A week early and we're away.

AAX bull from a FR4338 first calver.

Was talking to someone who's cows started calving up to 17 days early. Sheds not ready and withdrawal of tubes will be a problem too.

2 during the night here. 1 at 2 am and a backwards fr bull at 5.45am. All good. Jacked the backwards one out

    Hints:
Keep the jack level for longer, don't squash the chest. Cows take longer to open so beware going too early, allow arse to dilate the cervix. Only hurry once calf's tail is fully out and even then there's no panic. Calf is already ideally strung to jack to be elevated by levering the jack up using the cow end on the ground.

The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It's to promote critical thinking.

Had a heifer calf here on Tuesday evening. Bull calf by Zag. I had to jack him out cos she was calfing in an awkward spot and wouldn't get up. Couldn't get him to suck. I stomach tubed him. Got vet yesterday evening. She gave him steroids and a boaster injection. 2 last night and 2 today. He's up and sucking this morning. Thank god

Old cap was a disaster. New cap is most welcome

If you’re giving dry cows minerals on the silage and blocks, and the heifers can access it (as opposed to being bullied away by cows) then imagine they should be ok for iodine unless a very severe issue. On the milk fever, heifers usually much better at mobilising calcium from bones than old cows - so would expect it would be your older fatter cows which would have issues as opposed to heifers.

Possible as well that could be an infectious agent - partic if only heifers affected as new to cows - do you vaccinate for Lepto?

As this certainly isn’t normal, my advice would be to get your vet out and follow their advice regarding blood tests etc to try to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks very much for that! Yes heifers vaccinated for Lepto. Rang vets on Wednesday and the one that answered basically said nothing could be done. Had a cow down with milk fever and another heifer that we thought was calving so got them out yesterday. Different vet this time and he threw all possible options at us. Blooded about a quarter of the heifers ( a mix of calved and incalf) and bloods dropped to lab. Also took one of the calves to the lab on Wednesday. Hopefully get results start of next week.
Atm just gone to go in and calve the heifers at the earliest possible opportunity until we get results back and get minerals made up to suit.
The heifers are well conditioned but not overfat I would think. Put it this way I’d be worried if they were a good bit thinner.

Thanks a million for all the responses. Will definitely cut back on the K on silage ground.

Green hay ad lib if you can get your hands on it. It must be green.
Grass silage with a high inclusion of clover or better still pure clover silage. Both green hay and clover are very heavy with phosphate.

Thanks! I’ll keep an eye out for it!

Started here now as well. 1/30 the way there! Nice heifer calf with a wee pull. Cow calves herself but she messed about all day doing nothing.

    22 Calved

    12 Friesian heifers
    1 AA heifer
    9 Friesian bulls

1 heifer from above was a conventional straw and rest sexed
3 of the bulls were sexed straws

we lost 1 of the 12 heifers, left the heifer/1st lac for 30 mins to progress after handling and came back calf out and gone, would of been granddaughter to cow that done near 800kg solids last year.

lost a set of twins but they were gone a day or so before calving for whatever reason. we have one live set of twins so 21 live calves from 22 calved

Had a heifer calved this morning. She wasn't supposed to be in calf.. had a fr heifer calf. Reckon it was a fr bull that nearly died about 20 times that I was afraid to squeeze in case he died that put her in calf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,524 ✭✭✭grassroot1

Surprise set of twins second calf dead.
6 calved so far 3 have had twins, one cow lay on one of the twins and this mornings disaster.
    Ever onward

First one born last night, a little charolais heifer. 2 more for tonight I'd say in calf to the sim.

Kicked off here today, 2 calved, both had heifer calves. Closest we've been to the due dates starting in a long time, normally would be a week to 10 days before planned start they'd be landing, only 3 days this year.
Dried off a row of cows as well, will dry off the last of them in 2 weeks time.
Best of luck everyone for the season

Cow due the end of December still holding on here :o
Heard roaring from the shed at 6am (I sleep with the window open) so went down to see what was up. Bull having a field day roaring at a heifer in the pen opposite him. Ass :pac:

Took her til 303 days, nice bull calf, came very CH-ish like the mother, big boney, growthy calf, took a pull on the ropes alright.

Do you still have the bull that had all the calving difficulties last year?

Bruchag glenfiddich X clonagh direct debit x raceview King. Another one after calving a handy little heifer to him outside there now as well.

He should be easy calved so.

Have cow here not eating since Thursday. Her time is up. Had vet Friday morning and he couldn’t see anything wrong with her but still not eating today so I injected to induce her at 12pm today.

    Playing the waiting game now.

So far so good anyway, pulled a handy little bull calf with just the ropes out of the black cow but she'd have had no bother if I left her to it. Hopefully it stays going like this, some difference to winching the calves out of them like last year.

Had a limousine heifer calf yesterday evening. I gave her a saler bull hoping for a heifer and out pops a bull. Good strong lively calf and mad to suck.

    16 calved here. 17 calves.

9 fr heifers (4 from sexed semen)
    6 fr bulls

She’s back eating and drinking this morning which is good. but no no sign of her to pop albeit pins are well dropped.

I went out this morning to get ivy and I caught her eating on the phone so left the ivy in the ditch as fairly wet morning here.

She was chewing the cud away too this morning.

Cow calved at 6pm this evening (during Liverpool match!!). Had a fine lively bull calf and threw him herself so got to see end of the match and then went out to her.

Great results all round.....!! Big game next Sunday now.

Good stuff, did she clean, they often hold the cleaning for a few days when they're induced.

Do any of you give the cow a bucket full of warm water with salt, after calving supposed to bring on the cleaning.

or when a cow is not showing an interest in her calf, to rub meal onto the wet calf.

Throw the meal alright, if needed
    Generally a first calver

Use the bucket always......use salt on calf.....meal is too messy for me. Dash of salt all over especially the head also keeps them away from navel. Some of them go mad for iodine.
