Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Weirdly you're the third person to say that to me today. Covid life seems to be shutting people's brains down, or their ability to focus.

Anyone have a increase in weight gain from using the cpap machine

No I think that would be highly unusual. With cpap therapy you generally have better sleep patterns. You can lose weight from making better life choices from not being tired all the time

It was flagged with me as being common - few pounds anyway. Sweaty legs are seemingly down to how much you move in your sleep with each apnea event. The CPAP solves this. And it seemingly isn't uncommon that this can result in moderate weight gain.

You might want to bring this up next time you see your GP?

I put on a shot alright. My CPAP therapy coincided with the start of Covid so I'm putting it down to that. Diet went to ****e. Have copped on a bit since Christmas and the weight is coming off again thankfully.

COVID has confounded a lot of therapies. It will be good when it has been controlled.

    Hi Davexirl

I seem to be about 4 months behind you on the study then diagnosis (2 weeks ago) - I'm wondering did you try anything or are you still waiting? I'm desperate to get started!

    Thanks

I contacted Vincent's and asked when I might be brought in for the trial, they said they have no control over the appointments and they can't give me any date. I haven't heard anything since. I am like you, desperate to get started.

Does anyone think something like this has any credibility when it comes to sleep apnea, or is it just wild claims that it would help?

I don't know if it would help with S/A, but my daughter has been using it for about 1.5 years and it has definitely improved her sleep. I notice a difference in the air quality in her room,no doubt about it,so much so that I'm considering getting one myself.

Used to get my replacement masks from my rental company, but opted out of that option for financial reasons.
Where are people getting their supplies now? Online?

    Any recommendations?

I get one a year free from the machine rental company. After that I buy spares and replacements from http://cpapstore.eu/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭plhealy2000

I generally just get them from the rental company and reclaim under the drug payment scheme.

Covers most of the cost of the replacement parts.

Same,I get one per year from the rental company, also tubes and filters. Then I buy one from them and reclaim on the drugs payment scheme,it covers the entire cost for me.

If I purchase a new CPAP machine (or APAP as it'd likely be) - they are about 700-800eur - can I claim some tax back on this as a medical expense at the end of the year does anybody know?

I've a Fisher Paykal Icon+ at the moment, this fella here

    auto_icon-_side_cc_sh_rgb_lr.jpeg

which will be needing replacement I'm guessing sometime soon. Maybe not, but trying to get the facts straight before going to buy another!

Any recommendations on brand and why?

I'd be looking for something quiet, the FP one is quiet enough really, only noise is it hissing air if it slips off my face a bit during the night. I don't like the water tank in it though. It's difficult to clean, and routinely limescales up (i do use a descaler, but if I could actually take it apart to clean it regularly it'd be better)

Can't help you with you're first question, although I would imagine the answer is no, however on your limescale problem, I use de-ionised water from Tesco in mine. Wiped out my limescale problem overnight. Cheap as chips,it's €1.50 for 2.5 liters

cpapstore.eu is the easiest for most things and cheapest.

If you know someone in the UK, includes the north, then you can order from resmed site, they tend to be cheaper than the cpapstore.eu as you can tick the box vat exempt and not pay vat.

The last cushion I bought I save 18 euro over the cpapstore.eu price doing it that way, that included the extra money it cost me to pay for it to be sent from the UK to here. But that is a bit of a ball ache, cpapstore is cheap and reliable.

Just wondering, was that before Brexit? I wonder would you get caught for VAT/import fees on arrival into Ireland now, in particular from July when the exemption for low value shipments is ended.

No, I got my last one last week. I also got the sender to put a value of £10 on it to avoid any extra fees. I know not particularly honest. In July, I'll have to wait and see what happens I guess, it probably will shut that option down.

It's the fact that they will charge VAT on the combined value of the item and the shipping charge, plus the €10-18 admin fee depending on which post/courier service it is that could really add a sting.

I am with a consultant who is supposed to be one of the best, but I am not convinced. After my last phone consultation I have been aggravated since, I cannot get answers to questions and significant things that are causing problems are not addressed. I found them abrupt, dismissive and accusatory. Everything is my 'fault' with no suggestions as to how any issues could be dealt with. I am only getting about 5 hours sleep on average - absolute best, very occasionally might be 7 but also some 4 hours.

I have not felt well rested since I (re)started the therapy about 15 months ago, I have been told by the Resmed nurse that my conformity is very good, and I have missed almost no nights of using the mask (illness or power cuts being only exceptions). But the consultant is consistently negative about it all. There are some rather complicated connected issues that the consultant is not taking on board, just use the machine, increase the pressure, any issues are your fault. I am getting noticeably slower to understand things or think and permanently weary.

Too many sleep apnoea consultants are respiratory specialists who have picked up a bit of sleep apnoea stuff on the side and don't really know much about it. I have had two like that in the past. I think the current one knows the stuff but isn't really all that interested in individuals. If anyone is with a consultant who they are happy with and who knows the subject could you pm me names please? I think I need to move on.

I was using a Cpap machine for about 12 years - at pressure of 11 - and was told that if I lost some weight that I might not need it. At the time I ‘weighed in’ at circa 94 kg and over two years I am now down to 82 to 83 kg - depending. Result is I am off the machine completely now for over three years. I did nothing drastic to lose weight . I do a bit more physical work, walk about 3 mlles a day- this includes walking around the place doing things. , 3 meals a day - smallish portions of good quality food and no snacking

Has anyone had issues with cpapstore.eu?

Placed order 12 days ago and still don't have a delivery date.

They replied to my query 3 days ago that I would have UPS information 'tomorrow'.

Tomorrow has been and gone and there's no reply to my last email.

Is this normal for them? Or should I claim chargeback now and cut my losses?

Bit early for chargeback, the stuff comes from Greece, unless you paid d for the fast delivery. I found them to be helpful and never had an issue. Maybe whomever it was just forgot to send you the details, no harm in asking again

Sorry if this has been asked before; do Revenue accept CPAP as medical appliance for tax relief? (Purchase not rental)

I read the info on Revenue website, cpap isn't listed, though they do say it's not an exhaustive list.

Has anyone here claimed tax relief?

I haven’t claimed tax relief as I rent a machine (I’m already over the monthly limit for the Drug Payment Scheme so it’s not worth it for me to buy) but it looks like it should be covered so long as you have a prescription/letter from a medical practitioner saying that you need it:
3.4 Surgical, Dental or Nursing Appliances Relief is allowed on the costs incurred on the:
    • supply,
    • maintenance, or • repair
of any medical, surgical, dental or nursing appliance used on the advice of a practitioner.
    Appliance Confirmation
Where there is any doubt that the appliance in question is a medical, surgical, dental or nursing appliance, a certificate from a medical practitioner should be obtained which:
    a) states the nature of the patient's illness,
    b) confirms that the appliance is being used on the advice of a medical
    practitioner, and
    c) outlines how the appliance will help to prevent, diagnose, alleviate or treat
the ailment, injury, infirmity, defect or disability from which the patient is suffering.

You should get it for purchase, I get it for rental. With tax back and €200 refund from Laya along with a replacement mask in my agreement it’s effectively cost neutral.

I've found that if I clean them carefully, I get a lot more out of them (up to 6 months) with no impact on seal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,777 ✭✭✭✭looksee

What do you use to clean them? I have wiped mine with water wipes but didn't find any improvement. Also I imagine the pressure level would make a difference. I find I need a new one each month.
