Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Much needed, glad to hear, any idea what site?

    The old garage site.

That's been refused twice before so unlikely to happen. Is there such a thing as too many restaurants?

I spotted afterwards that there was an appeal follow planning refusal. I wonder why the planning authorities refused it? I'm struggling to see what a city centre will be all about if it's not bars, coffee shops and restaurants. People seem to be migrating more and more to online for everything thes days so the array of shops that might survive is getting more limited by the day.

It would be great to have more people live and work in the city centre, that needs to be supported with residential development, office space and the social spaces to be created. However I'm sure our crowd are in the dark ages thinking banks and clothes shops are the way forward....dummies.

The website of Ballincollig Shopping Centre, which seems to be in the process of being renamed CastleWest Cork, suggests Starbucks is opening in the Old Coach house in the shopping centre plaza.

    http://castlewestcork.ie/centre-map/

The centre owners have an application with Cork CoCo (166919) to convert the building from retail to coffee shop. Good to see more units in this centre finally becoming occupied.

Yep, good to see some investment along the North channel. It'll mean a year or so of construction noise for me, as I live almost around the corner, but it looks like a good addition to the area.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

It's also showing Dixons next to Hickeys.

I wonder why the rebranding - has the centre new owners?

wonder where that's going? Possibly the old turners cross tavern?

I'd say it's probably going in next to the new Homestore and More. There is a Cafe unit there.

Where exactly near Woodies is the New Homestore going?

It's in a newly built unit behind Blackwater Motors. They are also building another unit for DID Electrical.

There is more information here: http://www.irishexaminer.com/property/doors-opening-in-new-phase-of-cork-retail-warehousing-441743.html

I'm surprised to see Dixons on there, seeing how it closed about 8 years ago...

Bunsen is looking for full-time wait staff for a new Cork city location

    https://ie.indeed.com/cmp/Bunsen/jobs/Front-House-Wait-Staff-debc0dfd3aa884eb

Should give Coqbull and Son of a Bun a run for their money.

I'm guessing it could be going in the restaurant unit currently being refitted next to Coqbull on French Church Street.

Looks like Iceland supermarket are opening a store in Douglas as they are advertising for manager positions. They've opened quite a few stores around the country recently (Tralee, Midleton, Dublin etc)

Iceland can have good offers at times on frozen food and sometimes other grocery items such as breakfast cereals can be great value!

Looks like lots of chains from overseas are opening up. Maybe it's a good sign of our economy. Not sure Iceland would be one of the ones I would be longing to see open here though.

One of the biggest issues with fast food outlets opening is the litter generated in the area. I really believe that all such businesses need to employ somebody to do a clean up every night/morning of the vicinity for any/all litter generated in the surrounding area, by their outlet

I think it might have already been posted here about Starbucks opening in Ballincollig but they've started recruiting for there now. I believe this will be Cork's 9th Starbucks in barely 3 years in the city. That is some expansion!!!

    Mahon Point
    City Gate
    Douglas
    Blackpool
    Albert Quay
    Opera Lane
    Princes St
    Patrick St
    And now Ballincollig!!!

For a change, they actually got the planning permission in advance this time it seems...

A falafel place opening on academy street apparently on the site of another place which didn't last.

Kingsley is planning to increase its number of bedrooms I noticed earlier. It's some ugly building I have to say but think the council just gave up on that area of the city with the design of the stuff they allowed to be built there.

Speaking hotels, does anyone know what is happening with the hotel at the end of the South Mall by the bus stops?

I think it's a fine building. Very handy meeting place for anyone on the western city and county side.
Light meals are good and very reasonable too.

Guess we can agree to disagree :) I see this view most days running in the straight road & think it's ugly as sin!

Bought by the Dalata Hotel Group last year for €10.2m. Not much movement since then.

Maybe already mentioned but signs saying West Cork Burger Company opening soon next to Amigos on Washington St.

Planning permission applied recently to add more bedrooms and reconfigure entrance via South Mall and include retail use on Parnell place.

West Cork now in Washington St, ha. The people in Allihies, over 100 miles away would be amused.

This has been on the cards for a long time. The hotel seems to be doing really well and was missed when it was out of commission. Looks like the buyer got it for a song (I heard €6M) and we, the taxpayers, are probably picking up the NAMA bill.

McDonald's are apply for permission to build a 2 storey drive through in the small car park in Wilton to the left as you enter from the sarsfield road. The only thing is they're using the whole car park so people will have to park in the Tesco car park. With the lidl seemingly going ahead, it's goin to be way busier in Wilton.

The area right next to the road? That's tiny! They'd have to reroute traffic through the existing spaces to accommodate it and loose what are already a limited number of spaces.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,411 ✭✭✭ofcork

Apparently 26 spaces will be lost.

It does very well in Douglas. I could see it being very popular with students in CIT and UCC. I'd say they'd get a good bit of business with CUH as well.

Fair point. We'll have to wait and see. No harm to see more services on that side of city, which has been neglected for far too long. Not thrilled by the prospect of more traffic congestion though.

So both DID electrical and Costa coffee are opening up next to the new Homestore & more on the kindle road, did electrical says this month, while costs are just putting in an application for planning.

Something new opening on Oliver Plunket street where Ice Cream shop used to be. Backing to signage being put on today and wording looked eerily like it could match up with Starbucks. Probably not though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Did not know there had been an Ice Cream Shop on Oliver Plunkett St.
Not to derail the thread, but was it there long and opinions as to why it closed?
Was it a sort of summer pop up?

It was there for around 3 years, Scup Gelato on the corner of cook street.
