I know its not a fashion thread but the state of Galvin the other night with the cap. Anyone I know that would turn up for training like that would be laughed out of the field..

if they were a 4 times all ireland winning player and footballer of the year, i doubt many would say a word to them :P

It looks like a major weakness in this concept is that it's run during club championship season. Having only 17 out of the 30 odd players down for a 3 day bootcamp really defeats the purpose of having such a camp imho. Again it's hard to see how good these lads really are based on the few clips we see but you would have to say it didn't look great last night!

Definitely a problem. They let the lad from Laois go because of his attendance. However, you can't argue with his logic - his club always come first. He should be admired for that but the format of the show means he is punished for it.

Don't think the standard is high. A local Galway paper highlighted there were 2 Galway lads trying to make it. One of them has been featured on the show so far while the other hasn't. I don't think the other lad has even played senior for his club. Then again, maybe it is a Donaghy type story where he has just been off playing other sports.....

I dont get why the Kilkenny guy doesnt have a club to train with? Surely, if he loves football that much, he would just join one of the junior clubs in Kilkenny or join a club outside the county. Not sure we are being told the full story there.

I think weak counties in football/hurling should join a neighbouring county league, it means they would have the experience of playing against better players, what is the use in winning 5 Derry hurling championships in a row playing against teams full of below average players?

Problem with Kilkenny football is that it doesn’t exist really. Club championship is wrapped up after 4 games before the hurling leagues even start. Usually it’s wrapped up by February. Kilkenny CB have no interest and only try to get it done ASAP. Probably feck all clubs anyway. Think he would be better off even training with a club in like Laois or Carlow. Fair play to the man anyway, it really seems to mean a lot to him, and he’s very humble about it.

Didn't Mount Leinster Rangers play in a Kilkenny league at one point before they won the Leinster club? Yes, it would be an idea for Kilkenny clubs to play in Carlow or Wexford competitions as a trial after running off their own championship, much like Kilmoyley won a Munster hurling league against Cork and Limerick teams.

It really is a cracking show, very enjoyable.

That centre of excellence down in Killarney is very impressive.

Loved the insights of Eamonn Ryan and Mickey Ned O Sullivan.Valerie and Paul seem to have a real gra for their old mentor.Hard to believe there were up on 20,000 in Tralee when the underdogs defeated the kingdom. It will be interesting what kind of a crowd turn up in Parnell Park.

Dubs can't win,if in the unlikely scenario they field a strong team they'll tank the underdogs. If they field an O Byrne type third team it will hardly entice a big crowd and won't be as big a thrill for these players.

I do wonder are there any Kieran Donaghy or Pearse O Neill like players who are standing out that could make it at inter county level.

Galvin made mention of Trevor Murtagh being one of their most important players to Eamonn Ryan, don't recall any real backstory to him?

Others mentioned in that conversation were a Stephen Harte from Dublin and a Nigel.

I see Niall Canning is now consigned to warming up the bench.

The Ronan O Neill and Derrytresk backstory was interesting but young Stephen from Kilkenny is heartwarming.

I can see Richie facing the chop soon,he's really not convincing in terms of demonstrating his undying commitment to the cause.

Galvin having to admonish him for having his mobile phone out in training! Two months down the road there seems to be little change in his physique.

Loving the dynamic between the three roghnoiri.

Here is Sean Brady getting sent off in the championship final that was mentioned, he is actually playing in the final again today.

Loved seeing the Eamon Ryan bits. Can see why he had such success with Cork. Even 2 mins on tv and he’d have you hanging on his every word

Richie is a bluffer! He wouldn’t last a week with me if I was picking

I’m going to the Dublin game next week. After that performance last night I’m a bit doubtful if there’s any point.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Ceist_Beag

Certainly looked a bit of a mess there at the end of that game, hard to see how a team that gets beat out the gate by clubs (even one intermediate club) can even go out on the same pitch as the Dubs.

I thought that game was this week and I'd miss it. Happy days.

I'd be very fearful for them even with a possibly O Byrne Cup like team as opposition.

Hope there's a full house in Parnell Park, they deserve it.

