Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Plenty of nice estates in the town, but it depends on what you're looking for.

    Gortlandroe area has several and you're only a puck of a ball form the local GAA club.

    Borrisokane Rd has a few nice estates and you're only a short walk from the soccer club and pitch and put

    Tyone/Ballygraigue rd has some nice estates and you're within a sprint of the local rugby club training grounds and the athletics complex.

    All areas would have a local shop for convenience purchases and the town has a Dunnes, Tescos, Aldi and Lidl.

    Whats Mac Donagh st/Summerhil/kenyon st like? There seems to be loads of cheap property around the centre. Any particular reason? Would there be any market for renting out property?

    Townhouses, a lot of them over 100 years old

    The ones in Summerhill may have a nice large garden out the back

    Hah, I didn't know MacDonagh St, I always called that Dublin Road. Shows what I know! :o

    Once there may have been demand for offices and a lot of these would be used for that but no demand anymore.
    Like a lot of towns the biggest shops are outside the town so it dies a bit, now you're seeing cheap property in the centre

    They may seem cheap but due to age you'd have to check it out fully, could be issues like have to rewire them or put in piping, an engineer could check all this

    I wouldn't fancy Kenyon St, yeah it's central but it's busy with traffic noise during the day and drinkers and fast food crowd at night.

    Summerhill is quiet, bit run down looking but nothing wrong with the area

    Just when buying a lot (most?) would prefer a modern house slightly outside. Just what I think

    Renting is different, you should be able to rent Kenyon St no bother to maybe young working people

    Found out only last night that Joseph O'Connor (Joey) of the former O'Connor's Shopping Centre died last week, RIP.

    Kind of surprised to see no mention of this here so far.

    Remember those announcements by him over the P.A. system? :D

    Joey must have been a fair age. I worked there in the mid-late 80s and I'd say he was about 65 back then.

    See the old ACC bank seems to be refitted on the main street - anyone any idea whats going in there?
    Also the old wine buff (at the bus stop) seems to be in the process of being fitted out.
    The phoneshop "3" seems to have moved from Quentins way to the premises beside McCarneys which seems kinda odd to me.

    Thanks. I haven't lived in Nenagh for nearly 20 years. I only get down once or twice a year now.

    Love him or hate him, Joey was a legend. He gave a lot of employment during the hard times. I must check the Guardian website. There's bound to be a few pages about him.

    If there was a thread deleted maybe there was abuse posted on it.

    Tributes flow on death of Nenagh’s retailing king

    Tributes were paid this week to Nenagh’s leading businessman and entrepreneur Joseph O’Connor, whose Funeral Mass and burial is to take place in the town this Wednesday.
    Mr O’Connor, the founder of one of the country’s largest independent retail companies, is to be buried in Lisboney Cemetery after his Requiem Mass at 1.05pm in Saint Mary of the Rosary Church.
    A distinguished and highly successful member of the North Tipperary business community, the former town and county councillor died on Sunday last.
    Mr O’Connor, who was born in 1925, is deeply regretted by his loving wife Nora, sons Rory, Donal, Joseph Coleman and Michael, daughters Agnes Holmes, Deirdre O’Connor, Catherine Quinn, Celestine Ward, Elizabeth Robertson and Edel Ferncombe, grandchildren, extended family, nephews and nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.

    It's probably a cheaper rent on kenyon street, for three.ie than on quentin's way.

    I'll be keeping an eye on what's going into which premises - want to ensure the data/map of Nenagh on openstreetmap.org is up-to-date!

    Also there is much more passing trade and traffic on Kenyon street Pat should do well there. Best of luck to him.

    I was considering buying a place to rent out, but I am not sure how much rental demand there would be. I would assume most younger renters would be moving away for work to Dublin etc. Or would the rental market be stronger than that? Its hard to know what places are renting for by using Daft and myhome.

