Dont panic, the technology is there, even Bill knows that. Cue his new book next year - https://eu.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2019/10/03/bill-gates-book-fighting-climate-change-coming-next-june/3850451002/

Its just that the multi billionaire investors in green tech for zero carbon would like some investment from the plebs, while their petroleum invested pals would like to throttle out the last of the wealth available on their products and get a premium.

Gates says he will stump up 300 million or so of the green tech investment needed. His good mate Bezos makes that in 1 day. Bill cannot be far behind. Honestly, wake up and smell the oligarcha making coffee.

Poll on The Journal this morning - Do you welcome an increase in the Carbon Tax? 67.6% have replied No,not at all.

Any increase today will come back to bite the government in the arse come election time, mark my words. The majority do not care about this nonsense.

In fairness The Journal is basically a right wing nazi fanzine if the commenters are anything to go on. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t believe in climate change in real life and tis far from D4 I was reared.

Call The journal what you want, but that poll is a pretty accurate picture of majority public sentiment towards this nonsense - the people voting Yes can't even make up 50% of the No vote. Just wait until the next election rolls around - they are dead men walking now after this carbon tax bull****.

They are intentionally keeping the protest details secret presumably to make most impact

Although I do support them like I said yest morning don’t p1ss off joe public on public transport

Seems a little bit contradictory to their aims. As has already been pointed out the public disobedience and "highlighting" is their aim but just like when it came to brexit champagne socialists inconveniencing and looking down on common man wont really fly.
Private jets should be taxed out of existence if I had my way

I don't think the big plane manufacturers would take that too well, you can see the power the influence with the recent tariffs from the US on European products just to sanctions on the US plane makers due to safety concerns.

Additionally if you consider a private plane to be a luxury then where does that put family holidays ect?

Thankfully it’s confined to Dublin and the rest of us can continue living a normal life. It will be over in a few days, nothing will be achieved bar cementing in the minds of even more people that anyone talking about climate issue is a complete fruitcake and to be ignored.

It won’t be just Dublin if everyone paying an extra tax on it tho

I wouldn’t trust any Irish gov to use the money correctly myself either

Maybe so but people don't like paying taxes and when you have no carrot to offer with the stick your putting on them your in trouble.

Consider most of the poorer people (elderly and social welfare) who cannot afford to retrofit their houses to bring them in line with more sustainable heating supplies have to use solid fuels you can see why people are against it.

I don't think they are done yet, if brexit comes in an is extreme they may be seen as prudent. The real risk is that this budget and general election will rehabilitate Fianna Fail and the greens as people look for alternatives to the current shower.

FF and Michael Martin were adamant a carbon tax had to happen,

    They are all the same.

I think we both know the Greens will never ever ever be in government again here, people don't get amnesia over what they did the last time & the green wave of the recent locals is nothing but a ripple in a big pond.

I disagree. There’s a strong likelihood that they’ll form part of the next government. Perfect excuse to raise taxes by the main party, and when re-election comes around they will be cast aside.

History has a habit of repeating itself.

Its not so much having a carbon tax, i think we should have one that punishes bad behavior but also incentives for those who follow good behavior.

I live in a rural area that has become a hot spot for dumping. People when pushed to it will come up with creative and alternative ways to survive. Id say it will open up a wider market for the black economy.

We don't know that, i personally don't like the greens but the recent plans proposed by the government the voice that made most sense on it was Eamon Ryan. I think they understand that green policies used to increase more taxes on their own are bad but combining them with stuff that reenforces good behavior is the way to go.

I think the big challenge for the government is going to be that all tax increases come in to effect tonight and everything else is pushed back to next year.

We're right on a track for FF being in gov again, amnesia indeed.

They are a party, like Labour, who are open to government. The attraction of both is the instant block of votes they bring to a negotiation. In the Greens' case it depends on how many seats they can get but Labour will always be considered a more reliable partner for FF & FG.

Apparently the woman on the bike has no future her future is gone.

Carbon taxes will only go one way over the next 5 decades. Regardless of which major party gets in. That’s the new normal.

No it's not, as I said earlier just wait until the MAJORITY have their say in the next election. No majority support = no continuation of climate or carbon taxes.

And none of the Carbon tax will go towards the environment!!!

It won't change the majority of people habits, as they can't afford a electric car or solar power heating!!

Refer to what happened the water charges if you need a clearer picture of what will occur when they push these ridiculous taxes further up. The majority will not accept being fleeced for this nonsense, doesn't matter what you think or want.

It won't go away but on its own won't help the environment, if you think grand sure accepting the carbon tax job done you have another thing coming.

Carbon tax alone is a really crappy policy and will drive people to seek alternatives.

Thats exactly where those who will push taxes on to everyone wants you to be. Its not a bad place to be to be honest just take the medicine and reduce your quality of life.

Others will be asking for a more comprehensive and socially inclusive plan.

“we may see temperature increases 3-5°C by the end of the century.“ - so they are guessing.

Yes, they're guessing but their computer models have given such accurarate predictions before. NOT!

Heard one of their nutjobs being interviewed there.

Calling for the government policy to be directed by a citizens assembly.

That’s what we need, policy to be directed by a collection of whacko alarmists with no scientific or governance knowledge or experience. The result would be a catastrophe of gigantic proportions with all sorts of screwball policies enabled to drive us back a century.
