At those prices, you might be shuffling into ringside yourself.

Not until lads stop bringing them to stores at that stage For bull's 6 weeks old will be free and 100euro with them if the boats stop

Saw some BB x JEX calves
Would they be good heifers to rare, would they stay small?

Depends on cow, if your talking a 450 kgs mature cow the resulting calf will be small enough when it matures of a 550 kgs mature cow it will be perfect, often cross the jex to bb here and they come into lovely animals

55kg is the minimum here...sent off 3 sets of twins last week, NrxBB, €18 for the 6 of them. He wouldn’t take them until over 55kg, so they were over a month old.
Each set of twins were m/f calves.

Crucified with twins with these last three months.

Have a tidy BB off a ho/fr cow, what's he worth?

If you were to describe a springing heifer down here is tidy twud be a polite way of saying small lol. BB can depend on the day really. Could be 150 to 350 age dependant but dunno in today's market

Was up country on a factory run earlier called into Nenagh mart for grub on way home. A lot of young light fr bulls failing to get a bid. Good hex bull to 290 with most around 240/250 back to 200.

Saw a couple of plainish yearling bulls in the weanling ring and there-a certainly a twist in them friesian bull calves at to days prices.

Sold 8 in Carnaross yesterday- avg 18€ after commission

3 weeks ago one Fresian bull calf was making the same money

Kids had mentioned calves to rear, not something we’ve done in years and thought they looked nice

I was quoted 350 for 4 week old calves, good ebi and good solids. I bought stock off the farmer before.

Over 200 calves at the first night sale at Carnew mart last night
Not exactly poor Friesans from a tenner to 70 euros
    No bid on jex
One lad offering around 20 of them to a few others for free

Hereford cross bulls 120 to 200
One made 290 but it was old and big

It's not as disastrous as lots would want you to believe.
Good calves getting some money, poor ones arent.
We've sold all ours so far, my yard should be bursting with calves according to all the preachers

Base would you mind putting up when sailings are going ahead? Seems to put a floor under FR Bull price. Similar to other poster FR bull calves 3/4 weeks old.

I will see what I can do but I only get called if I have calves to go/collect. Basically keep an eye on the forecast three/four days in advance.

Is there much of a backlog built up with the lack of sailings

Yes, older/stronger calves will be accepted for shipping/command higher prices over their younger counterparts. Basically it's a buyers market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,051 ✭✭✭kevthegaff

Milk is costing 13-15 euro a week for a calf without costing in labour and straw and losses.
I'd prefer take 5 euros at 10 days then 40 at 4 weeks old

Red Hereford bull 6 weeks old 2 farmers got stuck on him and sold for 325.
the normal run for them was from 130 to 200,but as the day went on you would get a nice strong calf for 150.
