Nice heavy hail shower just passed through here. Bigger hail than I'm used to seeing. Hope there's plenty of that on the way.:D

Skies are pretty demented looking to my SW now but all it is doing is preventing any sunshine breaking through thus keeping it cool and damp. A definite NE breeze now, so an inflow thing going on at the mo. :)

C'mon c'mon, let's get going! It's not turning out quite as planned in the east anyway, some shortlived cells alright but I thought there'd be more oomph to them! Galway and Clare seem to be doing the best out of all this though, with some red returns just north of Galway city. ;)

Ditto. Mad looking and dark here but shower won't hit me. Looks to be weakening rapidly on its SE flank*..

    * the bit that is heading for me :(

Very heavy shower here in Castlebar around 5pm,however theres not much more on the way by the looks of it.

Shower is just refusing to make it up here. Would go for a drive south but can't be arsed. Ah well, nice to see some half decent convection going on anyways. :)

Shower made it up after :) Heavy hail and rain shower at the mo. Winds have dropped of to calm and shower still looks like it is decaying rapidly. Feeling quite cold.

Yeah, it didn't go quite to plan, it seemed as soon as the temperatures were high enough, they got knocked back down by the very showers they were making! But hey, it's only early April....this was just a taster! And then there's July, with its Spanish plumes. I bet this year we'll get one drag 25°C dewpoints up this way and set off an MCS the width of the country! :D And it'll happen just when I'm away on holidays....

Was just thinking the same thing myself Su, surface heating just didn't get going. I would estimate about 30mins total sunshine here today due building showers.

Having said that we are getting some overshooting tops in that cell over Connemara at the moment, so all may not be lost! There's another cell intensifying just to the east of Galway city, is that where you are DE?

I am NNE of Galway City Su, oddly, the skies are intensifing to my NE rather than SE. I think that shower bubbling up will slip by me as in general the showers look to be weakening, at least from the ground.

Looking very dark and threatening alright now to my SE :D. 7.9mm so far today.

Edit: Slight NNE breeze springing up, minor inflow taking place once again, although blackest part of the shower seems to slipping south.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭Deep Easterly

Some big fat rain drops now, but not many of them. Getting quite eerie looking.

Edit: Dark shaft of rain breaking out just about 1/4 mile to my east. Head this way please!!!

    Dite Edit! Downpour1!!!!!!

Edit Edit Edit: easing up again. Cloudls look mad!

    Edit*4 Major hail burst!

edit*5 Back to steady heavish rain.

Edit* easing up again. shower is very mean looking now to my south and southwest. No thunder to report! :(

Edit*6/ Rain intensifying once againm. Not a breathe of breeze. Chilly as hell outside!

And that little circulation along the trough axis from earlier has made its way up the Irish Sea and radar shows it to be moving more NW now towards the Dublin and Wicklow coasts. Activity is diminishing in the last 30 minutes, so won't amount to much, but could give a nice sunset photo opportunity for someone in a coastal location.

Despite the fastly approaching dusk, the shower is clearly taking on a sinister, almost tornadic look to my east. I would say the Barnaderg area approx is beginning to bear the brunt. Suprisingly clear to my NW and North.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭Deep Easterly

Om my god, some slight rotation taking place right over my head!"!!!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭Deep Easterly

    Downpour once again. telly flicking.

Mamma clouds developing to my W

Edit: still no thunder or lightening. Rain eased to a steady 8mmm/ph

Edit*2. Scud beginning to move rapidly southwards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,279 ✭✭✭Su Campu

WTF, it's all happening down there now! Good man, you pulled it out of the bag right at the end!

Hey, there's always tomorrow! Should see some more action, with the east probably seeing the best of it this time.

Indeed! I'd not be surprised to hear a few reports of thunder tomorrow from the Leinster/Ulster Members in particular.

Still a few light showers passing by here. Temp a dank and unpleasant 3.9c. Flat calm.

    today was most unusual
the sun shining and at the same time huge haisltones pelting down that was at 12 midday, right now look up at sky and see all those beautiful stars, how different

Clouds that spin. Quite common to see clouds rotating violently during strong convective showers, which can lead to funnels forming and a very occasional touch down.

17.6mm was the final Good Friday total here. First interesting weather day of 2010! :D

I am about 10 miles West of Galway. We had the intense cloud, the flow etc but very little precipitation.

got a couple of crap dark pics of shafts I will post them up later :). Still raining quite heavy but worst seem to be over.

I am 4 miles east of Tuam and I can tell you the hailstorm we had yesterday evening was very intense - in fact, it brought down my newly constructed polytunnel . Left over an inch of hail lying. Very isolated incident according to the radar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

Small clap of thunder here in Finglas.
    Heavy rain with some hail.

Very sorry to hear that Mayo :(. I am not surprised at all with all the hail you got considering how crazy the sky looked to the east of the town yesterday evening.

Some fairly hefty cells around here, almost continuous feed of them at the moment. Not even enough of a break in the cloud between them to see what the structures are like

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,279 ✭✭✭Su Campu

Yes the east has done better (or worse!) today, with some real proper Cb incus and spectacular rainshafts. That one that produced thunder in Finglas looked a real beast!

Here are some photos I took from the roof of Trim Castle!

Amount of rain we have had the last 48hrs is getting to november levels when we had major flooding. All the major flooding areas around town are rising. Sheep have already had to be rescued from a field with severe rising water just outside the town. Looking at the radar as well its not going to stop for some time yet tonight!
