SMUG: too pleased or satisfied about something you have achieved or something you know.

Which is word for word how he comes across to me. - 'I am funny', if you disagree then you are wrong.

Comedy is a subjective thing. Try all you want, you cannot make somebody laugh if they don't find something particularly funny in it's content or delivery.

He has some comedic talent, if a little derivative and unoriginal, as I said...but not very much in delivering it. Which is why he might be more successful at writing for somebody with a talent for delivery.

mc savage doesnt come across as too pleased or satisfied to me .

Well don't call him 'smug' so. Simple.

I think he is good actually, seen him live and though a bit hit and miss he is funny. Savage Eye was great in parts. Not your typical Irish comic, not afraid to take risks. Good on him.

Went to see D McS in the Olympia last week.

Was like watching a man having a breakdown on stage. No discernible structure to the show. Mostly ad-libbed & hid behind a guitar but didn't play any songs, just twiddled away and threw in a couple of things that came into his head.

Had seen him previously and he was great, but this was an odd performance.

I remember the days he used to do his stand up show in temple bar, I worked in town at the the and would wait to see him perform. Thought that he was pretty good. His TV show and live stand up were pretty hit and miss however.

No, I wouldn't heckle someone. I just walked out. My mates who were left behind said it was the funniest part of the show cause the fire escape door slammed behind me mad loud.

He's very much a journey man comedian who spend plenty of time on the streets just to get his name out there. You'd swear he was on 500k a year at RTE by your comment.

It's a sad cliche that happens to all "artists" who only achieve marginal success, especially Irish comedians (Blindboy from the Rubberbandits is another example).

They did a few funny things once then think they are "better" than that, and better than their audience.

    That's a good point.
Blindboy was legitimately trying to put himself forward to speak to British TV (any station) for the Irish people.
    Some absolute neck.

Why did they end the savage eye?
Ratings dropped or it ran its course?

I'm not getting into the arguments of the virtues or vices of one David McSavage. I just want to summarise his illustrious family connections, just purely out of interest.

His grandfather: Todd Andrews - active participant in War of Independence and Irish Civil War, leading supporter of Fianna Fail, former chairman of CIE and former chairman of RTE Authority.

His father: David Andrews - former Fianna Fail TD and Minister and former Chairman of The Irish Red Cross Society.

His brother: Barry Andrews - former Fianna Fail TD and Junior Minister, former Director-General of Institute of International and European Affairs, former CEO of GOAL and current Fianna Fail MEP.

His uncle: the late Niall Andrews - former Fianna Fail TD and MEP.

His cousin: Chris Andrews (son of Niall) - former Fianna Fail TD, former Sinn Fein councillor and newly elected Sinn Fein TD.

His cousin: Ryan Tubridy (his mother is an Andrews and Aunt of David) - RTE broadcaster.

    And?

As there were references to his relatives, I thought it might be useful and of interest to put it all down here. I'm not making any point at all.

Thanks for spoiling his, inevitable, appearance on that ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ show.

But the original post is about Dave Mcsavage not his family??
Why are people bringing his family into it?

Remember that short time Rubberbandits were funny... and somehow he is dining out on it since, being the "voice of a generation". I assume he runs their twitter account now? With all the **** hot takes.

He was a great man for cycling around town (Dublin) at one stage. He has a massive nose which undoubtedly helps with wind dispersion.

On the one hand, I take your point on board. On the other hand, one could argue that it is part of the David McSavage story if this were a biography of the man. Anyway, I wanted to summarise it once and for all as there were so many different references to his family in this thread. I suppose, as well, it was an opportunity to bring in a few more facts about them out of interest.

Doesn’t really like to be laughed at anymore. A very, very, serious “artiste” now.

Even dismisses his early fan base who, apparently, completely misunderstood what they were doing with their musical endeavours.

Got very deep did poor Blindboy, smothered himself in smugness and inverse snobbery, not good.

I also smell a vague hint of populist about him. Which in fairness is vital for any aspiring comedian. No one should be aspiring to hang around the International for the next 30 years. Unless you are a professional drinker, which is fine btw.

Think big, that's what Jason Byrne does....

It's a shame because some of their old stuff is gas. To be honest I didn't watch much of the Savage Eye when it was shown originally but from the few clips I've seen it does look funny.

Savage Eye had a lot of excellent material.
However he always seemed very aggressive and mean spirited abusing people in Templebar and in any interview I've seen.
I've always had my suspicions that with his family connections be most have had an easy ride, though he seems to have devoted his life to comedy, working his way up from a low level.
So I feel fairly conflicted about him.
I suppose he deserves respect for not selling out on a bland friendly guy image of the kind so many fame hungry charlatans who call themselves "comedians" do.

I think he changed his stage/public name so that he would not be immediately connected with the family name.

I first saw him when he was doing his stuff at the top of Grafton Street. Some time after that he appeared on tv, possibly as a guest on The Late Late Show. I certainly had no idea initially about his family ties, until it was mentioned by someone else, possibly on a chat show.

I think The Savage Eye is a work of genius. His stand-up material however, pales in comparison.

Met him briefly once in a pub and gave him a music CD gift and told him he should take his material to TV

Years later he took my advise

    Talented funny fellow

The gift to make ppl laugh

    I've posted about this before.

About ten/fifteen years ago I saw him busking his comedy in Temple Bar. A grop of young European students were heckling him and he started shouting and cursing uncontrollably at one of them telling him to fk off. At this point a lady stepped in, think she was a teacher or chaperone, saying he is only a child to stop. McSavage went for her, nose to nose with her screaming and cursing F*cks left right and centre. This went on for ages, and he just wouldn't back down, it was disgusting and bullying behavior I thought, pretty appalling.

So ever since then, no thanks, not for me

    LOL, he's a gas man.

What do people think of him? I don't really find him that funny, I think he's very crude and goes way over the top. He seems quite egotistical and bitter aswell. I think a comedian can be funny without having to push things as far as he does.

I'm a big fan of his. Savage Eye was excellent and a lot of his songs are very funny (esp the one about the pigeon woman). He seems to have a lot of issues, as he has admitted himself, and I probably would find it hard to warm to his real life personality, but I really enjoy his style of comedy- its a shame he hasnt had more stuff on telly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 753 ✭✭✭badboyblast

He is excellent, comedy is very subjective, his show was excellent on RTE, his depiction of a scumbag is gas.

Caught him live in Dolans doing stand up and my friends and I love him, Joe Duffy used to be freaking over his piss take of him with the leathers on savage eye.

We need to see more of him on Irish TV, man is a legend in my eyes, met him in Limerick before, gas character

McSavage’s investigation on Instagram into trying to find the Butter Nutter who is terrorising the canal benches (smearing butter and bananas on them) near Portabello is funny.

It is actually a true story.
