Anyone have the information booklet handy?

Didn't make it through myself. Working as a tax manager in practice with 13 years experience counts for little!

Please don’t take this the wrong way!

If you didn’t get through with that background then there must be a problem with your approach to the form. (Or else somebody made a mistake.)

Anecdotally, some quite well qualified people fill in these forms with a noticeably haughty attitude, effectively saying “pffffft, of course I can do this job, look at all my qualifications!” without realising that regardless of your qualifications you actually need to set out how the qualifications and experience you have make you a good candidate for the job.

As far as the process is concerned, you’re the seller and they’re the buyer, and it’s a buyer’s market.

I hear what you're saying alright, though I did cover the bases of what were set out on the job spec in the box that was filled out. I still wasn't hugely surprised, so just mildly annoying!

It is strange. Is there an appeal/review/feedback process in place? If you intend on applying again you could do with knowing.

That's disappointing, there is a feedback form you can request. It may be helpful.

I know 3 people going forward, all serving Revenue staff.

One EO, a qualified accountant, not AITI.
One HEO (actually the EO’s line manager!) also an accountant (chartered), not AITI.
One AP, chartered accountant and AITI.

I know two going forward both accountants but no tax qualification. One has worked in a tax focus role for a number of years and both have significant audit experience.
Theres also an audit panel being formed from this campaign if I recall correctly.

Why is an existing tax AP going for a tax AP role? Is it a location thing?

Just did the video interview. The most stressful part was the 10 minutes it took each part to upload. And the part where my iPad toppled sideways midway through a recording not sure we are set up for this kind of thing out here in the sticks!! Still. At least it's done. Good luck everyone!

Yeah I did ask for the form in case there was something constructive, but it was real cya stuff! I do think they should target accountants for the audit and compliance roles, from my experience on revenue audits they tend to focus on the wrong things, someone from an accounting background would do a better job than a tax person I think.

Anyhow best of luck to those going forward, always good to have some regeneration there!

Is there a break in between each question or is the recording straight through? Thanks

It's really well designed, each question is a separate click through screen. There is a built in 1 minute prep time and then the three minute recording. Each segment uploads, then you click through to the next question. At the start there is an example recording where you can check your sound and lighting.
I had to email the support crowd as I used an iPad which doesn't use the Chrome application identified in the circular. There's a really good App available for idevices.

Really surprised at the short notice to record the interview. I'm away for the weekend until Monday night so feeling a little on the back foot!

Does anyone have a copy of the information leaflet they wouldn't mind sending on? I just tried to open mine and it seems to have corrupted and I'll need to record my answers tomorrow so can't email Revenue for a copy.

    Either way good luck all!

Just to note, of the people I know who got through - none of them have accountancy or taxation qualifications

It is strange that they gave you such short notice. If I find the form this evening, I'll send it through to you

What kind of qualifications do they have?

I have to say, for a Tax Specialist role, that is quite bizarre. Unless the person spec differs drastically from the one for last year’s equivalent competition, a person with neither an accountancy nor tax qualification shouldn’t be advancing.

I believe they have the qualifications to get them over the line but they realise they have a difficult time ahead of them. As far as I know, Revenue have never explicitly asked for professional qualifications for competitions before. Doesn't mean that the managers doing the shortlisting aren't applying more weight to those candidates though...

I think you might misunderstand me.

The person spec for the 2018 competition, while it didn’t make professional accountancy / tax qualifications a requirement, set out various skills/experience, such as:
    - experience as a manager in large professional firms
    - planning & conducting audits of larger businesses
    - forensic accounting
    - transfer pricing
    - devising & implementing tax planning/ tax mitigation for complex businesses

In other words, I am struggling to see how a person without who isn’t an accountant or tax consultant is likely to be able to hit any / many of the desirable skill sets.

Regardless of how wonderful the qualifications of your person are, if you presented me with a person with relevant qualifications AND experience as an accountant or tax adviser in practice and industry in a managerial role, then I don’t care what PhD your person has - they simply can’t compete (not without going away and intensively retraining for several years).

Maybe the spec for this competition is different though..?? If it’s not, then I’d have serious concerns about the screening process, if people without relevant qualifications and experience (as per the person spec) are being progressed, while others with both, are not.

did you talk for the full 3 minutes on each question? i feel i have too much to say. Ive written out some answers might have to cut it back. Im also afraid of a technology fail

  • Registered Users Posts: 414 ✭✭Emma2019

Anyone know how much time we have between recording each question? I wouldn't mind a few minutes to reread the question before recording the answer.

I did it on Saturday morning and now cant remember. I think you can take whatever time you need. Then there's a minute of prep time once you enter.

I've allowed access to camera and microphone for Firefox and Chrome and it's still telling me I need to give permission. Anyone had this issue?

    Two questions:

    1) Does the video automatically time out after 3 minutes?

    2) Do we know how many got through to the video interviews? Did those who got a refusal get told how many applied and got through etc.

Yes the video times out after 3 minutes, learned this the hard way. Although I was aware it would after the example question and still got caught.

No idea how many got through to this stage, I doubt they would tell applicants that information as a matter of course.

    .

Cheers, I'm assuming that example question does not get graded, at least I hope it doesn't?

It caught me off guard ha.

No, doesn't get graded. That would be very sneaky of them. Well done on getting through it.

It's done now anyways! Hopefully we won't have to wait too long to hear back from them! System was easy to use!

Is anyone in the know of when we might be likely to hear back and when the interviews would likely be on?

Thinking of booking a holiday but don't want to miss the interview if I hopefully get called
