Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    2.45 Southwell

Ex-Italian AZZECCAGARBUGLI hasn’t won in 15 runs since coming to England just over a year ago , starting off for Marco Botti in a 1m class 2 at Chelmsford , rated 100 .
    Has AW form figures of
4-9–3-8-4-2-2-6-3-4-2-2 since then and is now rated 25lbs lower than that initial mark . He was staying on nicely lto over 7f beaten a 1/2L by Unforgiving Minute in a decent time .
Dropped 2lbs for that with Kevin Lundie taking another 5lbs off and moves back up to 1m (won a few at this trip in Italy) .
This is his first attempt at Southwell but he’s related to fibresand winner .

    7.00 Wolverhampton -

CALIFORNIA LAD has won 3 times on the AW (all at Dundalk) , the most recent of which was in February last year off today’s mark of 63 .
Has ran 3 times at Wolves , twice for previous trainer Harry Dunlop finishing 3rd and 2nd off 78 and 76 .
Current trainer took him over in May of this year and he was a running on 3rd off a mark of 66 .
3 poor runs in Ireland since , hopefully a return to this track , 3lb drop , step up in trip plus the jockeys 3lb claim can all help towards an improved showing at a big price .

    7.45 Dundalk -

Simple fact is the favourite could just be in a different league but at the prices , I’ve had a swing at Sheila Lavery’s pair (of horses ...).
No Nay Never filly Sovereigns Bright won a nice enough maiden at Roscommon in the summer and was having her first AW start when running well here earlier this month .
(Hard to watch replays of that race as I was on the 2nd at a big price , Muzbid) .
Just behind Sovereigns Bright was stablemate Secret Wizard who didn’t get the breaks and was nearest at the finish . Has 2 course wins off higher marks and has the ability to be involved if on a going day . A big If , but a big price .

At the other end of the handicap , I’ll have a 1/2pt on Joseph’s KINGS VOW , first run since being gelded and while he might be a bit high , he has plenty of ability and proven track form

    7.45 Dundalk -
    KINGS VOW 0.5pt @ 16/1 generally

Not quite. He missed the start marginally and was 2nd last after 100 yards.
Then ran quite aggressively for about 2 f's, a bit like a US 2 year old, he was pulling a bit also. Couldn't finish.

Nothing was beating the winner , he looked a stone ahead of the rest.

Bit of a puzzle max ..you always go for long odds nags ....in the general scheme of things a large percentage of those will not win.

They are long priced for a reason...yes ?

Anyone doing this is looking for the angle - a horse with a falling rating in a handicap which is back on previous winning ground/distance for example. The booking of a certain jockey, the distance travelled for the race (why are they doing a 500 mile round trip?) and so on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 518 ✭✭✭MaxBet

My minimum price for a proper bet at the moment is 7/1 , over the years it’s reached double figures but never below 6/1 .

It’s just the way approach things when I look at a race . For example , this 1.40 on Thursday ... the 2 horses that I was interested in were Baltic Prince and Robero .

Apart from the draw being the obvious negative for both , the selection is 4 times the price of Robero so straight away I’ll focus on that one . This might sound daft but my definition of value is not beating SP , it’s more subjective .

I want the reward to be worth the risk and to be worth my time doing the study . I can just can’t get that if I’m betting at short (ish) odds .
Strike rate wouldn’t be my forte (as you can see from the thread so far !!) but I have total confidence that I’ll show a profit in the long run , betting decent priced runners at (99% of the time) level stakes .
I’m much happier getting a 20/1 winner after 15 losers than I would be after a pair of 5/2 shots . That’s just the way I’m wired up and that’s how I enjoy the challenge more .

I’m betting properly this way for almost 6 years and for the last 50 months , all my bets have been recorded .

Bordering on aftertiming or whatever here now but I’ve been profitable in 34 of those 50 months and overall , been profitable every year .

Wouldn’t expect anyone to pay any attention to or believe anything about past results but hopefully I’ll stay on here long enough to show it working out favourably again ....

So yeah , I’ve forgotten the question now after typing all that .... I suppose I just like the buzz of a big priced winner too and I’m happy to ride out the inevitable losing runs that come with big prices as long as I’m ahead in the long term

Absolutely . It’s almost about angles . A lot of which you mention , along with a few others .
But it can tick all the boxes and still not be a bet if it’s not what I believe is a value price

  • Registered Users Posts: 518 ✭✭✭MaxBet

Just to add ... this thread is the first time I’ll be monitoring solely my AW bets . The profitability in the past is based on on mostly flat racing ,inc AW racing and also the bigger NH meetings , mostly Cheltenham .
Not changing the goalposts , just saying . I still expect to show a profit by the end of it ...

I feel your pain. I had a decent few quid ew on Cheeky Rascal at 18s today. And I still feel nauseous when I think of the race SpiritofTheGames lost to Warthog a few weeks ago. To get a return is grand but it still hurts like a kick in the balls to think of what that return could have been.

With regards to your system/rule of not backing ew...Would it be worth modifying it say maybe to ew on odds of 16s or bigger? I totally get your point about low grade handicaps being all or nothing affairs generally, but you’ve hit the crossbar plenty lately with fancy odds.

    Ouch , unlucky .

It’s just not for me unless the odds are either very , very big and there’s a shortie in it I think will be hard to beat . Even then I’d be hoping for extra places or some other edge on top .
I’d rather play 2 different ones in the race at big odds than have 2 bets with one of them at a quarter or a fifth .
Plus it’s straightforward to do it on paper but ew betting really does bulk up the outlay and betting at even half decent stakes , it turns an average day into a big day quite often .

You’re spot on with what you’re suggesting though and it would’ve been a great help lately but in the long run (up to now anyway) its always worked itself out so just have to keep doing what I always do and wait for that to happen ...

And whinge a good bit along the way too obviously!

I am following blind enough. I must admit anything over 12's etc I am backing ew.

I got lucky a few weeks ago, I was fairly hammered one night and put way too much on Watchable, it won however at 25/1. I got a lovely few quid.

I mainly throw them all in accums and trebles at 10c ew as well, just in case.

Keep it going Max , it saves me the head scratch and tbh your luck will turn, it always does.

Yeah I’ll plough on anyway . Today was the first day in a long time I did decent forecasts too , was actually confident enough one of them would click .

Would you ever think of using the exchanges and laying off your stake at low odds in running?
I agree on your stance on the e/w betting, but if I was backing a horse at say 16/1, I'd probably get 25/1 on the exchanges, stick up my stake in running at say 5/1 and stick up a lay for a few points at around evens.
That way if the horse runs well, you will likely get your stake back and maybe even a few points profit if it goes close.
Its dispiriting to pick one at those sort of odds that way out runs its odds and still have the same result on the pocket as if it was tailed off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 518 ✭✭✭MaxBet

Yeah I sometimes do , either if I’m on one that’s well backed from early prices or if its a prominent runner there’s usually something to be had in-running .
I wouldn’t really go on about that here though as I just want to put up win tips and not get into advising lays ?
And to be honest , it’s just to cover part / most of the stake on certain bets and I wouldn’t always do it either
