Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That was one sexy win. Delighted

Awesome, he had to make a move, was never going to win a sprint, and the collective Spanish/Belgian fail of looking at each other hands him a well deserved second monument. Delighted after the year he has had, you have to think he could have done something at the worlds too if he had had better luck.

Superb from Dan. Attacked like a rocket, lots of looks around from the rest of the gang & all he had to do then was make it round the last bend. And sure that was never in doubt.

Tactically well-played, very discreet in the last position of the group for the last 5k, and then attack on the other side of the road

Ooooh gosh I feared the last turn ^^

Bloody newstalk no mention of the win during "a roundup of what's going on today in the world of sport". Go to an ad break and immediately play an interview (albeit excellent) with Stephen Roche most of which concentrates on doping.

    Brilliant win from Dan.

He should be getting a lot more attention in the Irish media for what he has achieved in the sport.

Last week, you see Conor McGregor with the hype and much of it for me is undeserved when comparing it to the achievements that other Irish sports people have done in their respective fields.

Dan in particular is one who falls in this category.

Last year after winning Liege, Catalunya & one of the best stages of the TdF, he didn't even get on the list of 10 or so for the Irish Sportsperson of the Year. Those things in general are often pretty meaningless hype - the British one seems especially nauseating - but it was still a total disgrace his omission.

Nico really could learn something from Dan about tactics and I say that as a Nico fan. Dan never figured at the front until thei last 500m of a 240km race; if Nico had been in the final group today he would have lead them in from 2km out doing all the work, suffering like a dog and being swallowed up with a few hundred metres to go.

I quite like the British Sport Personality of the year ...loved Wiggo in his blue velour suit & his drunken flirting with Sue Barker and then later him and the wife threwn down blotto in the back of a cab......we need more of this in cycling imo

I know Dan has a British sports girlfriend ...not sure who ....but if he could get his hand on a green velour suit ...he would be made :D

    Dan certainly has winners instinct.

For a supposedly top one day rider, valverde misses an awful lot of opportunities (not shedding any tears for him though).

Has he actually won any big classic since his "career break"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭Darkglasses

How much is winning the UCI ranking worth? Would Valverde have been happy to finish second, to extend his lead over the rest?

I'd say he'd have given his eye teeth to win but couldn't catch Dan ...saw him look at others to chase ...he has been on so many podiums without being on the top that he must think he is cursed

What Dan has you can't teach ...its instinct to win....

Just came to mind looking at the results as a bit of a peculiarity - top Sky rider, Kiryienka in 47th. Not brilliant.

Not sure at all ...but its now making the best of a done deal ....
If its not the Tour de France, the Tour of California , the commie games or the Olympics it seems SKY are not that pushed

He won La Flèche Wallonne and the Classica de San Sebastian this year, which are two of the most prestigious one-day races after the Monuments.

Valverde won San Sebastian Classic soon after the TDF by actually attacking from the front and riding away from the peloton !! Talented rider but too fond of wheel sucking.

Great win by Dan. Incredible acceleration after tough 260kms and looking at the names in top ten finishers.... pure class. Great support from Ryder H again. More monuments in this talented rider. Shame he lost out on LBL this year

Interesting comments from Dan after the win. He suggests he thinks he could win a grand tour in a few years time.

"If Martin was a fisherman or a hunter he’d be a specimen hunter, travelling far and wide to catch the biggest beasts. Not for him a brace of salmon nor a freezer full of wild game, he collects trophies and only the biggest: one win this year but it’s a Monument and he can add the trophy to his Liège-Bastogne-Liège silverware. He gave Valverde the kind of stuffing normally reserved for taxidermists."

    Quote - Inner Ring

    What a finishing line.
