Would that include the period where they killed tens of thousands of their own civilians in the 80s?

If it was stable, because it's been in a state of emergency where fundamental human rights have been denied for decades, it's a stability that is akin to North Korea, achieved through brutal suppression of opposition.

The massacres in the early 1980s were against the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood which had been carrying out terrorist attacks for years and started a major uprising in Hama. Assad's response was to surround the city and shell the living shít out of it for nearly a month. By the time he was done the MB was completely broken as a political force in Syria. Extreme, but it worked.

The problem with places like Syria is that there is only two types of government that actually work - either hardline Islamist goverments like Iran and Saudi Arabia or secular dictatorships/military rule. They just haven't progressed far enough socially for democracy to work. We keep projecting our liberal values onto places that just don't want or understand them.

If it ends up Trump against Clinton then i think Trump has a good chance, I don't think Clinton is very like-able and that is something that Americans use to choose their presidents. Of course i think he would be a disaster but probably not worse than George W , which would still be pretty bad

I think Trump getting the republica nomination would be Clinton's best chance.

Both Sanders and Clinton would beat Trump by some margin according to polls

I think Cruz would be. The man is like a life size pile of slime i think most undecided wouldn't vote for him. Whereas Trump has appeal because of his tv persona.

It has me wondering about how another egotistical racist and bona fide charismatic nut job managed to become the head of state in the 1930's on a similar platform of hatred, intolerance, feigned persecution.

I'm sure a lot of German people were appalled at the National Socialist party coming into power.
I'm sure their disgust was justified when their civil liberties were eroded and any political opponents were eliminated systematically.

What was it Mark Twain said? History doesn't repeat itself but it sure does rhyme.

Ack. Godwined rubbish. Once again trump is less imperialistic than his competitors bar Sanders (who nevertheless did vote for military funds for Iraq although he opposed the original invasion).

The imperialist war party in the US don't like Trump.
