During the SARS crisis they built a new hospital in one week.
They're racing to build a new 1,000-bed hospital in just six days, beginning on Thursday night.

Can we not get these guys to build the new Childrens hospital in Dublin ?
And maybe a couple more for good measure ?

In the city of Wuhan, where most cases have occurred, the race to build a new 1,000-bed hospital in just six days began on Thursday night. Diggers and bulldozers beginning work on the site of a holiday complex once intended for local workers, according to Chinese media.

The hospital, which is due to open next week, is similar to those established in Beijing in 2003, when the city faced a Sars outbreak that killed almost 800 people and reached nearly 30 countries.

During that crisis, 7,000 workers in Beijing built the Xiaotangshan hospital in its northern suburbs in just a week. Within two months, it treated one-seventh of all the country’s Sars patients, the Changjiang Daily said.

Built in 6 days, on the verge of collapse after 6 years. Not known for building quality over there.

Same with swine flu. A load of bollox.
Swine flu was sorted out by a bunch of airborne rabbis back in the day. Turns out all you have to do is go up in a plane and blow into a ram's horn, swing your bonce back and forth and shout into a telephone. Easy as pie.

Not sure what the cure for Coronavirus is. Maybe you've to whistle loudly or something.

I'm sure that research theologians in Riyadh, Rome and Jerusalem are working hard on the problem anyway.

    This is a joke

    Irish Independent Headline

    Belfast Telegraph Headline

Gotta keep the minions scared though. Why let facts get in the way of a terrifying story?

Earlier on the radio news, when the virus was their No1 story, they said a man was being checked out in a Dublin hospital for symptoms too, but was found not to have the virus. So why even mention it?

Yeah I wonder if fox will report on the 6600 deaths in the US this flu season. Figures released by the CDC on the 22 January.

Remember when Ebola was going to kill us all? Or SARS? Or Swine Flu? Mass hysteria as usual and the media are loving it. Wait until this illness becomes boring and you won't hear anything more about it. Live your life, relax and don't believe the sensationalist nonsense out there..

Except, these diseases did kill many people

Just because you live on an island, don't think it can't happen

Of course not, doesn't fit the narrative.

Same as Ireland's 84 flu deaths this winter.

See the posts above and below yours, standard flu is killing way more people.

If this got out and spread across the world, it be a killer. China admits to 1000 infected, 41 dead.  It not the way to do it, but just for argument- 10,000 got infected in a small town that'll be over 400 death people. In a country like Ireland that could cause thousands of deaths.

People fear China lowballing the number of people dying from this virus, and still unclear if this unnecessary panic and they have under control and Social media overreacting.

We still have not got a breakdown of the ages of people dying and their medical condition after this virus started spreading in last week to two weeks.

Lets hope, this not some virus that somehow escaped from one of those Biolabs in Wuhan?

This isn't something you can draw parrallel's with when it comes to any countries flu outbreak - we lose 100's here every year from flu but it mainly kills groups of people who already have depleted immune systems. By the looks of it this strain of Coronavirus could doesn't care of you're formally healthy or not...it doesn't discriminate.

Hopefully it will be contained that is getting harder to do these days

Apart from the rampant NIMBY ism here, are old folk suddenly dispensable?

The authorities are 100% right to take all possible precautions. They know what they are doing and why.

In absolute terms it is but only because the new virus hasn't spread all around the world the same way flu has. The more intelligent thing to ask is what is the fatality rate of the virus compared to the flu and how contagious is it compared to the flu. If it has a higher fatality rate and/or it is more contagious then we should be worried.

Airport alert as lethal coronavirus on our doorstep, Belfast patient in isolation

Five other patients were being tested for the virus in Scotland
Safety measures stepped up in the Republic as hospitals, GPs and the ambulance service were issued with guidelines

No security measures in Dublin Airport. I flew in from Xi'an on Wednesday night arriving on Thursday morning at 10 am. Not one check in Xi'an, Istanbul, or Dublin.

This is going to be a big story - every person passes on to 2.5 people.

The incubation period can vary from one to 14 days, with a typical duration of about 10 days.

This could be an election issue if we start getting cases.

For the population of china and the current death rate id assume the common flu etc has killed more over there in the last week.

If some drug company has a vaccine for cancer, they'd become extremely rich. It doesn't serve their interests to hide it.

Honestly we should put countries in quarantine with a travel ban until its sorted.

Surely being a small island nation with a limited number of entry points it should be (relatively) easy to control people coming in?
    Maybe I am being naive?

Exactly. Close our borders. Nobody allowed on or off our Island incase either a foreigner or one of our own arrives with it.

Considering that I, and many other Irish people (I personally know four other Irish people who returned), along with Chinese nationals have already arrived in Ireland from China within the last week or so.... it might be a bit late... ;)

Spring festival is a popular time for Irish people living in China to return home for a holiday.

But I can't imagine it would be too difficult to do... although it might make more sense to actually start screening arrivals..

I know it's a Monday morning so things are slow :)

If the outbreak gets much worse on a Worldwide basis and comes over here to Ireland (and gets serious), then I might buy a face mask to help me resist inhaling the airborne virus (on the Dart) for example. Millions of people in China & other countries are wearing face masks to try and stop the spread.

    Is that any clearer?

Whats the success rate of not catching it when using the mask?

    I doubt there are stats.

Millions of people in Asia wearing them as a precaution, can they all be misled or wrong?

I'm guessing a paper dust mask would provide some protection. Maybe goggles too?

Add a set of goggles to your list as its just as possible to be infected via your eys as it is your mouth, just wearing a face mask really doesn't reduce infection chance at all.

They are indeed all wrong but they are not being misled, they're told it's effectively useless. The N95 mask prevents inhaling particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. The corona-virus is 0.12 microns in diameter i.e. the holes in the mask are a little over twice the size of the virus itself.

The main reason people in China wear masks is air pollution. The have an air pollution forecast in the same way we have a weather forecast. Obviously, a second reason they wear it is to stop the spread of viruses but it is ineffective against the corona-virus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,036 ✭✭✭circadian

Apparently surgical masks are much more effective than the N95 masks that people are using.

I thought that *usually* the people wearing masks are the one's that are under the weather and are trying to stop spreading whatever they have.

I heard an epidemiologist on channel 4 news saying he’s never been more concerned about a virus. He said China will do a good job in containing it there because they use authoritarian means to control their population, but he’s not so confident about other countries being successful in containing it once it spreads beyond China.

Oh, and those masks are of no use whatsoever. The only way to avoid it is to stay home, close schools etc. obviously that only becomes necessary when it starts to spread in a population. Best to stock up the freezer just in case :D

Generally yes it's more a case of someone not wanting to spread their cold or whatever. It's not a bad idea but thinking it'll stop you from getting this virus or others is misguided.

How many of the 1.386 billion people in china are infected or have been killed?
2% (maybe slightly higher) fatality rate (still too early so be certain on this).
With a daily increase of 150% or 1.5 figure (official figures from state gov, so add some salt). So lets do the maths to calculate.

    2000
    3000 (end of yesterday)
4500 expected at end of today
    6750
    10125
    15187
    22781
    34170
    51257
76886 for this time next Monday...

The current theoretical infectious figure is actually 2.5

I read somewhere that the cotton masks are pretty useless. The surgical masks are a little better but supposedly their main benefit is to reduce the amount of contact your hands have with your face.

We touch our faces on average just over 3 times per hour. The mask reduces the amount of germs being spread between our face and objects/others around us because our hands aren't directly touching our noses/mouth as often.
