Don't say Sasha is going to bomb out early again.

Zverev struggling against (by elite tennis stds) the journeyman's journeyman Jeremy Chardy.

Has just gone to a 5th set in a 4th set tie-break now.

Not convincing at all, even tho Chardy is really fighting and took a huge risk at 6-6 in the tie-break to bang in a big second serve which proved crucial to give him the set point which got him the set.

Chardy is completely gassed, lucky Sasha

yes. Zverev wildly inconsistent though - huge amount of double faults.

would imagine that he should beat the Aussie Bolt in the next round, despite the partisan crowd that he will face but Raonic seems to be back in form and will be a big big test.

I'd love to see Raonic do well here. Really looked to be making the breakthrough in 2016 but has struggled so much with injuries since.

good to see him back but he has such a boring game to watch imo.

Djokovic - Shapovalov could be an interesting match even though Djokovic will be a massive favourite and will most likely win handily enough - hopefully Shapovalov will show some progress.

Dunno, Djokovic was awful today v Tsonga, just lucky for him Tsonga was worse.

Wouldn't surprise me if Zverev lost his next match v Bolt - he looked really strong today ..
Zverev is shaping up to be another dissapointment.

    Just so easy for Nadal.

I don't see Bolt winning. He's has been around a long time and done nothing.

Could happen of course but I expect Zverev to be better than he was today. Don't see him repeating 13 double faults for one thing.

Allthough Zverev still can't do 5 sets well - thought that Lendl would sort him out with that. Surely just a concentration thing.

I dunno man, from what I've seen he looks like he's on fire right now. Swinging very freely.

    unfortunately yes.
I never never never count out the guy, even when everyone pundits included say he's not at his best (as was the case last week) BANG he just returns with ultra strength vigour and energy.

I honestly think he'll be still winning the French open in 10 years time (at least a contender and getting far in it)

He will dump the rest of the tour in a few years time.

Duckworth and Ebden though. Both poor poor standard. I fancy Nole or Roger possibly coric to get a great run.

Just watching the highlights, terrific match it was but to start a match after midnight just seems unfair if not actually insane. Thiem didn’t seem to recover from his late finish yesterday or day before, not sure why they feel need to do it.

Yes they surely should have contingency plans to move it to another court once the schedule overruns. Hardly rocket science I would have thought.

Or even just postpone it until the next day. It's not like they're doing the players any favours, and very few, if any, of the people who bought tickets for the court stayed around to watch. Of the few hundred people who were there, most, if not all, seemed to be grounds pass holders who popped in once they were allowed.

Shockingly badly organized. Just cringe making.

The plan was to put them on court 3, but there was lots of seagull poo on that court and not enough ground staff left at the venue to clean it up.

Fair play to him! Being a night owl myself watching tennis until 3am is my idea of heaven!

Both sides of the draw are pretty much going to form so far, lots of good matches brewing. Disappointed Sharapova-Wozniacki is on smack bang in the middle of the night, would like to watch it. Osaka-Hsieh could also be a very good match on Saturday.

Rafa v Di Minaur could be interesting. Di Minaur is bang on form just now and Rafa does not have a good record in Melbourne.

Well Nadal's won the title once and reached the final another three times, so I think that's a bit of a stretch :pac:

But yeah, I don't see it. De Minaur's 19, coming off a title last week and a five setter in his previous match. I can see him taking a set and making it competitive for another one, before Nadal pulls away in a comfortable four-set win.

Can’t remember the last women’s slam with so few early shocks. Should lead to some heavyweight clashes late on for sure. I have a few quid on Barty, thinking she might be on the verge of a breakthrough but will have to beat a lot of top players to win.

De Minaur broken already, this won't taken long.
    Nadal looking very good.

generally happens when a younger gun is hyped up against one of the big 3

Nadal et al are still so far ahead of the chasing pack when on form. Baffled me how many were writing him off pre-tournament, injury or not

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,152 ✭✭✭✭josip

I've only seen bits of Nadal's and Djovoic's matches but of the two, Nadal seemed to be playing better, picking his shots, fewer errors.
And I know very little about tennis.

Thinking of putting money on Nadal, looks like he's overcome that injury and is hitting form at the right time

Do it ASAP, I got him yesterday at 8.5, don't know what he'll be on now ..
    It's money in the bank.

Rafa v Berdych and Federer v Tsitsipas have the potential to be cracking matches :).

Osaka looking very frustrated out there at the moment. Could be an upset in the making.

I reckon she will come back and win.

Halep v Venus will be very interesting.

So pleased with how Naomi is turning this around. It was looking fairly bleak there for a while.

Raonic zverev will be interesting too. in fact most games looking to be good match-ups on the men's side

Sh1t starts to get real in the fourth round.

Incredibly strong last 16 on the women's side, almost all the top players are there. So impressed with how Osaka played her way through adversity last night, hopefully should serve her well when faced with another tricky opponent in Sevastova.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

From what I’ve watched of the women’s it seems to confirm that power is more and more taking over. Still plenty of breaks but less common than you’d expect - just two in a long 3 setter between Muguruza and Konta the other night. Sabalenka disappointing again but still very intriguing last 16 line up. Serena looks in proper beast mode so far, going to be interesting to see how Halep squares up, tie of the round for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,733 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Watching Osaka last night i didn't expect her to win. Hiseh won 7 games in a row and looked well on top when i had to give in to sleep. Was surprised to see Osaka won.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

Really hoping that Barty wins today!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Kvitova in the QF's for the first time in seven years, the year Azarenka won her first slam. I must say I wasn't expecting much from her this week. She's got nobody to fear in the bottom half, she could well make the final, but just as easily flop to Barty. As is usually the case, it'll be on her racquet.

Nadal annihilates Berdych. Absolutely daft to see people writing him off pre tournament
