Also slightly chuffed with myself. I did something I’d never normally do, went into a garden centre and picked up a collection of plants without researching them for a winter pot display. It reminds me of people who buy puppies without considering their adult size and needs beforehand 😂

Anyways low and behold Adam had the same fern/cyclamen arrangement. I also threw in a calocephalus brownii (cushion bush) and a Japanese spindle for good measure. I’m thinking Pomeranian size and I’ll probably end up with Irish Wolfhound size in my pot :pac:

Rarely go on Facebook but any time I’ve logged on of late, Monty keeps showing as a friend suggestion. Think he must be stalking me :D

I really enjoyed seeing that garden with that beautiful collection of Acers last night. What stunning Autumn colour!
I also enjoyed watching Monty planting some Autumn fruiting raspberries. I have just picked a nice bowl of my own Autumn Bliss berries for the breakfast this morning and I can wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who would like to have raspberries lasting well into the middle of Autumn. In fact this year there has been a bumper crop of them here. I got a far better return out of them compared to my summer fruiting variety although I do think that a family of blackbirds here in the garden had something to do with those reduced returns also.

Friday’s with Monty are getting short again, I’d imagine only 3 or 4 episodes left?

He mentioned last week that it’s time to plant bulbs except for tulips, which you should leave til later in Nov/Dec? Any ideas why the wait? I was planning on getting them planted this weekend when it’s dry if there’s no harm?

Tulips are susceptible to fungal disease, e.g.. 'tulip fire', if planted when the weather is too mild, better to leave it later when it's colder. They are usually planted later than you would plant daffs.

Thanks Live at Three, Oh well :( can’t be helped now, hopefully they’ll be okay!

Thumbs up from me for Autumn Raspberries, especially good crop this year. Larger berries and much longer fruiting time and the birds dont seem to be aware of them! They started in July and will keep going til frosty weather. The dry sunny weather earlier this year made for a poor summer crop. I read somewhere not to cut the canes down til Spring, I usually cut once fruit is done as the summer ones being mindful to leave new branches of those for next year's fruit.
The Autumn variety fruit on new growth of the same year.

Monty said he'll see us again in springtime!

    :^)-/-=

I was fully convinced that Monty was going to announce tonight that he wouldn’t be with us next year.

But he’s coming back in the spring!! 😭 😀

Tears of joy! Something to look forward to !

Such a brilliant programme. A must watch for me

On a completely different tack, Frances visited the magnificent Winkworth Arboretum (and gave a very informative explanation about autumn foliage) but could anyone help me identify the music that accompanied that part of the episode.

    Thanks in advance!

Hopefully not just a rehash of all the viewers lockdown videos, it got a bit repetitive during the regular season

Following Monty on Instagram is a treat, too

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit of a rehash tbh.

Have to agree with you, I have them growing for the past few years, they usually fruit for me from September to Halloween, depending on how wet the late autumn is. The trick seems to be to harvest the ripe berries regularly to encourage the plant to continue producing.

That’s a good idea. Would be good to show some things to do in winter, although minimal, there still can be some things to do

I’m distracted by Monty’s dogs every week ... they are gorgeous! It’s a great TV programme even for a novice like me.

That’s some transformation in the Leeds garden, just shows what can be done with a little imagination. Wouldn’t have the patience for all that watering though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,142 ✭✭✭OldRio

Dissapointed with that advice by Joe Swift in regard to the no dig bed. There is absolutely no need to leave that bed empty. It can be planted straight away.

Hands down my favorite episode last year was the visit to Dave Guolson’s garden (professor of biological science and bee expert). So nice to see it repeated because I think his message is so important!

His study in Germany that there has been a 75% drop in flying insects in 26years stopped me in my tracks last year. What kind of world will our children have in another 26 years???.....I can’t even bear to think about it!

And his message for us is so simple..leave a patch of unmown lawn, and don’t spray pesticides, it’s literally that simple to make a difference.....!

Rant over :pac::pac: next note to self, I must invest in some helibores to plug winter/spring gap, loved them in tonight’s show.

i thought they'd have helicoptered a camera crew in for the occasion so monty could have done his wise avuncular routine. and then back to the begonias.

and all mention of digging deep holes edited out of it.

They normally repeat it early on a Sunday morning followed later on by a repeat of Beechgrove.

I'm sure it will get shown on a prime time slot when the BBC regains its senses. (Almost universal anger on twitter in regard to its postponement.)

God rest him, he was an expert digger of holes it would have been a fitting tribute!

Sure I suppose how could it be any other way, the world doesn’t revolve around Monty even though I do think so myself :pac:

I’ve found Gardening with Carol Klein on channel 5 +1 (on now if anyone’s interested!) not too bad an evening’s substitute I hope!

I see Monty is moving his alliums this week (what I wouldn’t do for his display!), I was chewing over whether I should move some in my own garden, I planted some last year in the main border and had some to spare which I did the ‘throw and grow’ method for a bit of interest. Low and behold the main border has gaps and the ‘throw and grow’ came through! The gaps are getting the better of me and I wasn’t sure about moving the spares but if Monty can do it I’ll give it a go too :pac::pac:

Loved Arit’s feature tonight about peat bogs. Never knew that they held twice the amount of carbon as the world’s forests. The bogs have decreased by 94% in the last 2 centuries in the UK  No wonder Monty has always emphasized ‘peat free’ compost!

Sent the OH out for compost the last day and he landed back with ’Bord na Mona’ compost. Looking at the bags very guiltily now!

The conservation of bogs here in Ireland is so controversial! Cutting turf runs in our veins, here in the NW anyways :pac: ! My father worked in a peat burning station.... I burn it myself, although through gritted teeth. As I place the sods in the hearth I think about my sons and their future. I’d love to be able to afford an alternative...! Not many here in the NW agree with stopping the turf harvest and I do understand that point of view but personally I wish we could move forward!

Anyways back to the gardening! Why hasn’t peat compost been banned yet?

Edit: peatlands cover less than 3% of the world’s surface, they contain 30% of the carbon in our soil worldwide. Damaged peatland release an awful lot of their stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Peatlands are well worth saving I think!

Lidls had a 'low peat compost when I was in there on Thursday, I think the message is starting to get through.

Just catching up on tonight’s episode. Splitting my sides laughing at comedian Susan Calman’s comment that having Adam Frost’s number is like having the number for Beyoncé :pac::pac::pac: I’m with you there Susan!

Loved Nick’s section on his wildlife pond. I was struggling for suggestions for the outer edges of my own pond, he’s planted Liguria dentata Leopard plant and driopteris Felix mas, must give that a go!
