Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Tbh donedeal eejits does my head in more.

I'm the same, I think Adverts is grand. I especially like the feedback system and the way its easy to get extra info on the item before making an offer. When selling you just gotta learn to ignore the lowballers and swaps offers which I'd imagine are mainly from broke teenagers with more time than money.

Donedeal on the other hand I find has a lot of people setting unrealistic prices and also a lot of time wasters. I tried to give away 2 free sofas a few years back on Donedeal, I specifically stated I needed them both gone together and wasn't splitting. What do I get but some scummer showing up saying he would only take one of them. I ran him out the door but for a moment it felt dodgy, there he was inside my home arguing with me. I haven't used Donedeal since because they have no feedback system to filter out the crud and you just don't know what or who is going to show up.

    I've had good and bad.

Put 3 bedrooms and a landing and stairs worth of carpet up for free if collected. All in excellent condition, all less than a year old (the boss changed her mind.....).

Woman from Athlone asked for them. I said ok. Then she asked when can I deliver. I said they were collection only (I live in Dublin). She lost her shlt completely saying I accepted therefore it was up to me to deliver. Series of abusive messages and phone calls before she gave up. Called me every name under the sun. Complete idiot.
guy who eventually collected them however gave me a box of chocolates - only a small box of roses (prob less than €4) but it was the thought that counted.

Some amount of tyre kickers on it though.

A guy posted me a game 2 weeks ago and it never arrived until today. I got it myself brand new 1o days ago as it never arrived. I never paid him in the first place and he felt hard done by (by an post) so it arrived today and I posted it back to him with my own money. When I could have sold it to CEX for a free €40

Just thought id share that to show that there are hnlonest people on adverts. Half of the dodgey people have loads of negative feedback anyways.

One thing that winds me right up on Adverts or elsewhere is people way overvaluing their second hand stuff! Seriously some of the prices are a joke, look at anything Apple for instance. IPad 2 is an ancient tablet now and people are still looking in the hundreds for them! It's so irritating! I often have to hold back commenting on Ads because it's not really my place, but I hate to see people who know nothing about technology getting screwed! Maybe that's just me and yes it is the sellers right to sell their stuff how they want but fair is fair.

Found some great deals on it and sold a few bits.

If you set a minimum price offer and a fair price and write a proper full description title and good photo . It dramatically cuts out stupid and good questions and low offers.

Many ads are very poorly written I find
Title and description sparse and poor photo. A sparse title makes it hard to find things. Poor description and photos almost forces buyers to ask questions to figure out what the took the item actually is.

For a strange reason for selling higer ended stuff like phones and the likes I find done deal better.

Basicly any time I get a phone call I would goggle there number or look it up on Facebook Eg type it into it and find out who's profile it's link to if they look dogey you say sorry I sold the phone to them but other then that from past experiences I allway's meet people from adverts or done deal somewhere public like a coffee shop.

But on adverts now I be looking at the games on it quite a lot makeing offers what I think is the ture valve Eg go to cex see what they are giving trading in and add 5 euros to it. People just get so upset that I offer day 15 euros for a game and there like I paid 60 in gamestop and used it only once. I am like it's still 2nd hand. There like it's not only used once ......

I miss the days of the car boot sales been the places for cheap games.

I sold a laptop two years ago on done deal. I arranged to meet the guy at my local leisure centre. All went well, he was happy with the laptop and paid the agreed amount. The next day my ex went shopping and tried to pay with one of the fifties, turns out all the money was fake! Went to guards for whatever pointless reason, nothing ever came from it obviously. That's the problem with done deal. It is full of con men, no accounts and no way to find them. At least with Adverts you don't have that problem.

I would never use donedeal again.

I had an iPhone 6 up for sale and I had 2 very dodgey people contact me through the mail system and by text. They were clearly located outside of Ireland and wanted to pay like %20 MORE than my asking price. I just felt too afraid to accept their offer as they were obviously doing it to scam me and would do a complaint to paypal or something.

I often use PayPal for buying and selling on adverts and never had a problem. Depending on the persons feedback, I would send them the money without a single worry.

It's very very easy to spot this kind of crap. I'm surprised you're even admitting to contemplating the offer.

It seemed normal until a little into the conversation. Then I kind of played along to see where it went.

Point I'd that donedeal at least for me is full of dodgey people whereas I feel totally fine on adverts

I don't really get your point. You get the same messing around anywhere, be it DoneDeal or buyandsell (lol), the only difference is it's public on Adverts.

Yes except with adverts now everyone knows what you'll accept which is annoying. You can't ask for €500 again.

I'm pretty sure if you accept an offer and then cancel it that post disappears and the amount you accepted isn't public any more, but I could be wrong on that.

If someone says to you 'will you ship to me outside of Ireland and I'll pay it by paypal' its like, 99% certain its a scam.

    I like it.

I like that you can get the haggling and nonsense out of the way beforehand and that there is transparency regarding the persons history etc..

Not really. On done deal you're not going to remove an ad unless you've sold the item. Anyone who looks at it wont know if there's been interest or not and so can make up their own mind upon inspection.

