Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Okay so entrance exam is in two weeks today! Final question as I really want to get this right :) Anybody have and ideas on how formal your dress for the interview should be? Any examples for what something appropriate to wear would be? Thanks!

How much per month would you need to live as a student in Budapest?

I know this depends on how you want to live, but say student living at an average level.

    Hey guys!

So Im just finishing my first year here at Szent Istvan. All I can say is I love it! Yes the workload is intense and if you feel you're not up for having an exam every week before starting an intense 6 weeks exam period, then all I can say is back out now! Otherwise, its totally worth it.

The university campus is amazing, we have really good facilities and lecturers that if you show interest in their subject, are more than happy to help you. Youre placed in the ''international'' class, the majority of the class are being Irish.

Hmmm I cant really think of what else to say off the top of my head. If anyone would like to pm me to ask me anything please go ahead. Im happy to help :D. Last year talking to someone out here really helped me feel comfortable with the decision.

@nolimits12 how much, roughly, do you need as a budget for living there on a monthly basis. I read somewhere it is €600 but I suspect that doesn't include books clothes etc

Also, did you get accommodation when you arrived for the start of term or did you go out before the term started?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 133 ✭✭Nolimits12

300 for rent and I'm spending 300 per month for food and living. But I'm not the best person at budgeting to be honest, you could definitely live on less than that! My gyms 55 a month too..
Books you can buy photo copy versions of everything here and every year shares e books between them too. So I wouldn't factor that in as an expensive cost. Plus the only books you need are for anatomy anyway.

I had my accommodation sorted by the end of July. But I was lucky as I spoke with my roommate and she went out to Buda before hand to sort it so I didn't have to. I'd suggest taking time out to check out a few flats here.

@Nolimits12 The application requires HIV and Hep B testing negative. did you have to do this also, it seems extreme for a College application?

    Also, it says:

*International Vaccination card should be attached.

What vaccinations are needed, do you remember?

Whatttt? I dont remember the application form saying anything like that? I did have to get a doctors certificate to say I'm eligible to study here. So maybe head to your doctors and have a chat with them?

But honestly, its not a big deal to leave that out and sort it out when you're here in person. There was people in my class that didn't even include passport photos in their application (do this! as you need them for your black book)

I studied in Budapest last year on Erasmus and loved the city. The uni work wasn't stressful at all, I did engineering though and not medicine. I made a blog about my time there if you guys want some more insight, I had some friends at the Semmelweis too including a Spanish girl doing Medicine whom I asked about her experiences in the link below

Hi, I just got accepted to the school to start in September 2014 and was wondering if anyone knew the best way to try and get in touch with any others starting this year who would be willing to share a flat? I don't really want to be living by myself when I don't know the area/speak the language. I tried looking for the Facebook group mentioned earlier but I can't find it :( any ideas?

There are definetly groups try searching facebook for erasmus budapest 2014 2015 or something like that, from there you can try find Irish members, if not then try roommatesbudapest.com/ to find flatmates and a flat.

It is not a big problem to go out to Budapest without accommodation sorted. Book a cheap hotel for a few days, you will have a place sorted in no time.
There are loads of people at registration that will also be in the same boat, there will be lots of notices up in the university and at college international. Also, if you search the internet too and have viewings of apartments arranged for when you get over there.
I would look for apartments in district 6 and 7. But try to avoid around Keleti train station, not that it's particularly dangerous or anything, its just quite noisey! So try streets like - Eotvos, Csengery, Rosza, Izabella, Vorosmarty, Sziv, Kiraly, Dob...

Is it possible to avail of the free fees initiative if you study a full time undergraduate degree abroad?

Nope, no such thing as free fees in any college outside of ireland. If your an undergrad and meet the requirements you will get a maintenance grant, about 300euro a month from SUSI!

No that website is not clear on studying abroad. I have been fighting with SUSI over this for ages. I have sent in lots of appeals, I went to a solicitor, and my local TD's etc and they all say fees will NOT be paid outside of ireland. Its an absolute disgrace. If I was a foreigner coming to ireland to study I would be eligible for every grant going. This country is pathetic, wont even look after the nationals. Ring SUSI directly for more info but that website is really not clear.

