Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Man (69) attempts to legally reduce his age

A 69 year old Dutch man is going to court to get his age legally changed to the age he self identifies as, namely 49.

He feels discriminated against being 69 and feels his prospects of employment, opportunities and success on tinder will be greatly enhanced were he legally the age he feels like.

he likens his situation to that of transgender people.

    Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46133262

probably a stunt but legally I wonder on what grounds the court will refuse the application? Once self identification is accepted for one aspect of ones identity, why not another aspect?

On the basis of time passed between his birth and today I'd imagine.

That is Emile Ratelband who does anything for a bit of attention.
In The Netherlands we stopped taking this guy seriously before anyone had even heard about a Y2k problem.

But well... he might actually finally have accomplished international fame now.

Time is an arbitrary social construct and people experience it in different ways, why do you need to oppress this poor man? What did he ever do to you?

This is actually no more ridiculous than self identifying as the opposite sex.

He is doing it to show the stupidity of legal system moving away from simple biology. This whole "I identify as a ..." mess.

Edit, I personally know transgender people and have no issues with that.
You can be born a woman and later change sex to a man, that's not an issue for me.
It's when the genders limits gets blurred and people start saying there are more than two genders I disagree.

Time is both empirical and subjective from the observers viewpoint thus it's an arbitrary construct.

    Unfortunately not.

He is only doing it for himself and the attention.

Just a couple of links, in Dutch, to give you an idea what kind of person he is:

Just copy\paste the links in Google translate, should work.

This is actually no more ridiculous than self identifying as the opposite sex.

Age is a measure of time. Gender dysphoria is a recognised diagnosis which tends to result in clinically significant distress or impairment, likely stemming from development of the foetus.

It is more ridiculous. It is actually entirely more ridiculous.

This guy, and people like him, will stop when people like you stop buying what they're selling.

He's doing this because he knows people will say, "That's stupid, just like trans people, they're also stupid, so really he's very smart for pointing out that trans people are stupid". And he'll be invited on talk shows to say that he knows this is stupid, but if other people can change their birth certs then why can't he.

Whereas if people just said, "That's stupid. He's a moron", he wouldn't get invited on shows, and he would stop doing things like this.

This won’t be popular but I’m also sick of parents telling their kids they can be anything they want to be.

It’s jist not true, take medicine or whatever courses require 600+ points, most kids aren’t capable of that level of performance academically speaking.

It would be much better to support and encourage them to to their very best and make the best of themselves that they can be.

The problem is that even when they do their best and don’t get the 600+ points they feel like they have failed even if they have done their best.

I was among parents at a sporting event some time ago, my daughter was heading off to warm up for a race and last thing I said was” try your best and enjoy it”. Parent beside me said to their kid “if you don’t win it’s because your not trying hard enough”, truth was their kid doesn’t have the ability or skill but did enjoy competing, they’ve since left the sport as a result of constant conflict over performance.

If a poor delicate flower in Vancouver can have their ''human rights'' mercilessly trampled on because they cannot get a Brazilian for their stalky lady bits then I don't see why this codger can legally claim to be younger.

    It's outrage-farming.

Have any courts found in his favour? Is there any indication that he'd win a case?

    No.

But they print it because they know that people like you go looking for "political correctness gone mad" stories as an excuse to talk about pansexual Pleiadian otter-kin.

    They get traffic.

My sympathies lie the other way:

There are some people who are unlucky enough to be born with one set of chromosomes, and thw opposite sex organs. Or even wose, mixed up organs. This is where more than two comes in - and its very rare. These folk should get a lot of sympathy and accommodations made for them IMHO.

Whereas people who are born with matching bits and chromosomes but feel like they want to be opposite .... pfft .... go have a fight with social expectations of your sex, instead of trying to muscle in on mine.

I doubt that court will go along with it.... but, once precedent is set by those with gender identity disorder, then I think it is only fair.

He probably needs a academic / medical witness to claim that "age dysphoria" is a legitimate mental disorder.

Had a quick browse through that, regardless the leanings of the publisher that reads like pure blackmail. Sounds like these women have a legitimate reason for not providing the service but it's more of a 'pay up or I'll send the court and Twitterati after you'.
One of them, Shelah Poyer, is a single mom who works out of her home. JY was willing to withdraw his complaint in exchange for $2,500.
Once JY recognized that Shelah Poyer had legal representation and was going to put up a fight, he withdrew his complaint. No hearing took place.
