Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

As to dew point indicating likely minima, this is a reasonable guide but there is a tendency for temp/dp couplets to drop a few degrees after midnight, so a minimum dew point of -6 now does not guarantee a minimum of -6 later.

    .

Yeah, that's what I was figuring. Dewpoints were about -4 or -5 earlier, so I reckoned it would drop a couple more overnight, limited by the already very icy conditions. At midnight now they're ranging -5 to -7 in the midland stations. Will be interesting to see how much further they will drop.

Folk's, we've discovered a new national sport - cheering on weather stations. :pac:

I guess it's what lockdowns does do to the soul of once sane men (and women). :D

If we had precipitation at the moment would we be flooded with snow. Or would it cause warming?

Sorry if I’m a bit late to this but I’m going to just stick with the Met Éireann stations and say that the low will -8.1°C and the station will be... Mount Dillon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,474 ✭✭✭Obvious Desperate Breakfasts

We’re all talking with some measure of amazement at the temperatures. I attended a funeral in the west of Ireland in December 2010 where the temperature outside during the morning mass was -8 °C. Thank FOOK we didn’t have to go to the graveyard that day (cremation) as I was NOT properly attired. :D

Just gone -7.5c here in Durrow as I get out the set of frosty keys to pad-lock this thread until... (um, whenever I get up) and re-open her for comments and evaluation of a very interesting night of extremely low temperatures across this fair Isle.

Good luck to all with their predictions, and at least a little fun was had in these testing times.

Enjoy the remainder of the night, and please God there are no burst pipes at yours come dawn.

-9.1 at Danno's location, -8.5 somewhere else within 50 km, I don't know the co-op network in much detail, but among the official stations, -7.4 at Oak Park.

Looking good MTC - a few observations still to pour over.

A -9.1c was recorded in Crerouge in Meath County. (https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IGALTR1)
A -9.0c was recorded in Garrymore on the Laois-Offaly Border (http://www.garrymoreweather.com/)

Just back from a long walk, footpaths are like glass up town. Checked the car temp this morning and showing -8c, not sure how accurate it is.

Of the official stations, -8.2 °C at Dunsany and Mullingar was the lowest.

I undershot the number, but I knew Dunsany would be the extreme value for last night.

Was that Casements lowest recorded temp since 2010?

Pathetic. -8.2c. Is that all you've got weather.

Weather: No. Tune in later this month for part 2 of this competition

-8°c is not to be sniffed at in Ireland

Its -4c in Moore Park at 9 pm. Shame milder airs coming in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,174 ✭✭✭pauldry

Wait a sec. Its -5c there now. Will it beat allcomers? 100/1 but interesting

Looks like I did okay with the extreme but there are probably guesses with lower total error in terms of 1-2-3 as my third in particular was 1.6 out. Anything that happens at Oak Park tonight would not qualify, the contest says "overnight low Jan 8-9" which has long since closed by any standard.

Yep, lowest since Christmas Day 2010. Which was its lowest ever at -15.7.

I think I overthought it a bit too much, wondering how dewpoints would react, etc. Or maybe I actually underthought it!

Bitter in Cork tonight. Feels the coldest its been, and two separate thermometers I have in my garden (which usually read the same as Cork airport) says its approx -3.7 at the mo. Moreover, looking on wow.met.ie, there seem to be temperatures from ca. -2 to -6 showing in stations within 30km of me. However, Cork Airport (5km from me) is showing 1c at midnight. Anyone?

Milder air aloft, and that dreaded "marine layer" also. Cork Airport is in a hill so is tapping into that mild sea air.

Most of the low temps across the south are owing to cold pooling and clear skies. At this stage the Atlantic has pushed well across the country at upper levels of the air.

Many thanks. Amazing really as I'm only about 70m lower than it. The -6 is in Bandon which is probably 130m lower than the airport but its only 26km from the airport so 7c is quite the difference.

Actually I see Moore Park is reading -5 at midnight which is how it feels. Also Cork Airport reports its weather as "smoke" - presumably related to that fire in Ringaskiddy earlier. I wonder is that a factor too?

Yes, still enough smog in the air to warrant a warning.

I seen -6c in Bandon, and the height difference would explain that!
