I thought it was owned by the cotton ball chap.

Have eaten there a couple of times, including today. Food was nice enough I thought - ordered the Chicken Supreme and the coating was delicious. But I 100% agree on the portion sizes, every time I've cleared the plate and left hungry (and I'm normally someone who leaves a fair bit on the plate). They definitely could add a bit more.

Another great meal in market lane yesterday evening. Food, service, value all top notch as ever. In a league of its own

  • Registered Users Posts: 136 ✭✭112143

Not a restaurant but there was a rotisserie chicken trailer parked in Dublin builder providers yesterday that also does a chicken bun or panini.

I got myself a panini and it was delicious, it only set me back €5, seriously good value.

I always thought they only sold the rotisserie chicken, never knew they had other options.

I'd really recommend giving it a go.

    ^^^

You are either in the wrong region or you will have to explain where "Dublin builder providers" is in Cork.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent meal, doesn't have to be fine dining, that serves food for both vegetarian and gluten free options. Takeaways or lunches will do too.

I'm done with having to go to Scoozis for a family dinner (kids are teens/young adult). Paid ott prices yesterday, for ok-ish food, all because they do gluten free pasta and garlic bread🙄 the birthday girls choice as she's coeliac and we are very limited as to where we can go.

    ^^^

Maybe have a look at Market Lane. Won't be any cheaper but probably a whole lot better.

I think increased dining prices had hit the lower end of the market harder than the mid/high end.

Fine dining seems better value than ever compared to what you pay for bog standard fare.

Hi folks - anyone tried this place called COO COO Indian (near Captain Americas/Fast Als)? Looks like a new one

Yeah, I heard about that. Still though, I'd risk a curry if it was any good. I'm probably more of a hazard to myself in my own "kitchen". Cork is starved of decent curries. There's a Chinese place too there by the same company.

    Has anyone tried their food?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,168 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

I'm often of the view that somewhere that has been caught out over hygiene issues is far more likely to be compliant and on their best behaviour than somewhere who may not have had an inspection in years! (unless it's a real persistently badly run hole!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 718 ✭✭✭Debub

anyone tried The Jiang Bing Crepes opposite the Roundy? Looked interesting and genuine.

Also which is the best kebab in Cork these days, haven’t had a kebab in almost 10 years now in Cork.

    thanks

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,655 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

The Jiang Bing are delicious, well worth trying.

For me, Istanbul is still the best kebab in Cork, if you avoid the night tome rush (quality goes down). Sometimes the doner meat can be a little cold though. But the quality is good compared to other places. I liked Ali Baba on Washington Street when I tried it a few years back, but have not gone there since, so don't rely on that.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,655 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

On a slightly related note, what are people's opinions of Lavish on Washington Street?

Particularly their curries, and tarka daal? Or even kebabs (but not expecting much for a €8 kebab)?. I wouldn't be interested in the pizza/burgeres etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭JackieChang

My brother was there with an Indian guy recently and he gave them two indian thumbs up. They got some curries there.

I'm addicted to those Jian Bings. I like the basic and have about one a week. Best handy snack in town for my money. Duck and pork ones are good, too but I like the plain one the best.

I have a liking for Crazy Kebab on Coghburg Street - the chicken donner - I don't care for their lamb donner. They are huge and tasty.

Went back to The 4 Liars to try again yesterday. I went twice around the time that they first opened and thought it was pretty terrible - very bland. I think it is run by different people now and is really good. They've redecorated, too and it's now a much nicer space.

