Wasn't specifically interested in the firepit example, just curious about injuries for pro athletes outside of their job as a whole. It seems to be pretty rare but I would be surprised if a highly paid athlete in a less physical sport would be allowed to ski black diamond runs for example.

Robbie Keane getting injured picking up the remote control springs to mind

And didn’t Santi Canazares miss the 2002 World Cup for Spain because he dropped a bottle of aftershave on his foot! In stepped Iker Casillas and poor aul Santi never got a look in again!

watching the state of origin earlier, cant understand why people are calling for the report system from the NRL to be brought over to union. cam munster kicks a player in the stomach while hes getting up - no card or penalty given, buts its fine because its put 'on report', despite being a blatant offence. What good is it to the team offended against if the offender gets a ban afterwards but can play the rest of the game. i'm not a fan of the red card replacement trial in the rainbow cup but even that seems like a better idea

IRFU have confirmed that Chris Busby is joining its high performance referee panel ahead of next season.

Busby joins Andrew Brace, Frank Murphy, and Joy Neville on the panel.

Good to see a non Munster MAR ref at the top level.

Report on Daily Telegraph website (behind paywall) that England v US and Canada games to be shown by Channel 4, the first England games outside the Six Nations and World Cup to be shown on terrestrial TV in quite a while.

There's an irony in that article being behind a paywall! Good to see

USA formally accepted as a bid candidate to host Rugby World Cup 2027, 2029 and/or 2031.

Would be great to see mens tournament in the Americas. 2027 would be ideal as would be after france and considering world rugbys conservatism could then see return to a "traditional" country in 2031

I think the USA would suck tbh. Massive country with minimal interest in rugby. Atmosphere would be zero. I’d rather Argentina.

There is huge potential for growth of rugby in US.
Argentina for a world cup would be great but madness to not look at US. You could focus tournament on north east of country or somewhere else. you dont need to play games across entire country

He could have chosen Ireland, but instead he has chosen the route to success and the Red Rose of England. Can you blame the guy? 13 Grand Slams compared to 3, and 4 World Cup Finals including one win compared to never having got past the quarters.

Englishman chooses to pursue English caps. Best of luck to him.

Eddie Jones loves bringing in dual-qualified players into squads but never actually capping them.

Adam McBurney who is joining Edinburgh from Ulster has been added to the Scottish squad for their games against Georgia and Romania next month

Have to disagree there. 7s tournaments have been consistently popular, and the US is one of the most sports enthusiastic countries around.

It's weird to see a Wales match on RTÉ and not having Conor O'Shea or Bernard Jackman giving out yards about the lazy forwards :pac:

Seen a piece in the Guardian, Quins are using 'smart' gumshields in training to identify collisions and their impacts and as a result giving players bibs to identify those that might be susceptible to injuries/concussion etc, and they've seen a massive drop in the number of injuries this season.

Seems like a no-brainer for teams to roll out.

Wales v Canada to air on BBC Wales, while their two games v Argentina will be on S4C.

This is rather interesting. 6 nations type of competition for South America.

Sounds like a massive waste of time for Argentina. I guess it will be an A team.

It is their A team. The Pumas still in the Rugby Championship

Its replacing the Americas Rugby championship so Colombia and Paraguay are replacing USA and Canada.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,916 ✭✭✭OldRio

That leaves USA and Canada out on a limb. Reading some of the comments it seems there has been a bit of a fall out.

I'd like a future by 2030 where the WC is eventually expanded to 24 teams. 2027 might be too soon, but hopefully by 2031.

South Africa and Georgia join an expanded 8 Nations championship.

Fiji and Japan join NZ, Australia and Argentina in the Rugby Championship.

USA, Canada, Uruguay, Tonga and Samoa have their own tournament.

European Nations with maybe Namibia replacing Georgia, plus Russia, Romania, Spain Portugal etc (although travel costs would be difficult for Namibia).

More time zone orientated competition rather than Hemisphere orientated would make more financial sense IMO.

Namibia would never be able afford that. Time zone might make more financial sense but would cause issues with competitiveness outside of the South African/Europe group over time as all the major tv earners would be in one group
