Ireland will finally get a chance to play some cricket this summer in an 3 match ODI series against England which starts this week.

    Thursday 30th July vs England - Southampton - 1st ODI (D/N) - 2pm - Live on Sky Sports

    Saturday 1st August vs England - Southampton - 2nd ODI (D/N) - 2pm - Live on Sky Sports

    Tuesday 4th August vs England - Southampton - 3rd ODI (D/N) - 2pm - Live on Sky Sports

Ireland squad for first ODI: Andrew Balbirnie (c), Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, Kevin O'Brien, William Porterfield, Boyd Rankin, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young

Reserves: Mark Adair, Peter Chase, George Dockrell, JJ Garth, Tyrone Kane, James McCollum, Stuart Thompson, Gary Wilson

England squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Joe Denly, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey

Reserves: Richard Gleeson, Lewis Gregory, Liam Livingstone

Ireland have 22 players staying on site and will name their squads on a match-by-match basis. Curtis Campher and Harry Tector could both make their debuts. All-rounder Campher who played for South Africa at underage level qualifies for Ireland through his mother and should be a good addition to the squad.

England include none of the test squad and have a nice mix of youth and experience which will make it very difficult for Ireland.

This will be the first series under the banner of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League which looks fairly complex. Featuring 13 teams - the top 12 and Netherlands, who qualified by winning the ICC World Cricket Super League 2015-17 - the league will see each side play four home and four away three-match ODI series in a fixed timeframe, with the top seven sides apart from hosts India earning automatic qualification for the next 50-over World Cup, to be played in October-November 2023.

Each team gets ten points for a win, five for a tie, no result or abandonment and none for a loss. The five sides failing to qualify directly will play along with five Associate sides in the World Cup Qualifier 2023, with two teams from the Qualifier making it to the ten-team World Cup.

Looking forward to it. Had tickets for Edgbaston. Bloody shame.

Did I read something about 14 man match squads with some sort of interchange possible?

Great to have Irish cricket back and looking forward to the series. The warm-up game and some of the performances from the Caribbean have demonstrated that we now have a solid one day batting lineup, especially with the likes of Tucker and Tector in the middle order. We are capable of getting at or around par scores more consistently lately.

However, we lack the firepower of the English with scores of 300+. Batsmen like Vince, Salt and Morgan can take the game away in the space of a few overs. Adair's injury is a big blow to the attack but hopefully McCarthy and Young can be a bit more penetrative.

Hoping that our batting remains consistent and we are competitve in all 3 fixtures.

Can't say I'm too hopeful. If we can post up 250+ it will be respectable. England team bat so deep, they can go hell for leather all day.

I'm interested in cricket but don't know much about the individual players. What kind of teams are they fielding? Full strength teams or are England giving their young lads a run out?

Stirling out 4th ball for 2 runs

Ireland full strength. England not playing any of the guys that played the tests v West Indies due to Covid 'bubble'. Its still a very strong ODI squad though including 8 of those from the world cup win

The England squad looks about as strong as it could be without any of the test players. The test and ODI squads are in different biosecure bubbles so there are no players in both. Even then it is really only Stokes, Root, Buttler, Archer and Wood missing.

England own the toss and bowl first, everyone takes a knee and we're off. Stirling out in the first over!

    Cheers for the explanation.

Was Stirling a hope to be a big scorer? Who else are Irelands main batsmen?

Yeah Stirling is critical. Himself and Balbirnie the best. Kev O Brien can be explosive but just as often gets out going for the big hit. Delaney and Tector are young but promising, not a hell of a lot outside these though

    Not looking brilliant then!

Balbirnie out for 3 runs. This is going to be grim

In the buildup KP talked about how batsmen know what Willey is going to do but still get out to him. Like Arjen Robben in football cutting in on his left foot and scoring loads of goals. Very impressive comeback by him, bit of extra pace it looks like too.

Good over this. Bit of a counterattack.

    Tector duck

Good review. Just where it pitched.

    Nightmare stuff.

35 is the lowest ODI innings score

Woundnt say it was made on a good batting wicket, this looks like a 300 pitch for a proper team. Think that 35 was Canada v Sri Lanka, Chaminda Vaas had a field day

Oh dear, just dropped by the beeb to see the score, truly woeful :(

Ireland making Willey look like a world beater. Fun fact my sister in law used to babysit him.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

England looked to have done their homework. Offering zero width either side of the wicket. Full reliable lengths, straight and no room for the Irish guys to manipulate the ball for too many singles. Not too many opportunities to swing the arms and the field is keeping pretty much ones as the major currency. Five down and not many on the board there is little expectation of many over 240 which unless something extraordinary, won’t be good enough.

Rashid bowling very well. Back to his best after his shoulder operation.

    50 run partnership.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Well, well. Shot was not needed KOB. Build to some kind of total even if Roy and Bairstow knock them with ease later.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,498 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

A silly run out exactly whats needed when you are 79/6

If today is a rout, do you reckon England would let Morgan play for Ireland on Saturday and Tuesday to make it a bit competitive? Lol

I'm surprised at an experienced player like Simi giving it away like that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,498 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

    McBrine out 40.

150 up. Good recovery I suppose but it looks a very good wicket as shown by the two 50 partnerships.
