Yep, would have to check.. but it was a few years after James Brown

Just did a quick google and they played in 2001 In Denny st...although obviously without the late Michael Hutchence! I was living and working in Dublin at the time, so missed it. I don't remember even hearing about it at the time. I just remembered I was at U2 in Slane that weekend too!

road works have started on upper Castle Street so it’s not accessible from lower castle street or Edward st.

Footpath works have also started on Edward Street and will move onto castle street. Taken from council Facebook page.

Kerry County Council wishes to advise that footpath replacement works will take place on Edward St, Tralee, from Tuesday 19th March and will continue to Upper Castle St thereafter (start date circa mid-April). Works are expected to be completed by the end of April, 2019.

The works will take place in the vicinity of the Post Office on Edward St to Moyderwell/Sullivan’s Lane junctions on Upper Castle St - on both sides of the road, from 7.30am to 6pm Mondays - Fridays.

Residential and business access and pedestrians will be facilitated at all times. Traffic disruptions will be minimal during the course of the works.

Kerry County Council is upgrading the footpaths and roads network in Tralee and your cooperation is appreciated.

My wife was asking yesterday, she saw a for sale sign up on World of Wonder in Rock Street and mentioned that he is rarely open these days - is he closing up does anyone know?

He's closing. Not doing the business. Sure how can he. There's no parking. He's never open.

I worked there in my late teens and he had the chance to move to manor before smyths. He never took it then tried to move where Mr price is now and of course it failed. Then he tried rock Street again and it failed. He missed the boat

The shop itself is closing, the office staff will relocate to the store, but the other stores he has will remain open

Jack and Jones closing was a surprise to me, thought they'd have been doing decent enuf business.

Its not permanent, they will be reopening again in another spot. I don’t know when or where, but they are due to reopen. Apparently the lease was up where they were and the landlord wanted to increase the rent so they decided not to renew the lease there.

The old Minstrels bar building is being demolished tonight. I think they will be doing more tomorrow night too. It was an eye sore the last few years. It will be good to see a new modern building when it’s rebuilt.

A bit strange though that Vera Moda, which is the same company, is still open in the unit next door. Indeed the two units are interlinked.

Yeah it’s a bit strange. But I think Vero Moda May have opened after Jack & Jones and could possibly do the same thing when lease is up. They may both move.

Is there any nightclub in Tralee anymore? Fabrik is gone and the Horan's Centre one seems to be closed also.

The road works in Boherbee are really dragging on now. It looks like they are behind schedule as they haven’t even started on lower Castle Street Down as far as AIB yet and they are meant to be finished in 2 weeks!

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,193 ✭✭✭✭Kerrydude1981

Last I heard about Fabric was that there is noting left inside the building now

And the plan was to set it up as a hub and have rental office units in there

Yeah I know the woman opening it, Maeve Frawley. She is a personal trainer & runs classes in Monavalley, She is also a sports & leisure lecturer in the ITT and owns a gym in Newcastle West called the Arena. I think that's what she will be naming this gym too.

That’s great news, I’m delighted for her. It’s great to see people with a bit of ambition. I hope she makes a success of it.

She's a lovely lady and a very hard worker. I hope it does well for her. I have been going to her classes for years and love it, so I am looking forward to joining her gym too. Its been years since I joined a gym, and I can't wait to see how it looks when its finished.

I just read on Facebook that Fitzgibbon interiors are moving into the big glass unit in Manor, which used to be a car sales showroom. They said on their page they will be open there this summer! It will be good to finally see the unit filled again.

Not looking good for Debenhams globally which have gone into administration with 50 yet to be announced stores to close. It said the most under-performing stores would shut - hopefully Tralee isn't part of that list!

They were on the list some years ago when they were going into administration... could be dodgy unfortunately.

If Debenhams went, what would go in there? They would need something to attract customers.

I’d be fairly sure Tesco have an exclusivity agreement for the centre.
Maybe they could section it off into 5/6 new units;there would be plenty of interest. The place is crying out for a fast food restaurant. KFC or Supermacs would be great.

BK is only over the road.

It’s not in the shopping center though..... like most shopping centers.
Sure McDonalds is closer than BK.

I don't think there are any exclusively agreements in place anymore.... Gloria Jean's, Costa and Starbucks
Curry's, Harvey Norman...if someone throws a ball of money there way, it want be refused

The adminstration (and fifty store closures) only apply to the core UK business. The Irish operation is a legally-separate subsidiary.

It wouldn't surprise me though if the Debenhams Ireland unit were offloaded to Sports Direct. (They're mad to get their claws into any part of the carcass!)

In that case, hopefully it would be rebranded as House of Fraser but the fear would be that some or all of the stores would get a Sports Direct makeover!

Regarding the Primary Care Centre, it seems like they have signs for Flynn Construction plastered on the windows for the last 2 years suggesting work underway but no actual visible progress!

Clounalour medical centre are moving in there, and very soon too. I was in their doctors surgery a couple of weeks ago and they had a notice up to say it would be around the end of April.

My understanding of DEBENHAMS situation is that administration and store closures apply to Debenhams UK Ltd.I dont think Debenhams IRL Ltd is affected as the stores are supposedly profitable
However i guess if the major bussiness falls it may bring down the smaller operation too

The others definitely don't although Abbey used to charge a fiver but I think that has been scrapped too.

I know it costs a few bob extra to pay for overheads for a late bar but in all fairness any place charging an admission fee would want to be offering something to justify it with.

The market for late night drinking has taken a wallop.

It's been documented that apparently Generation X and Y(ie those born before 1990) were the last generation of big drinkers. Millennials in general have less interest in consuming alcohol and are more interested in their physical health and appearance and alcohol conflicts with that. Also, the only way people met, communicated, hooked up, dated etc in the pre-smartphone era was often in the pub or nightclub/disco where drink went hand in hand. There isn't that dependency on drinking or late night venues as much any longer to interact with others when you can do it all from your phone hence the disappearance or reduction of bars and clubs everywhere - not just Tralee.

I'm actually surprised that Tralee can still sustain the number of bars it still has. How do some of them survive financially Sunday to Thursday nights (and days) when they are not even that particularly busy on Friday or Saturday nights?