The service was pretty poor to be fair, and they aren't exactly chatty but the staff were pleasant, all the same and it's good value.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,655 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

Thanks TBR. I found the staff very friendly when I visited a couple of years back, but shared your opinion of the food back then. Hoping to visit again soon to reassess. I would love to support the business, it's a badly needed food option in a city swamped by burgers and pizza. A great addition to the Shandon area too.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,655 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

Seeing that Wok'n'Roll are opening an outlet at Daunt's Square... I've never tried their food. What opinions do people have on them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,944 ✭✭✭sporina

up there with Ramen.. only ever had it at festivals - twas grand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,027 ✭✭✭opus

I was there with a group of 7 two weeks ago, positive comments all round as well. Too bad the BYOB option is gone as I live close by so could easily nip home to resupply everyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,168 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

I believe you can still bring your own booze. We didn't but I did speak to someone yesterday who did.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,655 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

4 Liars will be closed for the next few weeks for a holiday. Must visit again in September.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭JackieChang

Got an Oakfire yesterday... they've gone absolutely down hill into the gutter. Most disgusting pizza I've had in a while. They used to be good when they started and they actually tasted kind of healthy. It has turned into a greasy mess now. Will email them a photo of the pile of grease and see what they say.

I also went to Four Liars a week or so ago, thought it was yummy. My third time there. This time I got the "BBQ ribs" ... which is actually a lamb rack sliced into chops. Great value, think it was around 17 yoyos. (Have paid €30 + for that before in fancy Cork places.. with a teaspoon of mashed potato and a single asparagus balanced on top. Absolute bolocks.) The meat was cooked to perfection with that nice smoky cooked-over-the-coals flavour. Think you get about 5 or 6 "chops" with the meal. I recommend eating in, don't see how it would survive a ride on a deliveroo bike. You need it fresh off the grill. Very muck savage friendly too, my auld counthry dad would love this.

Went to Lab82 across from train station for brunch today and picked up a brownie for takeaway - couldn’t fault it - all delicious! Fast and efficient service, the place was buzzing - will be back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,680 ✭✭✭notAMember

@leahyl The pics really are handy there, thanks for adding, wish every poster did that!

Is that hollandaise on poachies in your pic? I'm a bit of fusspot about hollandaise being real (egg yolks with butter etc) and not the fake thing some places do with heating mayo and stirring mustard in or buying bottled imitation hollandaise. Doesn't look the right colour to be the real deal, but could be light in your pic. I'd forgive frozen chips, bottled OJ and pale toast, all are grand for me, fake sauce is my line. What did you think, real deal?

What is that white layer layered into the brownie in the second pic? Or was it just packed with something creamy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,322 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

I think the Hollandaise is the real deal, it tasted pretty good to me anyway! It doesn’t strike me as the place that would do “fake” Hollandaise. I didn’t even know places did what you said :-O - maybe I just like the fake one :-D

the brownie has milkybar through it so it’s white chocolate - it was sooo good

just to add about the Hollandaise, Liberty Grill Hollandaise is light in colour but that is most definitely the real deal. I got eggs Benedict in San Francisco before and the sauce was yellow and gloopy and was the most synthetic, disgusting thing I’d ever had lol

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭JackieChang

Also i went to black rock Sunday market yesterday.

The sultan stall is a complete rip off. €11 for a wrap. I got a "Tunisian chicken skewers" thinking it was going to be actual skewers with some salad and bread etc. It was just a miserable wrap, and a tiny one at that. For €11. The "mixed salad" was just a country veg mix. Carrots, peas, corn... Didn't feel like i was eating Tunisian cuisine.

Probably the biggest ripoff I've ever had at any farmers market. Stay away from Sultan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,176 ✭✭✭✭sammyjo90

I'd agree about their hollandaise, but again I just know if i like the taste rather than if i know its fresh or not. I've had most of their egg dishes and i like the libre eggs with chorizo and harrisa

And I make dedicated trips for their kinder bueno brownies. Love them.

Their pancakes covered in stuff are a bit much for me though, more of a dessert/cake than a brekkie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,168 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Maybe it's just me, but when someone posts a pic of food they've had and how delicious they thought it was, it seems extremely rude for another poster to pick apart the dish finding several faults with it.

    "I can forgive the......." Seriously?

    Ooh, Milkybar, nice!