I went to my local TD and he sent a letter to the Minister of Education who also happens to be from the same county as me and all her letter said was visit susi.ie and studentfinance... No effort at all put into that letter.

Ya its a disgrace. Irish students studying abroad should take a stand. Im not racist but how is it fair that the irish government will fund foreigners to study in our country and not fund their own nationals abroad?? Especially for medicine, veterinary etc courses that are difficult to get a place in, in irish colleges.

Just a quick question for the guys whom were accepted, would really be appreciated, did you all have very strong leaving cert results, would it ever be the case that an average 400's type points would be accepted?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 Mk96

Hey guys , I am in my leaving cert year at the moment and have my heart set on vet med. The points here are crazy so i was hoping to study in Budapest. The most unfortunate thing is really that i did not take Chemistry for fifth year, instead i took biology, ag science and physchem which i knew would give me more points but now i am at a loss as i know chemistry is compulsery for vet med. I saw some of ye say that ye transferred from UCD and the likes and got to skip the entrance exam as ye already had a science backround. SO basically what i was wondering was , If i do Animal Science in UCD can I transfer after a year or two to Budapest as I would have a science backround and not have needed a chemistry leaving cert? Any other closely related information to this question would be greatly appreciated as I am very stressed abou it all. Thanks..

The application form for Szent Istvan requires a pass leaving cert. Is there any subject or grade criteria applied other than that?

I'm thinking about going to budapest to study veterinary this year, but I have no idea how to apply or what the entry requirements are? Does anyone know?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 niall95

Hello ct6626, To apply to the university its easiest to go through the local rep Tim o Leary, if you Google him you'll find his details. As for entry requirements, just have a fairly good leaving cert, and then there is an entrance exam in biology and chemistry, leaving cert subjects are usually enough to pass I think that there is also prepartory weekends in Ireland somewhere for the exam, but for anyone who doesn't do these subjects there is a pre-med course for a year to prepare for the entrance exam (which I'm in at the minute). Hope this helps

Hey guys. I filled out my cao yesterday and put animal science in UCD first. What I'd love to know is if i could transfer to Budapest after my first year if i was still interested in doing vet med? I dont do chemistry for the leaving cert instead i do Physchem so i cant apply straight away. I know i need a science backround. Also is the course very hard going? Do you need to be a high points achiever to keep up with the work? Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 69 ✭✭Tryst

People transfer to the course all the time and have studied a variety of different subjects. I know someone who transferred while studying zoology and another was doing biochemistry. It isn't guaranteed you will get in of course, all you can do is apply at the time and see how it goes so make sure you are studying something you want to be studying and not just using it as a back up and pinning all your hopes on getting into Szent Istvan.

The course is hard and apparently known for being more difficult than studying in Kosice, Brno or Poland. Personally I hate it here but there are many different factors contributing to that so don`t give my negative opinion too much weight. I don`t think you need to be a high points achiever to keep up with the work load but you need to be 100% positive you want to be doing this course. A lot of people drop out the first couple of years because the workload is intense. The oral examinations they have here throw people at first too but you get used to them. Being so far from home is also hard for a lot of people but despite that many students still stick it out :) Getting caught in the inactive loop happens a fair bit too. I read the EAEVE accredidation report for our Uni recently and it seems the percentage of international students that make it through to third year is 30-40% at best.

The EAEVE report is critical on the admissions process for international students and cites that 90% of Hungarian students make it into second year whereas only 50-60% of international students do. The financial survival of the Uni is dependent on international students and that is a worry. It also states that there are too many chances for resits for international students.

However, I can't see where it says that only 30-40% make it to third year. With resits and inactive periods, I would think it is higher than that.

Hi! I'm planning on applying. I am from Singapore. I read that if you have good grades in GCE A levels biology and chemistry, you can be exempted from the entrance exam. I have Cs for both so I'm hoping I will get exempted because the topics tested are basically what our A levels were about... haha. I also read that they prefer letters of recommendation preferrably written by people who have finished their study at this veterinary school. Are you one of them? I am wondering if you could help me with this? I really want to get in because I am an animal lover with a strong passion for vet science!

Hi guys. I am from Singapore and am planning on applying using my A levels. Any other students here who got in with A levels? What grades did you have? Is it hard to get in here?
