Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Skoda Octavia estate - looked like it had a bit of spec on it with the chrome around the windows like most Superbs do plus privacy glass going on

Picked up an Ateca 1.5 TSI, switched from a leon FR that Ive had since 2015. Same horsepower, but lower torque. Can still move though!

Spotted an XC90 today, lovely machine..

Wonder if they moved from a car which had rear parking sensors? Must be gutting.

Only seen one 191 so far, a Peugeot.

Two years ago a friend of mine bought a new 171 white Skoda Superb. He was rear-ended at traffic lights the day he took delivery. 4 K to have it repaired. He traded it the following year...couldn't live with it.

I shouldn't laugh but the sister told me she saw a guy in the same colour one as that reverse into a car trying to park in Enniscorthy today.
Brand new and he got out and just walked off, never even looked to see if he'd damaged his 191 or the other car.
Some people shouldn't be allowed drive.

That would be those s**te Ford handbrakes?? ...heard a similar story on a Ford Kuga..car rolled back down a hill. Luckily, it didn't roll over someone..

I'd say it's more a case of anyone who'd buy an Ecosport being at least 80.

That's so unfortunate, hopefully the damage isn't too bad, should be repairable and definitely worth doing. Wood is fairly resilient.

Apparently her automatic handbrake failed. If she didn't hit the pole it would have hit a shop!

    Failed?

Mine failed too in a passat when they first came out.

Well I put it on wrong and it rolled ever so slowly into a gate

Forgive me for asking a stupid question here but I don't have the privilege of driving a 191 or anything close, do any of the cars here come with the remote start on the key fob to start the engine while outside the vehicle?

Yes it failed I'm not sure was the owner at fault or the car!

Work of the devil those handbrakes.
Give me the good old fashioned ones any day of the week.

a neighbour was nearly killed two years ago when her passat electric handbrake failed on an incline just as she was going to get a baby buggy out of the boot , the car rolled over her and pinned her breaking her pelvis and leg , she was lucky that they were able to save her leg . i think she still walks with a limp today , lucky to be alive .

Was reversing out of a spot in my local centra last week and another car was reversing out too. I said to my missus they have no lights on but turned out there was no one in the car and it rolled down the hill towards the main road! Luckily it hit a lamppost and stopped before it went onto the road. I assumed the electric handbrake failed bit the woman driving it said "oh **** im always doing that". ****in eejit.....

*Failed* is a very strong word guys,
I have had two cars, different models.
VW one was excellent, once it was on auto it was full auto.
In the Ford it is manually activated and can be hit and miss if you apply it properly.
I would guess it was user mistake.

The EcoSport doesn't have an electric handbrake, it has a old style levered type hand brake. You can see a similar model below with it:

    d43864c90df075c94489ddbe4ca5ffe993721808f09b5879044703457aa2bab4.jpg

And even if it had an electric handbrake there is a very small chance that it would fail on a brand new 191 car so quickly. Electric parking brakes are well tried and tested technology at this stage, yes they were problematic a few years back when the technology was in its infancy, the Passat mentioned being one prime example but I'm on my 4th car with one and none of them ever had any faults. My guess is more likely driver error where the driver doesn't check the parking brake is engaged probably because they are new to it.

I'd also point out that I'm another advocate of leaving your car parked up in gear to avoid it rolling in the event the parking brake electric or manual fails. Good practice imo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 895 ✭✭✭greendragon3

my sister in law currently has a 11' renault scenic with said handbrake and its been on the blink for a while now , the garage can't seem to find any problem with ( typical ) but when she parks for any length of time or stops and engages neutral it comes on automatically like it should but then the handbrake won't release , manually or when you put the shoe down to drive off ( its also has automatic transmission !! ) , only way to release it is to rock it forward and back a few time and knock it off and restart it a few times as well before it releases !! bit of a pain at traffic lights !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,582 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

I too question when people leave cars in neutral when parked. Secondary handbrake

Those electronic parking brakes aren’t idiot proof though, I had a Skoda Kodiaq that had been parked and locked roll out a driveway in front of me last year. Mondeo doesn’t auto engage either and with all the beeping cars do when you get out it’s easy to miss.

With the skoda ones there's an auto hold button you press. I pressed it once and that was it. If you don't press it then the car will roll.

It's a pointless button, it should be on by default but the rolling skoda was someone not setting it right or hitting it off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,477 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

They’d only just got it. You’d imagine the parking brake would come on when you turn the car off? It does on the Golf, or maybe that’s only because auto hold is on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,234 ✭✭✭darragh o meara

My missus’s uncle got a 191 Focus and only realized when he got home that it didn’t have a traditional handbrake, nor could he find it easily. He ended up having to park on the road and go back to the dealer the following morning to get a rundown on how it worked. You would think that if a salesman was handing over a car with a feature that wasn’t in the last one that they’d run through its operation with anyone buying one.

I remember my first Passat with an electric handbrake, so much I didn’t know and had to learn on the fly.. for example it took a while to figure out it would self release on a hill start etc.

I'd doubt there is much in the way of showing how things work done in a busy showroom in January. I'd say it's more a case of take keys and logbook of old car, get signature on sales forms, take payment, bring customer out to new car, handover keys, say goodbye and head back into the next customer - rinse and repeat. Customers who want time to be shown around the functions of the new car on the forecourt are usually the ones complaining about been kept waiting for their new car up to that point so I'd say it's a no win situation for dealers.

All joking aside about handbrakes, few years ago I parked on a hill when in my local swimming pool. 15 mins into my swim I was relaxing in the steam room and lifegaurd came in and goes "do you own the 06 Leon (manual handbrake), yes I replied. Its just rolled down the carpark but luckily someone was walking past and was able to hold the car from rolling further. Lifegaurd took my guys and reparked her but needless to say I didn't do bit of good. I used to never park in gear for fear of hopping in and starting up and conking forward (my old car didnt require clutch to start) I always do now.

On another note, it nearly seems a fact that as soon as you buy a new car you seem more likely to have someone bang your door in a carpark. I've never had many or any close scares when driving but yday I went to test drive a V40. Thank god the salesman was with me cuz when on dual carriageway I glanced down for a second to try the cruisecontrol when a 40 footer on the inside lane decided to just pull out and cut me up, salesman shouted woahhhhh and I jammed on the brakes.

I sound like a terrible driver but actually not!

Happened to me yesterday on M7, difference was that I was past the back of his trailer. Blew the hell out of him as he continued, after braking madly. How these morons dont know a car is there is beyond me.

Not seen a single one yet, I'd expect to see at least 5 tomorrow when people take their steeds around for a bit of getting to know you driving.

And so it happened, saw my first 191 this morning, a Peugeot 3008, looked very premium.

With automatics/hybrids etc this is not an option. I have a hybrid with a foot operated parking brake. It has hill hold for the purpose of hill starts.

Second thought, you'll not have it long doing 140+ in a 100 zone. :D

thats not fitted as a factory option in many cars, usually after market alarms do it for some reason. I think the new 5 and 7 series are the only ones I know of with it.

A lot of high end diesel cars have parking heaters that allow you to remotely turn on the heating though.