    Cool, will check it out.

I'm not sure on Liberty grill tbh, the place next door (spitjack?) does a hollandaise too and I think I prefer it. SF is the same as anywhere else, some places do it well and some don't

Their Marina Market stall is okay, I have their kebab wrap every so often which is a pretty decent feed. Their restaurant is probably the only decent shisha place in Cork and did BYOB last time I was there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭Mr.CoolGuy

The Marina Market has gotten very very expensive now. It's really put me off. No Sin have upped the price of their smoothie bowls from €5.50 to €6.50 to €7.50 and now they're €9.50 for a regular. The large is more expensive. All of these price increases have occurred over the past 16 months or so.

They can blame inflation all they want but the fact is that many people surely can't justify spending that much money on a simple smoothie bowl. I certainly won't anymore anyway. Big pity because they were a great option in there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,168 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Cheap and mid priced food has gone up a lot over the last 2 years. What was €8 or €9 a couple of years ago is €12 or €13 now. It's everywhere, not just MM

Higher end restaurants don't seem to have increased much as far as I can see.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,657 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

The pink coffee place out the front was charging €4 for a flat white. That's daylight robbery. Cork Coffee Roasters were charging €3.30 for a flat white with oat milk and I thought it was astronomical when they pushed it up to €3.60 recently, so I was really shocked to see €4.

I was at the food truck gathering in Wilton at lunch time & got some grub from Spice Genie, very good I must say. Not surprised he won food truck of the year. €10 for a good amount of lunch also.

The person I was meeting was telling me how the Anglers Rest wasn't great for Sunday lunch as he took his parents there & the different orders arrived ~10 mins aparts with some having hot meat with cold spuds & veg. At least they admitted the mistake & didn't charge for the people who got the cold food. He did say it looks great there however!

New cafe on Popes Quay, see "new businesses" thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭airy fairy

I've heard poor reports from the Anglers lately, which is a shame with their setting. However, I've no time for places that offer free food and endless drink to local 'celebrity' influencers just so they are included in their media pages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,680 ✭✭✭notAMember

What's did you get from Spice Genie? They do indian is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,322 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

Went to Gabriel House for brunch today and it was delicious! Had eggs Benedict and was probably one of the tastiest I’ve had. We sat out the back overlooking the city - absolutely beautiful day of course! They have hens and a greenhouse out the back also. Thought it was good value at 12.50, we had cornflakes also, could have had the usual yogurt, fruit, pastries, bread as well. They had the full Irish, mini Irish, omelette, pancakes, scrambled eggs on the menu also. Looking forward to going back!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,655 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

I had never heard of Gabriel House. Looks lovely @leahyl

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,322 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

It’s a guesthouse and they’ve only recently started doing breakfast/brunch for non-residents, as far as I know! I would recommend! They serve until midday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,680 ✭✭✭notAMember

Unreal find, looks fab. The chickens!

I had an eggs benny earlier this week (not Cork), and it was on a scone instead of a muffin or bread. It was surprisingly good. The muffins can be a bit slippery on the plate when cutting them, but a scone crumbled nicely. I know that breakfast probably doesnt need the extra calories of a scone vs english muffin, but I was happy to go all in there anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,322 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

Yeah, I don’t like the traditional muffin at all - I’ve only ever had eggs benny on a muffin once and the muffin wasn’t toasted…it was not good lol. I love when they use sourdough which they did in Gabriel House. They served a little of their own relish also, probably made using their tomatoes in the greenhouse!

Ive been a fan of Eco in Douglas for years, but went there recently and was really dissappointed

ordered steak medium to well done, got one that had hardly touched the grill, my wife eats rare, but she described mine as blue

They took it back and same steak returned 15 mins later...

enquired could I have fresh sides, but was told that would take a further 10 mins, so i let it go

Poor service overall, when i said it at bill time response was 'I will let the chef know'

On a side note, Bamboo next door has also changed ownership
