Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Presuming the defence forces are training here again? Helicopter circling the town, a number of their vehicles and personal. You can hear gunshots too. Sounds are coming from the north of the town.

I heard shots or what sounded like fireworks next door to my work place as few minutes ago.

    Nope, near Harvey's VW.

Kind of hard to tell if it was bangers or gunfire

Are they a franchise or is it just a once off diner set up by someone local?

Once off I believe. There’s no other takeaways or restaurants with that name

Fair play to them taking a leap with a new venture in these times. Strange to see two new pizza outlets open on the same street in Thurles in the midst of a Pandemic but I'm sure they've both done their homework. That's a crazy amount of take away/Diner's Thurles now has serving a population of approx 9,000.

On a side note, doesn't look like Subway will be opening back up. There's a to let sign in the window the past couple of months after replacing the "Subway will reopen under new management" notice.

If you want your story to get out there through this, it won't. It's a wall of text in a random thurles thread. I read a bit of it, and take it you have an issue with a neighbour. Is this a thurles issue? Perhaps you should take this to personal issues.

From the unit out on Friar Street? They didn’t last too long there. You’d wonder what the thinking behind it is. I can see the advantage of the Parnell street car park but would it be really worth the hassle of terminating a lease and fitting out a unit again.

Does anyone know how much longer the road works will last at the new Lidl site?

    It's March I believe
    Edit:

    From AA Roadwatch:
TIPPERARY: Until Fri 19th March, works and a stop/go system will be in place on the N62 Slievenamon Rd in Thurles between the Monadreen Rd and Davis Rd jcts. Lane closures will also be in place to facilitate these works

Is the new business centre being built straight away after Lidl ?

Also , any word if McDonalds got planning or not ?

The current premises where they are isn't exactly "above board" lease wise. That building is as dodgy as it comes. The huge ESB bills left there over the years. I say any lease there is paid in cash monthly on rolling terms and that's about it.

Many crowds (Indian Restaurants) have went in and out of that building over a number of years.

McDonalds did not apply for planning.

Baycross Developments Limited applied for permission for a drive thru / fast food restaurant last May.

Once permission is granted. They will then approach tenants for the building.

And that may never happen as guess what company Baycross Developments is a subsidiary of?

The man behind the big casino out in Two Mile Borris, Dr Quirkey.... So nothing is going to happen in a hurry! Was it about 10 years ago when the first application for a supermarket at the Erin Foods site went in by Baycross? So that tell's you all you need to know.

Only for Lidl is the new tenant, they still wouldn't be a sod turned. They don't wait around, classic Germans.

    Proposed restaurant:

That Supermarket was granted planning permission (minus the Drive thru) by Thurles Town Council. The traders in the square appealed to An Bord Pleanala who shot down the application. Quirke’s eldest son who is behind it now. It was recently granted a 3 month extension to provide further information to Tipperary County Council because of Covid-19. McDonald's restaurants are gold mines and post covid bring in a lot of footfall to the town. I don’t consume fast food myself, but I do consume their coffee, decent coffee, very reasonable.

There’s “hope” yet. Still listed on Subway.ie as a restaurant. The recent case in the court (Subway bread is confectionery VAT) might have scared away a lot of slimmer/health conscious consumers.

i dont think health conscious people eat subway anyway. even unhealthy eaters like myself who would regularly eat deli crap food would consider subway to be terrible food

Peeked in to Subway the other day. New dark black tiles laid on the floor. The type of tiled flooring you’d see in a hairdressers. The AC unit removed from the ceiling, bin storage area knocked down etc would suggest it isn’t reopening. Black tiles doesn’t fit in with the modern Subway decor.

I think everyone is glad that the square is being worked on now. The traffic isn't all that bad since the schools are off. God only knows what it would be like during normal times although the traffic queues at the new Lidl site are incredibly reminiscent of when that stretch of road was being resurfaced back in 2018.

I witnessed a severe case of road rage at those traffic lights recently. One driver in the middle of the queue was oblivious to the fact that the light had gone green and all the cars ahead of him/her were gone and sat there far too long which led to the lights going red again and everyone behind him stuck again.

