They are selling because the company is losing money every year...Too much competition and sales aren't what the used to be! The lord mayors staff got 3 weeks redundancy and that also closed because they couldnt compete and was also losing money!

All good things come to an end

Ah that's a pity. JC's treated their staff very well and I hope Dunnes will keep any on who want to stay. It's the end of an era, that's for sure :(

Literally just back half an hour from there after doing a shop. I'm absolutely shocked to hear this. A great shop, great staff and very hard to understand after them spending a small fortune in recent renovations.
    :(

JC's and the Lord Mayors both owned and run by the family and both closing their doors within a few weeks of each other.. hmmm
Me thinks a decision was made to cash out the chips. Pity as I always enjoyed shopping in JC's

I wish them well but wish they weren't closing. Careful consideration will have to be given as to main shop now. Pavilions parking such a pain in the bum. Aldi/Lidl not great for buying small quantities of fruit and veg.

As far as I know it was JC's brother who owned the Lord Mayor's. He died a few years ago too so it's more than likely his family who had been running it since and decided to sell up.

I'd imagine that selling the supermarket wasn't a decision that was made lightly, the Savage family have probably been under huge stress and have worked hard to keep it going and I wish them well. When Dunnes opened the attached store there was an agreement that they'd have first refusal should the supermarket ever be sold.

Here's some of the earlier Savages on the 1901 census - running a shop on Main St.

Does the Savage family own the shopping centre where JCs is located? My understanding was that they did.

I wonder if JCs is being sold to Dunnes or just closing and the premises will be leased to Dunnes. If they were making losses in recent years, leasing and having to do very little must have been attractive.

Pretty sure they own the building and rent the front to Dunnes.

Correct. I heard that Dunnes signed a 99 year lease when they took the front part.

I still don't understand why they did the renovation...

Has someone told Blindboy? He should totally give them a shout out.

Perhaps Dunnes paid for the renovation

That's possible. Hard to see Dunnes not renovating further when they take over. I wonder if it will close for a while during the switch?

This is true, they did pay for the renovation.

Interesting, it is a shame, it was a good place for booze bargains and the new look greatly improved it. Been following this thread waiting for the final confirmation, thanks to those in the know for that.

I shopped in JCs for many years, but to be honest it had deteriorated as a shopping destination. A bit of a kip in fact, until recent renovations. However, parking is very convenient. So much as it's the end of an era I welcome the arrival of Dunnes.

Same fella let the Lord Mayor's staff go and no sign of even statutory redundancy.

Just to point out, this is blatantly untrue, I've personally seen a cheque a member of staff received more than two weeks ago.

JCs was great for it's range of beers you could buy by the case load. Plus they sell Yorkshire tea. They will be missed.

In Swords, the pound still sells pint bottles. :D

Definitely in lounge below, haven't wandered upstairs for years. Have it in the fridge or off the shelf.

    Kettles usually have bottles too.

And in the city Lanigans (Eden Quay), the Beggar's Bush, the Palace (fleet street), Mulligans also stock them.

    Building a database :D

I started work packing bags in the original shop on main St when I was 11, sold the papers on Chapel lane on Sunday mornings too. I was one of the small crew of lads that stocked the new place when we moved up to Rathbeale Rd way back in 1977 or 78, can't remember which. I've long left Swords but still have fond memories of the people working there. A loss for the town.

The regulator has opened a so-called phase one or preliminary investigation into the proposed takeover and will accept submissions from third parties until July 25.
I wonder will blindboy make a submission. Where will he get his bags?

I think he's on record as saying they gave up a massive stockpile when they stopped manufacturing their own a few years ago.

If it's only gone to the Competition Authority now, that would suggest the change won't happen on August 1st. Could be more like the New Year.

It will take them a maximum of 30 days to make the decision, and I can't see the CCPC having any problems with the merger so it could easily be by October. Certainly can't happen in two weeks though.

Yeah - I'd say it will be quick as it's just a takeover of a single supermarket. It's when one large chain of stores takes over another large chain of stores that there is more review work to be done by the Competition Authority to ensure monopolies are not established. The fact that Swords has plenty of competitors (Tesco, Supervalu, Aldi and Lidl) means there should be no monopoly concerns here.

I don’t see them closing it down for any period of time. I would say it would be more a case of phasing in changes to the existing supermarket over time. However, I could be wrong!

Exactly how I see it too. All of the recent renovations and new shelving etc were surely done with the supervision (and probably funding) of Dunnes. That investment wasn't made by jcs with a view to immediately selling. The take over has been rumbling in the background for awhile I would say.

So an inside source has said that they are keeping it as JC's for the time being. Dunnes vouchers will be accepted within the first week or two.

I have JC’s Saving stamps as I always save them for my Christmas shopping. I wonder will they be honored by Dunnes. The stamps are still on sale today.

I can’t see them having a problem with that. Dunnes are usually pretty good at that type of thing eg. Honouring shop & save that expired during red warnings etc.

Also, since it’s more of a merger as opposed to Jc’s being bought out of administration there shouldn’t be a problem.

It's just been cleared by the CCPC. Although they haven't updated the link yet!

No surprise there it hardly represents a the formation of a massive anti-competitive supermarket chain!

I had a chat in there with a few people today and they are in the process of putting up a new JC's sign, so the information in this thread seems to be bang on, we will have a Dunne's store trading as JC's for the foreseeable future!
