Something to think about is that you're looking at ads from all over the country. What's the 5/6 hours it'll take you to get to Cavan/Galway/Cork and back + petrol worth to you. Especially if you go and don't like the bike. I'd limit the search geographically myself.

I know, I am only really looking at anything close to home but by searching wide it's giving me an idea of what's out there, pricing etc. I'd travel in Munster realistically unless it was a very good deal that someone would dpd down and that I could have an idea of size by trying the same bike down here.

This one seems good, but I imagine the price should be less. Handlebars filthy! So must have some travelling done.

I'll contact that guy about the Lapierre. Is that frame size good for 5 7? I think it is?

I spoke to this guy, obviously I can't do anything until after 31st with being away. He won't take less than 360, but he has two more 52cm bikes after this one to sell, for some reason.

If I could try one in cork for size I'd be happy to collect it, as I have some friends I am meant to visit in Galway anyway.

A case of wait and see I suppose, but I'd really need to get to try it out for size first.

I like the giant but this size chart would indicate that size small is probably best for your height

OCR & SCR were old models from giant. Not sure, you can probably search it, but I’m guessing they stopped making them 8-10 years ago.
The defy is a bit newer , but looks like an oldish paint job, and sora is a basic group set, probably 8 speed. You might get a 10 speed group set bike from a known brand for similar money if you have patience & keep looking.

It's a 2015 Giant Defy 3 with 9 speed sora, I think it's good for the money if only the frame was correct size.
10 speed Tiagra on a good frame for under €300 is unlikely.

Ask for a receipt before handing over any money, it is more than likely legit but no harm.

Quick question, how do people rate the Cycle Super Store on Airthon Road?

Seems like that have plenty of choice and a second hand section out back.

Going to take a drive out to it tomorrow and possibly get something !

Yeah it is an unusual one I thought as well. Now he's on adverts with a lot of decent reviews as well. As you say prob legit but you can never be too careful.

Any thoughts on the edge cycle shop in cork?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

It's been a few years since I was in there but it probably hasn't changed much.
Large selection of bikes, expensive prices. You probably won't find anything good for under €1k in there.
Might be good if you could get the bike to work scheme.

Thought I was on a winner but looks like m frame

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

    The helmet is medium
    The frame size is?????
He says 20" which is 50.8 cm, very weird trying to give the size in inches when nobody uses that sizing method.
I think I can see an L written on the frame in one pic so that's way bigger than he claims the frame is.
I don't understand why people can't just give the details written on the frame.

20 inch, 50cm, says on Google that is an m frame. Very strange alright

I think he's trying to convert it to some very old system where a 20" frame would be a fairly large size. No idea why as that sizing has not been used for a very long time. Or maybe mountain bike sizing where 20" would be large. Either way he just made the number up.

Specialized are one of the biggest names in cycling (up there with Giant and Trek in brand name recognition). That particular bike is a 2014 model and I personally would see it as overpriced and €300-400 would be a far more realistic price.

That said the Allez is an excellent starter bike and if you could get closer to 350 it would be a good deal.

One of the biggest bike brands, I love specialized the only down side is their bikes are overpriced when new. I think Giant make the aluminium frames for specialized.
My first bike was an Allez that I brought second hand on adverts. It's done thousands of kilometres and survived many harsh winters and from reading back on posts from the previous owner it had already been through a lot by the time I brought it. I think I paid about €520 for it as well, I have it 8 years now and it's the 2008 model.

The CAAD is great also and many on here love them but the price is too high for a 2007 model.

Frame size of 54 might be a touch big for me looking at their size chart it's for 5 6 to 5 9 and I'd be 5 7..

Agreed but if could get 100-150 off even, would imagine there is a chance.. Surely most people price high in the hope of getting more out of it.

The Allez Elite had an RRP of €1,000 back in 2014, like I said they are a bit overpriced when new. There's a good chance it was bought cheaper under the bike to work scheme.
Current supply and demand is what will dictate price now. It seems like the owner knows a bit about bikes so there is a good chance he did maintenance and kept it in good condition.
Well worth taking a look at it anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,355 ✭✭✭Jim Gazebo

So, just while I am idling a bit of time here, is there anything in particular I should look at on a bike if I go to see it?

Obviously I'd look at general condition of the bike, tyres etc. Is it clean. a quick check that it actually works I suppose, test the moving parts and that.

Cycle the bike. Ensure front and rear derailleurs/gears work smoothly. Make sure front and rear brakes work properly. Make sure there is no clicking from the crankset when pedalling. Lift the front wheel off the ground and spin it to ensure it’s running true/straight. Do the same for the rear. Other than that just a once over for dents/frayed gear/brake cables etc etc

I personally wouldn’t look at a bike with Sora 2200 shifters. It’s old technology (2007) and not very nice to use. If your willing to wait something more up to date will pop up for sale. I bought a 2018 Cube Attain with R2000 Claris (basically brand new bike bought on the BTW which had been cycled 4km) for €240 two weeks ago (got the original receipt with it, it cost €810 last October) and last year I bought a 2017 Merida Ride 100 which has been cycled less than 200 meters for €180, again a BTW bike that was never used) So my advice would be hang on and get something more up to date.

This would be a good buy if you could get it for around €350. Full Tiagra 4700 groupset which is light years ahead of Sora 2200, decent spec wheels and the bike looks like it hasn’t been used very much at all.

Got a new Cube Attain on Saturday in the Bike Store.

What about this >> https://www.donedeal.ie/view/22558895 full carbon bike for €350. It’s a 2010 bike but looks like it’s been well kept or not used much. Groupset is Ultegra/105 mix 10spd.

The only thing I’d do with that bike is loosen the stem face plate bolts and move the handlebars into a more standard position.

Another one where the bike is way too big for the owner.
Saddle slammed as low as it will go and hoods pointed at the sky.
There was never a 54 size in that frame 53 or 56 were the options.

It has the old 10 speed ultegra

If its within reasonable distance of you then yeah why not. Bring a set of allen keys to adjust the saddle height and handlebars as the way its set up at the moment it would impossible to know if its a good fit for you.

Yeah its a mix of 6700 Ultegra and 5700 105 and the crankset looks like FSA.

    http://www.beone-bikes.nl/media/files/BeOne_Catalogus_2010.pdf

I would factor in another few quid for new bars too, those look horrible, although you might like them, the shape with the sharp drop from the hoods wouldn't suit me and the shifter position on them (in the catalogue PDF) looks 'wrong'...bars are cheap, you'll get a decent set of bars for less than €30.

The bars don't look too out of place for 2010, many companies still supplied that style back then. The newer compact drop bars only became standard in more recent years.