The ability to withdraw an offer on adverts places doubt in the minds of other potential bidders.

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that.

Same guy also offered another person the swap of an old sofa for a Gaming PC priced at over 1k.

He also asked a load of people to swap their laptop for his old broken one which needs repairs.

I remember one of the big sellers on adverts was offered a ridiculous swap for his high-end gaming PC, your classic 'swap my ads' - an old xbox, battered laptop, 10 year old PC, tin of baked bins, etc.

Gets turned down and takes it extremely personally, posting messages all over the guy ad like 'THIS IS AN OVERPRICED HEAP OF SCRAP'.

In the end he ended up threatening to kill the seller.

The thing is, you can get decent swap deals on adverts if you're realistic. I swapped my iMac for a gaming PC a few years back because I just couldn't get on with the move from Windows to Mac. It was a good deal that suited both of us.

That said, I've an Nvidia Shield Tablet with all the trimmings up for swap on adverts at the moment and have only been offered trash.

My only problem with Adverts are the tyre-kickers and the amount of overpriced tat in some sections. However, it's 100% better than Done Deal and it's a safe place to trade as the feedback system allows you to avoid 'most' of the oddballs and con artists.

Recently I put up an ad for a Moët Vintage 2006 display box. I marked it very clearly as such, with text in the title and body. Mentioned box only, bottle not included. The amount of people who thought I was giving away a free bottle of champagne, and tried to rip the hand off me? The mind boggles

    That bottle still going?

Years ago somebody gave me a bad rating entirely because I gave them a bad rating (they didn't show up and just wasted my time). I contacted Adverts and they obviously looked at my record, saw it was genuine and removed that negative rating. (I suspect they also can read the email PM exchanges and could see he was in the wrong). That sort of judgement call was appreciated.

You've been lucky so. Around 2009 or so I had the same issue. Left a negative feedback to someone who was dick1ing me around for a week. He obviously left a negative feedback to me. Contacted adverts straight away, instead of removing this negative from my account a mod was just acting like Matt Flanders from the Simpsons, giving his hippie okaley dokaley deedly doodley type of responses basically forcing me and the time waster to change our negative feedbacks from negative to neutral. That user was gone off adverts a few months later, perhaps that eejit mod too, but my account still holds that neutral feedback.

Aren't you amazing. I expected if someone is collecting a large piece of furniture he wouldn't turn up in a micra.

I've had it 2 minutes after replying to a comment on an ad where no offers were even made. Fair enough if the ad looks like it's sold or there is an accepted offer but on every other ad why not just ask your question or make an offer?

I'm finding adverts.ie is notorious for these types. This happened today with someone offering €220 for an item I'm trying to sell on for €230, as well as offering to swap for a similar item as an alternative. Declined the swap offer but said I'd accept the €220. The guy withdrew saying it was too expensive.

Earlier on in the year someone else seemingly expressed interest by querying about the receipt and condition of the item which was specified in the advert. He never replied again when I let him know the details.

    Yeah.

The problem is that you can 'commit to buy' from a seller but without actually making any real commitment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Captain Flaps

Meh, if someone 'commits' as in makes an offer which I accept and it seems like they never had any intention to buy, I'll leave them poor feedback. It's only happened once or twice but I think that's fair.

There are an awful lot of ads that the sellers just don't respond to as well, so the first question to ask is if the item is still available for sale, no point in asking any other questions if it is not 'still available'.

This was my most recent enquiry.

    http://www.adverts.ie/hard-drives/ssd-480gb-sandisk-2-5/9956419

No response to queries and then withdrawn after I asked the important question. Picked one up on ebay in the meantime though.

I think some sellers dont update their adds to show the item as sold as marking the add as sold triggers the Adverts fee to kick in.

Nail on the head there. Many people are just too tight to pay the €1 or €2 success fee. Adverts need to address this because its obviously losing them money and frustrating buyers. With ebay you pay your auction fees up front and then if it doesn't sell you apply for a refund. Might be a better way for Adverts to go to help cut out the withdrawn ads.

What about the ones who relist the ad and go missing? What would be their logic? Building anticipation? Waiting for crowds throwing offers at them?

I've had a heap of stupid comments on both adverts and Facebook.

Sell something for 950, get responses "would u take 550/600 cash tonight" ... Then turn into smart arses when you say no?

The stupidity of them astounds me sometimes to be honest. You do get the occasional good seller/buyer and they tend to be repeats as well which is always good.

I'm not sure the quoted user has ever sold anything on ebay... You list your item and when ebay processes the payment they take their cut.

Also, you do occasionally come across gold like this: http://www.adverts.ie/other-home-garden/the-lord-s-prayer/10215813

I have a car advertised on adverts at the min. I am in Kildare. Car is a cheap run around for €500, with NCT and tax. Advertised as no swaps and no offers below asking price.

Comments section is full of exactly that.

"Offer you €350 cash today, I am coming from Dublin"

Like I care a less where you are coming from.
