The 87 Escort is on the original style post 86 plates - ie pre the EU style ones we have had from 1991 to present - which is nice I think.

my dad had one the same in the 80s which i used to love playing in when i was a kid.full of tools for plumbing and cigatette lighters lol just as well there was no health & saftey to stop me in the good old days:D

Was an unmodified one - or a cossie replica.

Have only ever seen a non Cossie 3 door Sierra once - it was a silver dutch registered 1.6 GL

Looked weird at the time because I was used to seeing Cossies in Mags, in rallies (on telly sadly) etc.

85 or 85 Corolla, had a Roscommon DI reg. Also an 88 Carina hatchback. Saw both of them at a match today, both are dailt drivers by the looks of things. Carina looked rough but they're tough old dogs.

Saw a W124 today in Tallaght, 86-LH-X , just one digit.

Also saw 02-RN-1 (W210) and 04-MO-1 (Megane convertible), one in Co. Roscommon, one in Tallaght ! Not classics, but interesting numbers all the same.

??? OIF. White Fore Transit , ca. 1979-1980 going by the reg, looked restored.

Depends on the car tbh - as I mentioned in this tread already - I think the modern EU style (post 1991 style plates) actually suit the W123 Mercs.

However I saw a Triumph Dolomite with the EU style plate - and it didn't suit as much at all imo.

Not strictly today but I was behind this old volvo estate last year. I have seen it around limerick city a few times. I checked the reg on cartell and their is no such vehicle so it must not be on the road no more:( Bit hard to make out in this photo but the reg is 71 D 948

1996? Why? Would it be considered a classic? In fact, why would anyone consider anything say 85 onwards as a classic?

My thoughts exactly - an as for this 1985 cut off date - your excluding cars like the Sierra and Escort Cosworths, Subaru impreza, Porsche 968.

So I don't agree with that either

Saw an 83 Merc 280 in Kinsale today KSI didn't get the last 3 digits. The I was missing from the plate, but I could make out where it had been

I think my point is that it should go by the CAR not the year.

If you pick 1980 as a cut off - you exclude the Peugeot 205 GTi and Toyota MR2 for example.

Pick 1985 - and your saying a Nissan/Datsun Stanza is a classic but a Sierra Cosworth isn't

And the idea of whether a car is a classic or not - is one too subjective to be just dictated by the year of the car - imo.

Its fine imo for insurers to set 15/20 years as the point where classic insurance to come into play - as for that - you do have to draw a line somewhere.

But for general discussion - I think flexibility is useful.

Even allowing for their comeback with some of the younger lads - its amazing how well a lot of those starlets held up - even the model that replaced the one in the pics in NDs last two posts.

Toyota GENUINELY had a claim to been the best built cars in the world back then.

Unfortunatly Merc was still in its top quality era back then - and Volvo was still turning out stuff that would do 300k* miles without breaking sweat if all you did was maintain it well and drive it sensibly.

But certainly Toyotas of that Era - Carina II was in range at that time too - were far more worthy of a "best built cars in the world" tagline then the modern Auris and co

*but so would a well maintained Carina II - especially a diesel one

ah now, that's not quite right....most cars immediately prior to 1987 (and after) had plain white plates back and front and black and silver too in some case. Red rear plates died out a good bit before 86 in the main

That's what I meant

Crusader was a UK only model using the masthead of the Daily Express. Here we had the Cashel, Tara and Corrib...broadly similar spec to the Crusader. Thus , it's an Import.