    Definitely more passing trade, Quentins Way and Friars Court are very poor retail areas.
    New 3 shop looks nice as well.:p

    I quite like Quentins Way, a lot of potential there. (Not arguing with your logic above) I wonder if they fully roofed the street and had more areas for outside dining. Might be a way to boast the street.

    A fully roofed area with dining all around would be a great idea. It's problem is the lack of a draw for people to go down there.
    Footfall can be very poor down there most days and because of that, it;s not suited for all types of shops.
    Farmers Market on Saturdays is dying a slow death as well, which is a pity.
    Too many clothes shops there though and all ladies nearly.

    I've also been thinking about some "synergies" to create jobs in the town. (Limerick City has a similar thread)

    Anyone got any ideas in terms of the large employers and potential spin-off jobs that could be created to support / benefit from them.

    The main industrial employers in Nenagh I'm thinking are

    Careys Glass
    Meat Factory
    Creamery
    Proctor & Gamble

    The only cross over I can see there would be in terms of food-stuffs between the Meat Factory and the Creamery. Maybe a food ingredients business similar to Glanbia or one of those.

    I also understand Quigleys bakery supply quite a few bakeries from the old Rorer Industrial estate so again maybe something to do with food ingredients.

    I can't think of any real spill overs from Careys besides installation of glass. I understand that the actual manufacture of the glass is done in England and shipped over. Its a pity we couldnt produce the glass here in Ireland but seemingly it is cheaper to import. Perhaps with the rising price in fossil fuels there may be a tip over point where producing the glass for Careys glass could be viable. If that could be done in Nenagh all the better.

    Anyone got any other ideas for using local resources / existing jobs-base to create more jobs in the town / area?

    Maybe this is too much for this thread and if a new thread needs to be created then thats fine.

    I know a few other towns have had initiatives like this in the past few years.

    I was a member of that business network and it's no longer running unfortunately.

    A lot of the female business people are members of Network North Tipp which is a great initiative and running quite well, I hear.

    I am a member of Derg Business Alliance which is held in Limerick but encompasses Limerick, Clare and Tipp. The group is 30 strong and in full swing. I've been trying to promote it to local businesses but many don't show an interest. Their loss, I suppose!

    Nice little write up for the town. The area around the castle / courtyard and heritage centre is a nice a town centre as there is around. What really impresses me is the lack of anti-social behavior around that particular area.

    Tank check the first page were there is a list of pubs in Nenagh. I'd personally recommend The Kenyon or The Hi-Bi for matches.

    Avoid Ormond Keep. Im in the process of leaving the estate. Theres a fierce rough element living there now. Our house was broken into and ransacked. Cant get out of there quick enough. I feel sorry for those left behind as we had some very nice neighbours

    Really?

    Place must have gone downhill so.

    I was there shortly after it was built and there were lovely people in there, mainly young workers and young families

    There was even a GP who opened a surgury and worked from home.

    The council hasn't done much building in a long while, maybe they are renting lots of houses for their list as the owners move on and go elsewhere
    (I'm not judging all people on the council list)

    You probably have this sorted by now, but on the off chance that you haven't.
    Dr Tom Hayes and Dr O O'Keeffe Flannan St (Beside boys national school),
    Or if you would prefer a female doctor there is a Dr Murnane located beside the Proctor and Gamble factory.

    As regards your choice of hospital, most people from Nenagh area would use St Munchins Maternity hospital in Limerick. This is probably more to do with travel times than anything else.

    I spotted a new alterations shop after opening on Mitchell St. There seems to be some works going on another old shop on the street as well. A new tattoo parlour opened on Mitchell St also. Seems to be a lot of regeneration along here.

    I noted what looks like a "vintage" shop opening down the one way street at the back of Sheehans.
    Don't know anything else about it.

    I saw a sign on the front of a country choice talking about a beer and cheese night in Una Powels this Thursday night. The beer is a craft beer if anyone is into that kind of thing.

    Ya I've used it, refills in 10-15mins. Price seem about the norm. No probs at all with them.
