Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's fine yeah. I don't have a huge amount on it but haven't had any issues. It's the older one so should be slower but it's been fine for Netflix/Youtube/reading/sports score apps and a few crappy games. Just stuck the play store on it like the link earlier in the thread said and it's grand.

I doubt it. The Argos price is cheaper than Amazon's Black Friday deal by about €7!

Battery life is much better than the last version. I contacted Amazon support and asked them to remove the ads which they did :D

I'm in two minds as to whether or not one of these would be handy. We'll be away on holidays soon and it might be handy for our toddler to watch a bit of YouTube here and there. I was going to take the FireStick but this would be easier to whip out.

Go for the 7 or the 8? Really all it would be used for is YouTube.

The only reason I wanted the 10 was to read comics (maybe magazines too) in full screen. Other than that the 7 or 8 would be fine and for the money you can't go wrong.

Click on the > on the bottom right to move to the next page of the app. There is an option to restore everything Amazon.

If you then select remove everything Amazon select the manual option and just tick what you want to remove.

Have to say I'm delighted with this. Yes it's absolutely an advertisement for Amazon but it has all the functionality I could need for the little one. You really can't go wrong for €35 or thereabouts.

    Many thanks folks.

Just asked the same and they did it with no issue's. They really are super helpful.

    Guys,

I've a reservation for a black 32gb version for Argos Mahon Point that needs to be collected before 7pm this evening.

    Reservation price was €110.
They're back up to €180 now.

    Anyone want it?

Got one of these the other day and I'm following a YouTube tutorial to download the Google Play services links.

When I click the links, nothing downloads or installs.

I think I've managed to set it to install from unknown sources - went into settings, security and privacy, apps from unknown sources and have allowed Silk browser to install unknown apps.

But I still can't get the links in the YouTube video to download and install.

    For reference I'm using this video;

    https://youtu.be/Yl7wmFiCvCk

Not sure where I'm going wrong?

Anyone else on here who managed to install the Google play store encounter this?

Is there something I'm missing somewhere along the way?

Any advice would be most appreciated, thanks!

This is the guide I followed twice previously and worked fine , just take your time and there may be some slightly newer versions of files listed ,
Probably took 15 mins max and most of that was the downloading.

You need to install the version from the Amazon app store.

    Ah ok.

So run toolbox, manually reinstall the App Store (as opposed to automatically install all Amazon software), and we're good to go?
Or would I have to reinstall the Amazon launcher too?

I'll find out either way once I get home like.

No need for the Amazon launcher just the appstore app. You can download it from the device via https://www.amazon.co.uk/androidapp

These are reduced again today in Argos. Not quite as cheap as before though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 152 ✭✭fast_eddie

Also reduced again on Amazon UK, stg£109 for 32Gb with special offers.

Not a huge difference between that and €139 in Argos (also €139 in Currys)

the fire hd 8 and 10 are actually passable if you totally wipe the Amazon OS off it and replace it with lineage android (basically a version of normal android)

however, it's a messy job requiring linux/ ubuntu and I don't think that the latest fire hd 10 is even rootable yet.

did finally do it on a fire hd 8 and it's a massive improvement.

I think you're overstating the issue for a lot of light users. I'm a huge linux fanboy but my tablet is for watching shows on the way to college and reading the occasional book. Maybe some light web browsing too. I'm not a fan of amazon's os but it is usable and the toolkit listed before in the thread allows for a lot more non root customisation including replacing the loader. Recently my Fire HD mysteriously started using amazons default loader and over the xmas I didn't really have the time or need to replace it again. Was it a worse ux than nova launcher, of course. Could I get by if I could never replace it, sure.
If a tablet was my main piece of technology, I might have opted for something more open but as long as my home PC and laptop run the OS I want, my little media device with a screen won't bother me too much. Not to say I wouldn't love a cheap linux tablet that worked well, maybe someday.

sorry I meant that you need a laptop with linux on it to achieve the OS replace. it's not linux that goes on the tablet - it's a clean version of android.
(I ran ubuntu from a usb key off a laptop to do it), . for some reason you can't do it from windows on a laptop directly. there were other complications also over what is normally messy enough in terms of these sort of things - so not recommended unless you can put a few hours into it and work things out from unclear posts on xda forums.

I take your point about light users but I just hate the amazon os on these tablets and so many things don't work correctly in terms of installing playstore apps and the original OS always manages to update itself even if ota updates are supposedly turned off.

Bump, the Fire 8 is reduced in Argos to €54.99
Not much different from the Amazon price with the current exchange rate.
