Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A petition has been started to get cllrs and City Hall to reevaluate the Half Moon Lane entrance, in the hope of getting them to open it this Summer.. :)

I hadn't a clue who Terry Shannon was but now find myself telling friends who live in his council area to be sure & not vote for the guy! Figure if I tell a few people & they do the same it will hopefully have some impact.

He relies on a very niche set of people to vote for him.. Mainly elderly people who he gets their gardens mowed for etc.

I doubt many others would give him a vote.

Certainly wouldn't touch him with a bargepole after his multiple anti pedestrian and anti cyclist comments. He's against speed reductions, 30km areas too.

Car traffic chaos at Tramore Valley Park today. Kind of sad really.

Lots is attributed to the dump/recycling. They're the only one open in Cork from what they told me. Rafeen is closed. Everyone spring cleaning since there's not much to do, and they have to limit the number of cars/people at a time too.

That all blocks up the road for cars going to the park area. It is busy though, while still allowing for social distancing. (This has been my experience so far)

Apparently this tweet is so wrong that someone in the council decided to work on a Saturday! Its wrong to say the park is inaccessible in this photo because its actually a jam caused by the recycling centre. The fact that park is still inaccessible doesn't bother the council or Terry (who retweeted).....

Terry must still high from the praise he's getting from locals for temporarily not acting as an obstacle to the Marina from being pedestrianised.

Shannon is some bluffer. He repeatedly fought to block this and here he is taking the credit. Do people actually believe his nonsense?

Love the way nearly all the comments under Terry's tweet are calling him out for the bluffer that he is :D

Some neck on him to try and claim credit for it. Does he think the electorate are all dopes or what?

I think most people don't pay any attention. You can see journalists happy to regurgitate the "Reimagine Cork" spin without any really critique. Probably afraid to upset any relationships and lose their inside access.

These small changes they've made will be reversed by Autumn and cllrs and traders will use the post COVID economy as an excuse to halt any additional measures for the coming years.

It should be a bigger story that public transport capacity has been destroyed and the only response from Cork city council is to pedestrianise a few small streets and say people will take their cars instead . How are people supposed to get around when workers, schools and colleges come back when things reopen. Where are people going to get the money for cars and where the hell do we plan on parking them in the city? How bad will congestion be if this is the plan...

It will be interesting to see what happens in a few months. I imagine that people will be reluctant to go back to public transport as you are in such close proximity to people...

A rise in car sales was seen in Wuhan after the lockdown ended, it will be interesting to see what happens in Cork.

It's going to be awful. Large numbers of people don't have access to cars. In the 2016 census a sizeable number of households in the city indicated they had no car. And the response from the City Hall is

One things for sure. Half moon ain't opening.

They are already backtracking on their crap commitments to pedestrians which friendly journalists used to give them headlines last week....

City Hall are known for taking absolutely no input from residents living in the centre - of which there are 1000's without a private vehicle as you rightly say.

Management need to take a long, hard look at what they're proposing.

It's going to be a complete mess.

The infamous culvert in TVP that could not be used to provide access to the Black Ash car park as it's too dangerous.

    515713.jpg

Strangely this path which has a much longer culvert is totally fine however!

Well i wouldnt say its totally fine, i used in regularly a few years back and most of the bulbs had blown and they would not maintain it, its a really long stretch to be in the dark.

I think the other one is far larger in terms of width and head height.

I wonder would we be in a different position with an elected mayor, there seems to be no accountability to the people in City Hall. How are other councils getting things done so fast?

Terry Shannon has offered a personal favour to the principal of Christ King for a key... You couldn't make this stuff up. Meanwhile stating the entrance is dangerous and keeping the general public locked out.

Private access to the park for the select few organised by the shower in City Hall while the general public can like it or lump it. Cronyism is alive and well.

I think it's fair to say that this is the most impressively over-engineered solution to opening a gate that I have ever seen.

It's the most cycle and pedestrian friendly design I've ever seen Cork City Council attempt on a normal road: raised tables, road narrowing, gulley removal, calming chicanes, rumble strips - you name it! I'm not complaining, I just wish they spent a fraction of that effort on their dedicated pedestrian and cycle infrastructure elsewhere!

Needless to say it's next year (as it's always been it seems)!
CONSTRUCTION works on the pedestrian entrance to Tramore Valley Park from Half Moon Lane won’t be under way until the end of the first quarter of 2021 at the earliest.

Long-awaited works on park access won’t start until next year

Was in the park today, first time in months and was pleasantly surprised with how popular and busy it was. I think all those saplings will look great in a few years. Pedestrian access obviously still the big problem and unfinished paths in this weather.

1 thing its sorely missing is a playground, the outdoor gym has become the playground which would actually stop people who would use it from using it.

In the next decade it will mature into a great amenity

Huge potential but it needs enormous investment. Doesn't seem to be anything in the way of plans aside from half moon lane access and the access bridge over the south ring, which is a shame as the park still has a post apocalypse wasteland feel to it.

It'll need 30 - 50 years to bed in as a really nice park (think Stephens Green or one of them). At the moment it still feels like a dump converted to a park but there is potential there. Its a destination though because you can only access it by car/bike. Its not a place you pass through or stop off for a coffee.

Still not sure why they can't extend the path under the road from harvey norman side, that would solve a lot of issues. There is 4 potential access point right now, 1 is open, half moon could be opened and have gards present for a few weeks issuing fines for parking it should only be pedestrian access.

Was going past hartys quay today and a gard was out writing tickets, surely the issue there is lack of parking for one of the few greenways within the city that people flock to. Maybe not as many would be driving to it if they had other options that they could walk to

That access point is part of the master plan. When they get all 4 entrances open, you will get a lot of through traffic. That would give the potential for a coffee shop or two. A kids playground is pretty badly needed. Some of the paths need to be cleaned up as they get very muddy when it rains. A bit of a cleanup would make a huge difference. Aside from that the public basketball/ 5 a side court in douglas community park has been an outrageous success. I don't see why you couldn't add 3 or 4 similar courts in TVP?

plus Douglas park now will have an outdoor gym.

The playground in Douglas is fantastic too, it depresses me when i bring the kids to the Lough to see the ducks and swans and the pathetic playground there compared to Douglas.

The playground at the Lough is pretty grim, although the outdoor gym at the Douglas park has been there for years.

Doherty and Co. will have blood on their hands... Saw on twitter that some kids on bikes were nearly blown away crossing the South Link the other day, trying to get into the park.

I listened into a council meeting regarding the marina. The conversation was on the possibility of asphalting the area outside the rowing club and creating another car park. The cllrs by large are very very concerned about ensuring people can drive to amenities. Like the ability to park gets a huge chunk of time. Same council that attempted to convert Oliver Plunkett St. into a drive through during Lockdown 1, then refused to give it back to pedestrians before doing a survey of how that would impact essential workers parking.... We are a city run by an old aged grumpy suburbanites.

Speaks volumes that you can only turn left leaving the park. Its literally tailored for heading back out to the suburbs via the South Link.

I've accessed this park by bike. Leaving it is..... fun. I'll continue to do it because I'm so bored this lockdown and can't get over the fact that a city park is inaccessible to local city residents.

The health and safety line is utter crap. All you have to do is look at how they are f*cked up the junction on the centre park road to know its an excuse. That turns into a chaotic mess of confusion.
