Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yea it's a bit annoying. My thinking is if it shipped from UK it would be here quicker. 2 days now and it still hasn't left France.

Well my XG438Q finally arrived but the no free lunch is BGR subpixel ordering. It is fairly distracting and like the reviewer said you can only do so much with ClearType Tuner.

So my solution is buying one of these so I can flip the display 180 degrees and get RGB ordering.

Aaaand the arm didn't work despite being in spec. Also discovered a dead pixel. RMA time. I don't think I'll get another one of these screens though, image quality really poor for text and the VA smearing is a tad too strong. Back to the monitor drawing board.

Personally i think all those ROG monitors are overhyped. You can get much better displays for cheaper.

I think this one in particular was a bad move. First display of its kind in that class (large size, 4K, high refresh). At the same time, displays like the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q get glowing reviews across the board.

Just received a LGA2011 mounting kit from Noctua for a cooler I purchased in 2011 for free...not that's how you do customer support.

There's certainly an extra cost to the consumer for having the Asus name on a product compared to similar products on the market.

VR is one of those things I want to like, but it just takes up too much space & money.

I think you'd be surprised, You can barely swing a cat in my sitting room, my playable space was about meter wide by a meter once and a half once I put the guide lines down. I was on the Oculous quest and honestly even with a small room its phenomenal in terms of space. apparently watching me playing Beat saber is hilarious :pac:.

There's a bunch of really great seated VR experiences. Land's End and Virtual Virtual Reality are great.

I am totally the same with a VIVE....cool at first but nothing there to keep me using it. Sold that before the massive price cuts.

VR is great for sim racing and aircraft sims, I have mine for that, not really arsed with anything outside of that. Waiting for a headset to arrive with much improved resolution so I can upgrade from my Rift.

At a reasonable price I might add, the vive's and index etc are too much for me for infrequent usage.

Lone Echo was exceptional imo, VR needs a few more games like that.

Any tid-bits on 3000 series from NVIDIA?

I've been flip-flopping on a 3700x/2070S build, but NVIDIA's whole line-up is just so **** at the moment, I'm also trying to wait it out until a (hopefully) better value 3000 shows up. I haven't heard a peep though, which makes me think it's at least six months out.

    Thoughts?

    2070 Super released in July, and it's a barely cut-down 2080 for €550 vs the old card's €700+.
And I'm happy to report the Founder's Edition is a good cooler.

RX 5700 XT can match it in only a few workloads, so unless they release a better card at Xmas, Nvidia have no reason to refresh again.

You're probably better off you buy now rather than waiting. It'll be next year before the 3000 stuff comes out at least I'd reckon.

Very very popular (good value) and a smaller fab right? Low stocks is a great sign.

Maybe go for a 3700X/5700 build in order to wait.

What is it about fan control and asus boards being so bad. Turn on your computer it sounds like a 747 getting ready to take off.

I can't seem to maintain consistency with my fans, there either all or nothing any one else have this problem?

Is there a Tuning option in the BIOS you can run?

Yeah I had this complaint. There's a "ramp-up" time option in the BIOS for Maximum XI, but it was broken for a long time. I think the latest BIOS might have fixed it. I moved to Argus Monitor a while back for fans and never looked back, I recommend it highly.

Gone all out team red in my new build. Ordered today, hopefully will arrive before the of the week
    3700X
    Powercolor 5700XT Dual Fan OC
Corsair DDR4 Vengeance RGB PRO Black 3600mhz 2x8gb
    MSI B450M Mortar Max
    CoolerMaster MasterBox NR400
    Antec Neoeco 650W

Hopefully it should look small, clean and neat. Think its the first time in about 10 years I've not just upgraded, but built all from scratch (minus SSDs)

Just got the ViewSonic VP3268-4K delivered from CCL and it came out the box with 5 dead pixels, a tiny bit of dust behind some 3 or 4 other pixels and a mysterious mini-DP cable with what looks like some paint scrapings and old paper sticker markings. Pretty sure they just sent me someone else's RMA.

My 5700 XT is better than my old Vega 56. Playing GTA V this evening and it was rock solid 60fps at 4K. I'd say it would do more than 60fps if you tweaked settings and had a screen that displayed more than 60. IT wouldn't 144Hz at 4k but I'd say you would get 70's even high 70's.

Just be sure to install the newest 19.9.2 Radeon driver. The main issue I've had thus far were BSODs if you didn't disable hardware acceleration in Firefox, Steam & Discord. The odd crash with the Radeon overlay turned on too. 19.9.2 has totally solved all of that now though.

I came from a GTX 1070 and the performance uplift is really nice. The 1070 on some of the reasonably modern titles would be down around 45-50fps, but now I'm easily at 60+ on ultra everywhere I've tried thus far. I game at 1440p though.

Which 5700XT did you go for?

How close to it are you sitting? 4K pixels are tiny on a screen that size

Close enough to see the pixels. ViewSonic offer zero defective pixels on VP series monitors so no way I'm accepting it. Also a black cluster is much worse.

I went for the reference model. It's not as loud as reviewers make out. But you can hear it I suppose when gaming if you were to sit there listening for it but I don't hear it as I wear headphones. It's still no where near as loud as a 290 I had a few years ago.

Are you going to do a washer mod/thermal paste application though?
Would improve thermals a fair bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I replaced the thermal paste. From looking at it from my eye anyway it didn't look like it needed the washers.

I don't seem to have a great overclocking 5700 XT on the core that is. It seems decent on Memory well kind decent a bit above average but bad on core. That German guy from Igorslab can hit 2200MHz no problem, mine can't, ah well.

I use morepowertool which is the same thing as power play tables but in a more user friendly gui.

Maybe the morepowertool is not working right. I will try to mod the power play tables the old way and see if it is any different later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

As I suspected the Power play table mods return the same out come on my card as the morepowertool did. No good at overclocking on the core.

But one thing about my card is without any tools or editing reg files just overclocking out of the box it returns the below score. Graphics score that is. I was just testing graphics so CPU is just a mild overclock that I use everyday.

    https://www.3dmark.com/spy/8569095

That's a 9549 graphics score right out of the box which is pretty darn good.

I just remembered after typing that out that there is one mod done and can't be bothered to type out a different bit of text. I replaced the pad with paste. No special paste just paste I have that I bought 10 years ago.

You're still rocking an X58 system in 2019?

It's surely a bit of a bottleneck for the 5700 XT now? Probably not so much at 4K though.