Kind of understandable but people need to have their wits about them and get moving. It's not nice to be stuck at the lights for 2/3 goes because someone is in a world of their own.

Anyone else notice the absolute and utter state of the road from the roundabout near the Anner down to the bridge? I know Jim Ryan said that this is going to be resurfaced at some stage but my God it needs to be done soon.

Oh it’s beyond bad , same outside the cop shop .

The roads in general are terrible around the town at the minute . In saying that , I know we always give out about the town but there does seem to be good development and plans about the place at the moment, for once

    The square rejuvenation
    Thurles market quarter
    Jigsaw youth health centre
Primary health care clinic Mitchel street
    Lidl and drive thru restaurant
    Thurles business centre
Planning permission applied for a couple of estates too
    Talks of GAA museum

Now I have no doubt those things will be shot down by some on here and a few of them might never come to fruition but it’s a hell of a lot more than some towns around Tipp and the country have planned .

It’s very easy constantly talk down and complain about your own place , and it’s not just a Thurles thing , it’s actually a really Irish thing .

There’s a thousand things that could be better but there’s worse places to be

I for one cannot wait for a sunny day on the square on the day of a Munster final sipping an ice cold bottle ☺️

That’s the N75 which comes under the remit of Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Because it’s a National secondary road, they won’t be in too much of a hurry to resurface it. They’ve even started to use chippings and watered down tar on parts of the N62, that how bad things have gotten in this country.

Subway is getting a red coat of paint. My first guess is Apache Pizza relocation, especially because the Middle Eastern guy who looks like he’s project managing.

Second guess is Bar One racing. Whilst we are in level 5 lockdown, one recently “opened” in Clonmel. The late opening hours recently granted could apply to a betting offices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,854 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

The last thing we need is yet another betting office. Poor aul Charlie Mooney will be over and back to this one from Boyles like a blue-arsed fly! :pac:

I reckon you’re spot on with Apache. Was thinking the same thing myself when I saw the red paint go on the building.

Yep well done on the Apache prediction!

The new one is called Apache cafe and the old one just Apache pizza , must be a seating area or something in the one on the square unlike the current one

I see planning is re submitted for the housing estate up at Mitchel street / Bohernamona rd . Not sure what the problems were with the first application but good to see it hasn’t been shelved .

Houses badly needed around the town

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,921 ✭✭✭Grab All Association

I’ve just been thinking about Subway and Apache Cafe.

So we enter the first lockdown and the franchisee of Subway decides not to reopen. A planning application is submitted to Thurles Municipal District saying that the business is unviable unless the opening hours are extended to 12am. A poster appears in the window saying reopening the 27th June, later replaced with a poster saying the 27th of July. It doesn’t reopen and later a To Let sign goes in the window, despite the letting not listed online (I looked for over two months to find it) Now Apache Pizza opens.

Had people and traders in thurles known subway was not reopening, I’m sure there would have been objections submitted to later opening hours. A pizzeria would attract a different type of customer in the late evenings than a sandwich shop. The kind of customers that piss up against shop fronts.

    What do you think?

    Badly needed is right!

Has anyone else noticed the lack of hangers-about along the river behind Dunnes? There was a time you couldn't walk down there without coming across a few groups of gougers along with the winos and I'm not talking about Presentation students!

Have they all moved to the new park? I know a number of people who won't go through the park because of them.

I think it's going to be slow going to get to Ladies Well. €60,000 to extend the cycle/walkway by the length of a field seems excessive to me.
Unless there's an insurance cost as part of that figure maybe.

Where was this announced? Can’t find any info about it and you’d usually expect some of the politicians to be taking credit for it.

It's the Lions Club that the funding has been allocated to, the link is for Jim Ryan's Facebook post.
I thought it had stated €60,000 originally but the figure in the article now reads €120,000

Thanks for that. I don't have a facebook account so I missed it. Will be interesting to see how its managed at the back of the Willows. The wall dropping down from the willows is right up to the water so not a whole pile of room to develop a walkway & cycleway unless its an elevated boardwalk type structure.

More good news this morning re funding announced for a new market quarter. Would be a great addition.
