Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I picked up an Aldi perfume last week as a gift from my son to his granny for Mother's day. I sniffed it in the shop, thought it was nice enough and popped it in the trolley.
Just before I dropped it over to her yesterday I sprayed it onto my hand and once it had settled it smelt absolutely gorgeous! Now I want to head into Aldi after work to buy a bottle for myself!! It's the freesia and pear one.

Jo Malone do a nice English Pear & Freesia, which is probably what Aldi were working off. Similarly, Lidl do Suddenly Diamonds, which is a bang on dupe for my almost signature Boss Orange.

I got myself a box of Butler's mini Easter eggs today as a present for when after baby's born (gestational diabetes, grrr)

I buy the best presents for everyone, including myself.

Aaah! Went into Aldi this evening and no perfumes left. Hardly surprising though. But I did pick up the scent in a hand wash ( as well as a few other things I didn’t need) so it wasn’t a wasted trip.

I'm a week into the new job now, and it feels like:
    1) I belong there
    2) That I can actually go far

While I still have another 4 weeks of training to do, I'm already enjoying the role, and am weirdly more than happy to head to work in the snow in the morning.

Haven't felt like this in a while :)

One particular person at work just rubs me up the wrong way - did it again this morning. You teach 5 less hours than I do, the main part of your role (i.e. writing assessments) has been made way easier by the fact that we are using pre made papers so all she has to do is pick the paper and put it in for photocopying. So we share two year 11 classes (exam groups), she marked one classes papers (the kids do three papers each) and I marked the other (the longer one). This morning she has the cheek to ask me for the papers so that she can do some improvement time stuff with the students today because she has people in her lesson supporting - i.e. she can get on with something else and so the students can do some improvement work in her book.

I hate the fact the students have done 5 mocks now - she is being reactive rather than proactive. Yes give them time to do their corrections and learn from their mistakes, but move on.

    So she can fe*k off!!

Great start to Monday morning :D

Walk up to the bus stop. All paths clear bar one, compacted I’ve and uphill. Slows me down just enough that the bus sails past. 20 minutes wait to the next one.

I’ll still be like 40 minutes early, but it’s cold out here.

I booked in to a hotel for the night for some r&r.

Sitting in the bar with my book. Look up. See a rep that I deal with in work.

    There’s no escape!!!!!

Nothing worse - I know the feeling. I went into town after work to collect my dollars, and decided I fancied a sneaky McDonalds. As soon as I saw a few students in there, I bolted

Aye. I haven’t been to a shopping centre without bumping into a student. It’s negative craic.

Although one of my students informed me that she saw one of my colleagues shopping in the chemist that she works in. I told colleague in a “by the way” and she was morto because she was buying stuff you wouldn’t want students to see you buying!!!!!

Anyone know if I can block calls/video calls from people on facebook without blocking them from sending me messages?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,263 ✭✭✭robyntmorton

RQ - On desktop there is an option to turn off voice/video calls. Can't see an option in the app on iPhone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,263 ✭✭✭robyntmorton

Been away from boards for a bit due to work and life. Currently have 57 notifications, but can't be bothered going through them. Cut my losses and just mark everything read, or slowly dig through them while letting more build up?

On the other hand, I no longer feel the need to check boards every few hours to see what's happening, so maybe that's good.

Can anyone recommend a Dublin City centre restaurant for dinner for a group of 6 ladies to celebrate a 40th birthday.
We don't want Michelin star fanciness, but don't mind paying for quality.
Would like somewhere we can go for drinks nearby that caters for our age group.

    Any particular genres of food?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,812 ✭✭✭Addle

I'd say plain, safe food. Spuds and steak kind of thing.
    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

Somewhere like Chez Max or Darwin’s might be a good shout. Not too pricy but good food. Decent atmosphere and central for drinks after - hogans, idlewild, long stand.

    Great, thanks.
    I'll check them out.

Mad question (but anyone who knows me knows I’m mad)

I’m bringing my parents to Spain next month (my dad has had health problems and could do with a break)

Last week I saw cheap flights to Bangkok (damn you bargain alerts) and came THIS CLOSE to pulling the trigger for May. I’m still tempted.

So, do I wait to get one holiday out of the way first, or do I book it?

Also, Bangkok, solo? Am I insane?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,176 ✭✭✭✭sammyjo90

Book it. They wont be cheap next time.

Although I know nothing about how safe Bangkok is...
Can always find someone after the fact!

    Very nice of you!

No more insane than normal. If you feel comfortable solo travelling, I don’t see why you’d be concerned. However, perhaps speak to someone who has been previously as to how safe it might or might not be. I have only heard good things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

Oh - just check the weather forecast. there’s usually a reason that flights are cheap. Make sure it’s not typhoon season!

Rainy season starts in May, but monsoon season doesn’t really kick in for a little bit after that.

Also the cheap flights from bargain alerts have gone, but I’m kinda checking Skyscanner and Kayak daily to see what comes up.

Also, solo travel doesn’t bother me, but this would be the first time I’ve gone so far solo.

Major facepalm moment in work today. Follow up to do while I’m on leave, or do it before event I’m following up happens.

    Yeah, bring on this holiday.

Hoping someone here will be able give me a recommendation.
I'm afraid to ask this question in the tea and coffee forum!

I don't drink coffee anymore, and when I did, I wasn't fussy about it.
I always have a jar of instant in the house for visitors. I don't have a coffee machine.

Can anyone recommend something handy and decent to have in the house for visitors? Everyone seems to be do well up on their coffees now, I feel a bit of a failure with my Nescafé gold!

    Nescafé Azerra
    Kenco milicano
    Gold Blend Crema

Depends on what you want in a coffee. I drink all of them, depending what is on offer when I’m shopping.

Nescafe Azera is by far the best instant out there, and go for the Intenso if you're aiming for something that suits everyone.

I had a major facepalm moment in work too... I intended to forward an email to my friend in work saying "[Colleague] is being a moanbag"

I actually sent it back to the colleague I was talking about

To be fair he was being quite unreasonable, and I could have said a lot worse than 'moanbag', but it's still embarrassing :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,812 ✭✭✭Addle

    Will he complain?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

I remember being at the end of an email like that.

We were at lunch and all chatting. There was general back and forward between a group of us, and when we got back to the office I had an email from someone having a good old bitch about something I had said during the back and forth. I can’t even remember what it was about. But I went to the sender to ask if she had a problem/had I done anything wrong etc and she said no, no problems, I hadn’t done anything wrong etc, so I told her she had sent the email to me instead of our colleague and she went puce and started to stammer.

It said worse things than moanbag though!!

I had a goody bag put on my desk at work today, as one of the managers liked my development plan for this year. It had prosecco and whisky in it. I like work goody bags :)

I also applied to become a fire marshal today, and have a meeting with another manager tomorrow to research a promotion. Next step after that is to actually get a promotion.

    It seems January's aren't all bad :)

I'm having a week where everything seems to be going right for me. I have an aptitude test for a potential promotion tomorrow. I finally got cleared by my psychiatrists on Wednesday, and feel like I just don't want this good streak to end. Long may it last :)
