...every five buildings in a given city is labelled as a "quarter" these days. Galway has a "Latin Quarter"

Fact is - Grafton St is pretty much a shadow of its former self. Practically no high end independent retailers now, all chain stores, mobile phone shops and fast food outlets.

Don't see the problem. Destination Marketing has been very very successful in the country. I remember being guffawed and sneered by locals at when the Wild Atlantic Way was first mooted.

Look at it now. They're tagging it in their social media and are very very boastful about their WAW.

Other cities and countries can forge ahead with this sort of marketing with confidence and aplomb, but there's a real fear and lack of faith among some Irish people. Anything "cool", or mainstream European is mocked at as having "notions" or being "American"!! Same happened when Dublin's Chinatown was mooted, hecklers and snipers sniggering behind their keyboards.

It's a good way of sectioning up the city from a tourist (non commuter, not local) perspective.

Christmas lights that are paid for by the businesses in that area to encourage people to come in to the city to shop.

Christmas lights have always been about marketing really. Make everyone happy and jovial. Build a bit of Christmas cheer blah blah blah. Oh and while you are hear spend a load of money.

If the council or Bord Failte want to spend public money on them and make them culturally significant or highlight the buzz word of the day by showing diversity, understanding, building a multi something environment etc they can. People will then moan about the waste of tax payers money.

Sorry now but Nollaig Shona Duit was a simple, festive, welcoming and uniquely Irish Christmas message.

I can’t believe they’ve gone and got rid of something that was a unique selling point for dublin and Ireland in general.

The names are used to promote tourism and give distinct characters to different parts of Dublin City.

They're not forcing you to use the names.

I noticed that when I got off the Luas at Connolly and walked down towards Parnell and third to use a restroom

I like that quarter implies that there is more to the Grafton area than just that 1 street. Some lovely pubs and cafes in and around there and if they can piggyback off the "Grafton Street" reputation then more power to them.

We're not going to start renaming streets because people are offended by the creation of mini districts that are handy for tourists to navigate. As line of beauty points out it simply lets tourists know that there's more to the area than just Grafton street.

I wasn't being serious. You may have missed that. Do tourists have to be spoon fed everything? I managed to navigate cities without it needing to be cut up into twee little quarters for me.

There's a huge cohort of tourists that will not navigate cities without a tour guide, let alone a dedicated tour map denoting specific areas and what those areas are called.

Another annoying example is The Italian Quarter in Sligo, presumably named so because it's a street which has an Italian restaurant on it.

To think someone was paid (probably hundreds of thousands of Euro) to produce that would sicken your hole.