Why? btw did Silke really say that Kerry, Tyronr or Galway didnt take a dent of Dublin the last few years?

I'm just thinking of that Kevin Costner film Field of Dreams.

Don't know of too many participants in any sport who don't dream of playing on front of the big crowd against a giant of the game.

Possible simple oversight by Silke or maybe not.

I may be proved wrong but I don’t see why Dublin will pick their third team.

Their squad will almost be fully available, they have a new jersey out and this is a chance to sell/promote it. Fenton or Kilkenny playing in it to a big tv audience is very different to the buzz created by a Ciaran Reddin playing in it.

I know Trevor, a real good lad. He is typical of a lot of lads I'd guess, wasn't selected for any development panels when 14 or 15 and worked away diligently with his club. His story in many ways shows the problem with this development squad model, if you're not in it early, you generally won't get in later. Has been an excellent club player at Intermediate in Roscommon for several years. Has always been a worker on and off the field and there are players with less to offer on the current Roscommon panel to be honest. Is a second cousin of the Murtagh brothers who play for Roscommon.
Unfortunately for Trevor he hurt his ankle in that game shown on Thursday (about 4/5 weeks ago) and is really struggling to be fit for next week's game.

All-Ireland medals are actually not that nice, that Munster medal was better looking.

To be fair to Galvin he comes across as an excellent coach, really seems to break it down and actually explain to lads why to do something a particular way

A lot of Dublin lads still involved with club championship and league playoffs. Players that played in AI final might not be allowed to play under the inter county training ban rule?

A fair chunk of the lads have already played junior intercounty, especially when you take out the lads from counties who don't take part in the junior competition.

There were very positive reports of his coaching with St Brendans back when he was teaching. Anyone know if he is doing any GAA coaching (besides the Underdogs) at the moment?

Dublin 12s on to win and handicap of 10. Heard Gavin is ringing around all the panel but not sure how many of them want to give their Friday night away to a exhibition game.

I wouldn't think there be many as won't be back training until January. Majority of team still involved club championship and league/relegation playoffs.

Ah I was a bit surprised myself, I was also surprised he left it till today to call some of the biggest stars. Don’t think even Gavin cares about this.

Did the Dublin lad Ciaran get a starting spot?

    Ditto Richie??

Yikes if he'd anywhere near the attitude of Niall he'd be an awesome player.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Ceist_Beag

Don't think either start, bit surprised Ciaran didn't get a spot. From what I could put together of the names mentioned last night, this is the starting 15 now. Some numbers might be wrong here as they didn't mention the numbers for all players.

    1. Blake Forkan
    2. Ruairi Cunningham
    3. Graham Heavey
    4. DJ Murphy
    5. Sam McCurdy
    6. Sean Brady
    7. Adam Wilson
    8. Colm Flynn
    9. Eamon Donoghue
    10. Nigel Rabbitt
    11. Fintan Ó Cuanaigh
    12. Niall Canning
    13. Gary O'Daly
    14. Stephen Harford
    15. Cormac Doohan

    1. Blake Forkan - Mayo - played in an All-Ireland junior final for Mayo
    2. Ruairi Cunningham - Armagh
    3. Graham Heavey - Dublin - played at full-back for the Dublin minor team
    4. DJ Murphy - Kerry - won a junior All-Ireland medal with Kerry
    5. Sam McCurdy - Dublin
    6. Sean Brady - Derry - lined out for Derry in numerous national league matches
    7. Adam Wilson - Dublin
    8. Colm Flynn - Longford - played junior for Longford and was on their senior squad for several years but never made a championship appearance
    9. Eamon Donoghue - Roscommon - played Junior with Roscommon
    10. Nigel Rabbitt - Longford - played Junior with Longford
    11. Fintan Cuanaigh - Galway - played under-21 and junior for Galway
    12. Niall Canning - Sligo -
    13. Gary O'Daly - Leitrim - played minor football for Roscommon
    14. Stephen Harford - Dublin
    15. Cormac Doohan - Mayo - played junior final for Mayo

7 out of the starting 15 played junior intercounty, which when you remember Dublin (4), Derry (1), Armagh (1) don't play in the Junior championship says a bit about the junior championship.
