Hosting removing my files

Apologies if this should not be discussed here (where then?). I purely need advice and I hope I dont abuse anyone here.
I use one of most popular Irish hostings for last few months. I utilise limited disk space so I uploaded some of my archives (tars) to have them accessible online.
I discovered today someone from hosting (I hope) removed them this week. Nothing else seems to be touched and I cant see anything in logs as far as I am skilled.
Question - is it something "normal" and I just should not up-fill my hosting space with random stuff because it will get removed? Or I should report it even for sake of security (I'm 100% sure accountant wasn't compromised)? As I said this were recoverable data and the only loose here is bandwith I used to upload them.

You really need to ask your hoster. There could be many reasons for removal, and it's going to depend on the T&Cs of your specific plan. They may have policies against any of:
    • specific filetypes
    • files over a specific size
    • questionable content (any executables or copyrighted media in these files?)
    • anything that would cause security concerns
Only one way to find out for sure

Thanks @28064212, I was not sure if I am not breaking some hosting etiquette I'm not aware of ;)

What suprised me is that I got no warning or explanation - when I first saw files gone I nearly got heart attack and I spent 2 hours checking logs and remaining content in case of site being compromised.

Some hostings have virus checkers running and suspect files will get put into quarantine automatically and possibly deleted. Unexpected tar files would definitely be suspect.

I am refilling my diskspace again and this time I'm going to monitor it better to see what will happen ;)

I got emailed from hosting on email I don't read regularly and it explained a lot.

They demand to not store files not connected with actual website and pointed to their tricky T&C which I obviously never read (it is 36000 words long). T&C wording is pretty tricky as far as I read but I'm not going to fight with them, I wasted too much time already.

I am not going to reveal here who they are as I presume this is forbidden, but I have to confess I had already problems with them while working for few clients and this was like giving them a chance - and failed. Will do continue discourage people from using them in any possible occasion as there is number of slightly more expensive but much more reliable companies and con artists like them should be removed from hosting market asap.

I don't see the issue. Your web hosting is there to host your website not for somewhere to store zip and tar files. There are plenty of places online where you can store your files for free such as google drive. I wouldn't even consider storing other files on my websites hosting account.

In old times before advent of Dropbox and Google Drive people used to use FTP storages pretty lot but I see it is not cool anymore ;)

Add a page (non public) to your site with a link to the tar file... it might then become a legitimate file to host.??? Worth a try :)

what's the purpose of your .tar files? they might have filled your account to max capacity and caused your site some issues in functioning normally. You can use Google Drive for saving tar files

Google is free - they can remove my tars any day without even telling me.
If I pay I am at least on position to ask why.

They will and do if it receives a large amount of traffic. Its not a free CDN.

They shouldn't remove any of your files without prior notification this called breach of good relationship. I wouldn't use them as my hosting company.

I'm not using them and also learnt to familiarize with T&C first but problem is market is shrinking and competition gets smaller and smaller. Like banks or insurance market in Ireland - customer position is weakening and nobody give a fox about good relationship when customers have no or very little choice.

I wouldn't completely agree as I see lots of good hosting companies at decent price. Based in US, CA, DE in really good data centers.

Agree - Germany they have some incredible offers with really small money and even basic hosting. But number of Irish companies tend to use Irish hosting for some reason. Not even mention insurance or banking.

For critical applications you must use local infrastructures and have physical access when require. But ordinary websites, shopping carts, forums, etc is irrelevant. What do you have in mind?

I did a little job few months ago for small estate agents from Dublin, they were on some crap reseller hosting. I migrated them to one of biggest hostings in Ireland as they wanted to stay "local".
I also moved their website to WordPress and they blamed new hosting for number of WordPress related issues ;) (still not happy with migration).
And they were mostly younger than me ;))))

Perhaps people feel safer buying locally that you could always come back for refund. Not too sure tbh.

I found US servers have far better performance vs Irish based servers.
    Just my opinion.

From what I remember they were concerned about SEO but on a pretty dummy level like "I red somewhere that we get higher in google" etc... I am not SEO specialist and I didn't argue with them.
(I hope this is not going to start long SEO discussion here ;)

    Yes and No.

If you run search for top ranking websites in Ireland (link below) you would see none of them hosted in Ireland including donedeal, RTE, Irishtimes etc

I don't believe that is the case. The IP address is pointing to a US location, but that's just because it uses CloudFlare protection. The actual files and data are still (AFAIK) located in Ireland
