Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Back to business - sleet and snow is becoming more likely now. Maybe not to the same degree as 2010 but none the less the east will have wintry showers:)

Looking a little better after latest gfs and ecm with the arctic cold tap being switched on over Finland/western Russia. still think we will be waiting until week two or three of Dec if we are to see any snow here. Looking more likely every day though it must be said

Op, you can have some of our snow if you like! It's snowing and -10C right now and we're expected to get about 10-20 cm's by tomorrow.

But I don't mind the snow, hell we embrace the snow here! I love having a white Christmas! Sometimes we actually get too warm and it's a brown Christmas .

Check out this video to see how fast we get snow and how fast it can melt.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IgCilC7o1c

Just out of interest, have seasoned chart followers seen similar set ups in the past and have they gone pear shaped before delivering the goods at the last moment or are we into unknown territory?

Remember this one? The Govt decided to close all schools on the monday when heavy snow was forecast - a thaw set in on sunday.

To me it looked like she was setting the scene for a "possible" shift in weather towards a cooler setup once all the nasty wet crap passes! The more sure the pros get of colder weather to come the more their neck being to stick out to suggest it!

    yeah a bit puzzled myself.

Theres a very high probability of it being cold for the last week of November and into the start of December. Its been predicted on the models more on that off over the past month. The only danger is that storm on Sunday goes too far East and the Atlantic High builds over us. Then we may not even get severe frost.

Its hard to know if it will snow though as numerous variables could come into play like the origin of the Low or the sea temp or the fact that its Ireland and snow will just say feck that place im going to sleet.

I would say myself though that there will be one snowy morning at least out of this and Im nearly always .....wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,182 ✭✭✭pauldry

Evelyn mentioned it will be very cold until the start of December and showed a Polar Airmass over Ireland toward the end of the month and went through a lot of weather details in a very short time. Thats prob why shes a legend

Ah, Evelyn gives a good forecast:D There wasn't as much ramping as I thought but she's always so informative don't you think?:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,182 ✭✭✭pauldry

If it snows I reckon most of the Northern Half of Ireland will see it along with some more on the East Coast

Maybe places like Kerry and Cork will have to settle for it on Mountains barring Moorepark which seems to be a feckin freezin place

Just got this email in work:

Road Safety Alert – ICE & FOG FORECAST

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has issued a ‘Road Safety Alert’ today Friday 23rd November 2012, following a forecast from Met Éireann predicting a very cold night, with temperatures falling to between 0 and -3C. There will be a risk of widespread sharp or severe frost and the risk of some dangerous icy patches on untreated road surfaces. Some fog will also develop around dawn tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to be below normal for the next 10 days and night frosts are likely.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has the following advice for road users in ice and fog conditions.

Get a grip. Remember your only contact with the road surface is your tyres so it’s vital that they are up to the task in icy and snowy conditions. Check tyres, including spare wheel, and replace them if the tread depth falls below 3mm. Check that tyres are inflated to the correct tyre pressure. Lack of grip can occur even on treated roads so drive slowly in the highest gear possible, manoeuvre gently and avoid harsh braking. Replace tyres if necessary.

Make sure you can see. Clear your windows and mirrors before you set out, carry a screen scraper and de-icer. Do not use hot water on the windscreen as it can crack the glass. Replace windshield wiper blades if necessary. De-mist the inside of your windows thoroughly. Make sure your windshield washer system works and is full of an anti-icing fluid. Watch out for grit/salt spreaders.

Check & use your lights. Use your dipped headlights so that others will see you. Make sure your headlights and taillights are all in working order, replace broken bulbs.

Gently does it. Manoeuvre gently, slow down and leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front. Fog, rain, or hail will reduces visibility. Do not hang on to the tail lights of the vehicle in front of you as it can give a false sense of security. When you slow down, use your brakes so that the brake lights warn drivers behind you. Don’t forget to turn off your fog lights when the fog has cleared.

Watch out for "black ice." If the road looks polished or glossy it could be, "black ice” one of winter's worst hazards: Black Ice is difficult to see! It is nearly transparent ice that often looks like a harmless puddle or is overlooked entirely. Watch out for black ice, especially in sheltered / shaded areas on roads, under trees and adjacent to high walls.

Give yourself a brake. If you get into a skid, you need to know if your vehicle has ABS (Anti- Lock Braking Systems). After you "Step" on the brake the ABS begins cycling — you will feel pulses in the pedal or hear the system working. It's easy to properly use antilock brakes: Remember - Step, Stay and Steer. Step on the pedal. Stay on the pedal. Steer around the obstacle. (A warning: A little bit of steering goes a very long way in an emergency).

For vehicles without ABS, you'll have to rely on the old-fashioned ‘Cadence Braking’ system: Push the brake pedal until the wheels stop rolling, then immediately release the brake enough to allow the wheels to begin turning again. Repeat this sequence rapidly.

How does your vehicle help? Check in your owner’s manual and find out if your vehicle has any safety assist technology like Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Anti Lock Braking System (ABS) and know how they assist your driving in severe weather conditions. But remember technology offers no miracles. Don't let these lull you into overestimating the available traction.

Get informed. Listen to weather and traffic reports. The RSA has a new section of its website rsa.ie dedicated to ‘Severe Weather Advice for Road Users’. It has lots more useful advice on dealing with the difficult road conditions. INSERT Link

    Advice for Pedestrians & Cyclists;
While walking on footpaths and in public places, or entering and exiting your car or truck, DO NOT underestimate the dangers of frost and ice.

Each winter slips and fall accidents cause serious injuries. Even when surfaces do not look especially icy or slippery, it is very possible that a thin sheet of transparent ice or “Black Ice” is covering your pathway putting you at risk.

Many slips and falls happen in places people regard as safe and secure, typically outside their front door, on the door step, on the path or while getting out of the car.

If you are out walking in icy conditions wear appropriate footwear, don’t walk with your hands in your pockets, walk with your hands out and wear gloves so you can break your fall if you do slip.

Visibility is reduced in fog, hail or rain so wear high visibility clothing or carry a torch and if you cycle make sure your bike is fitted with lights front and rear.

For more advice on road use in winter and severe weather conditions please visit the Severe Weather Advice section of the RSA website.
