, soldering etc.

I recently went looking for a set of Stanley 750 series socket chisels, the one with all 8 sizes. Found a supplier I thought to share with ye here as I had top service, shipped really quickly too. Ordered on Thursday night, picked up on Friday and delivered by 10am on Monday, from Holland!

Anyway, here's the link to the chisel set (insanely good value, couldn't find anything even close to the price) and while their site isn't great, the stock and prices in general are bang on.

    Its a HM80L, 210 mm
Other than the try square, and the blade. still ten toes and fingers.
Lesson learned , (or relearned) with my new partner, no distractions when I am using power tools, not her fault of course, all mine.
Looking fwd to seeing the lidl planer /thicknesser later this week.
If i wanted to try the 216, how much plus postage
